PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: When I began this list of coloured pencil artists, my intention was to provide illustrations of the works of Redbubble Coloured Pencil artists. Recently, many have started using the copy-protection facility provided by Redbubble, so I am unable to add illustrations when this happens … just thought I’d mention, in case anyone was hurt that I’d left them out. There are some absolutely wonderful coloured pencil artists on Redbubble. I have only found a small number of them, but I’m sure there are many more out there and I would really appreciate it if anyone could name some more for me please. Some artists on my list use coloured pencils all the time, whilst others use them occasionally or as part of a mixed medium painting. One of the main reasons I joined Redbubble was because I saw the coloured pencil art of Penny Edwardes / Since then I have discovered lots more coloured pencil artists as well and here is a list of them with clickable links to their pages: Deborah Holman / / / heartco / Ine Spee / / / Liesl Yvette Wilson / / / Kathryn Pedroza / / / Michael51 / / / pinkyjain / Brian Towers / / / Gittiart / / / BarbBarcikKeith / / / Lee Wilde / / / Belinda Lindhart / Dawn Davies / Mariana Musa / J. Fehringer / Olechka / robertsloan2 / BlaqkPhoenix / R.L. Hall / Deborah Fuller / Sarah Pittman / MinoYasue / Anne McCluskey / Chelsea Kerwath / Michelle Wrighton / Jenna Forsdyke / Terry Krysak / cheetaah / Suryani Shinta / Angelique Moorman / Roberta Ponte / Steven Novak / sosij / petportraits / sowhat / Larry Butterworth / dimarie / John R. P. Nyaid / Delabarra / I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW DELABARRA’S WORK AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. Karen Townsend / Lazart / Estelle O’Brien / angelartist / Andy Mercer / 1960Fairlane / AS WITH DELABARRA’S WORK I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW ONE OF SEAN’S PICTURES, AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. i STRONGLY ADVICE EVERYONE TO GO TAKE A LOOK THOUGH! Karsten Stier / KARSTEN IS ANOTHER ARTIST WHO UPLOADS GIF IMAGES, SO I CAN’T INCLUDE A PICTURE, BUT PLEASE DO GO TO LOOK AT HIS WORK AS IT IS EXCELLENT. salhunter / synthpaintann I’m unable to show a drawing by synthpaintann because of her security settings, but do take a look at her portfolio. Lee Grissett Azaragoza / John Hayes / Countrytennis / Kate Eller Many artists still look down their noses at coloured pencils, seeing them as a stepping stone towards painting. Others are moving from paints to coloured pencils, or using them for inclusion in mixed media paintings. Many artists, such as dawndavies, do occasional coloured pencil drawings to add to their portfolios. I’m starting to get hooked myself. If anyone knows of any other coloured pencil artists, I’d love to see their work please.

I always love finding blogs of my favorite artists sharing their creative process. Whether it’s on Flickr or on a Forum. It’s just nice to know they’re not so full of themselves that they are willing to give us the inside story of how they do their work. Unfortunately I can’t share the images of my work in this post but I will do my best to tell the story of how I create my work. 1. Begin with the ending in mind. / First, I get the idea. It’s usually spurred on by a photo or maybe an artist. Even subject matter. I read something the other day from another artist, he said: “Always have an idea, a story that you want to capture before you put pencil to paper.” This is what I try to do. The sketches that end up being full finished pieces are usually the ones with an idea or story behind them, no matter how small. / So that’s exactly what I do. Visualize what I want to see in my end product. Close my eyes and think and focus on the intension of the piece. Sometimes this takes some research for reference to find out what something looks like exactly. But if you’re doing something that you know there is no reference for it, just let your mind go with the flow. 2. Thumbnails: 90% Planning 10% Execution. / I almost always do thumbnails. 9 out of 10 times I do this. Especially with an idea that is complex and will be time consuming. I will do maybe 2 or 3 thumbnails of an idea. Usually to plan out composition. I try to apply the “Golden Ratio” where ever I can. With all my stuff there is usually a character or characters featured in the artwork. So I plan out where I want them. Review it over a few days. Then decide whether it’s worth completing. If I’ve done the process correctly up to this point then I go to step 3. My tip for composition: Learn the Golden Ratio and know what colors work together. Symmetry is overrated. 3. Scanning and Correcting. / I scan in my thumbnail which is usually about a greeting card size. Blow it up in photoshop to print it out at A3 size. If there is anything that I want changed that will help me when drawing the finished version, I will change it in the drawing with my Wacom Tablet. I can also quickly check if the colors I had in mind work or not. Contrast is very important when considering the how effective your Composition will end up being. The image at A3 gets printed out as two A4’s. I stick them together and get out my custom light table to sketch out the proportions on a clean piece of A3 paper. Tip: Remove what is not necessary. A great Zen practice. 4. Detail and Drawing. / This is definitely one of the fun parts of creating my artwork. Sometimes I add more objects or take away objects. I pretty much fill in all the detail I want to be featured in the final piece that will be colored up in Photoshop. I use a 0.5 Tech Pencil for everything I pencil. My tip for penciling: Make every line count, put intension behind every single line 5. Inking. / This is time consuming, but again very fun. I sometimes don’t use any ink, like in my “Fairytale Christmas” piece. But I decide at this point whether the line work needs ink or not. If the pencil lines are not good enough then I will ink. I use fibre tip ink markers of various sizes. But I generally try to keep all my line widths/weights the same. This is part of how I see anime drawn, so this is what I emulate. It’s appealing and neat to my eyes. My best tip for inking would be: Don’t press down hard. Glide. 6. Scanning Again. / Yes. Again scanning. I have to scan in two parts as I have an A4 scanner. This is tricky to keep each side of the page inline with eachother. Once in photoshop I try my best to line up the two parts of the page and finally I’m left with an A3 image. I lift up the levels of the image to darken the inked lines and to lower the grey scale. I’m then left with cleaning up an ink smudges or finger prints that might have not been rubbed out when I finished inking. My tip for scanning big pages on an A4 scanner: Use masking tape. 7. The Coloring In. / I love coloring. I use a A5 Wacom Tablet to color my linework in photoshop. / I set my brush to a solid line with pressure sensitivity on. So my lines go from thick to thin depending on how hard I press down. Not much to say here, except that I try to keep things simple. I use two tone coloring first and if I really feel like doing more I’ll add a third tone. Thats on the shadowing side. I then concentrate on any back light or highlighting tones, if needed. It usually helps depending on the scene. Again my coloring style emulates anime coloring. What I do sometimes is if theres a character I want to stand out more than others is to use gradients over various areas. It’s subtle but effective and not overwelming. In “Spirits & Demons” I went with a simple color tone bing pink of all colors. I’ve never done an Illustration that used a lot of pink. The reason I did this was to create a feeling of emptiness, slow motion down. It was an image with lots of things going on so I wanted to contrast that with simple use of color by making the image predominantly pink tones. The image also has a white background which is ultimate contrast. Again if I added a background of lets say, Clouds. It would just make the image far too busy. But if I made those clouds lower in coloration than the subject matter that would probably been okay. My tip for coloring: Choose your colors carefully. I do one more thing in all my images. Once everything is flattened into one Layer. I saturate the colors. Then I use Color Balance to add more Red or Blue to the image. It gives it a more unified tone. It’s all about tones. Hope you enjoyed this and that it helps you in some way.

I’d like to take this opportunity to announce my plans for huge project. This will be, by far, the biggest piece I’ve ever done and I expect it to take several months. I’ll be working on it in between smaller projects. I’m posting this now because if people know about it, I’ll be more motivated to work on it. I’m quite excited about it, actually. The scene will be an underwater coral reef. I’ll do it in colored pencil on 30”x15” paper. I have done extensive research on various types of coral, fish and other sea life that live in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and have put together a scene with a many of these animals with a great variety of color. The layout is complete, and I’ve just started adding color. I will be keeping updates on my blog and will post updated images here as well. Step 1: Research, Sketch and Layout (4 hours) Step 2: Giant Sea Clam (8 hours) / Step 3: Yellow Damselfish, Longfin Bannerfish and Red Soft Coral (5.5 hours) / Step 4: Red and Blue Sea Stars, Leather Coral and Purple Soft Coral (8 hours, added 06/18/08) / Step 5: Hard Coral and Pink Soft Coral (6 hours, added 07/15/08) / Step 6: Green Sea Fan, start of Red Lionfish (2 hours, added 08/30/08) / Step 7: Orange Sea Whip, Green Hard Coral, Clown Triggerfish (2 hours, added 01/07/09) / Step 8: Red Lionfish, Brain Coral, Sea Anemones, Orange Fairy Basslets (added 05/13/09) / Step 9: Plate Coral, Staghorn Coral, Manta Rays (added 05/21/09) /

I’ve decided to retire the use of colored pencils as a medium for my work. Don’t get me wrong I love colored pencils and my colored ACEOs look great in person but after scanning and whatnot I personally think it just looks too horrible. I’m the type of person that’s thorough, and that extends to my world of color. So it just kills me when colored penciled works are scanned in and they look almost half finished and not completely colored in. So with that, I have to retire my shoebox full of colored pencils. But no worries, in its stead I will be using acrylic paints for now on. I’m feeling more and more confident with painting and I enjoy the freedom. Also I bought a book of paper specialized for acrylic paint and I can’t wait to use it. So cross your fingers and wish me luck. I’ll be making painted ACEOs for now on. :D

Hi everyone, as I mentioned before I would like to make the transition from black and white graphite to coloured pencil. / However, I’m realising that there are so many different brands and types out there that I’m gonna need a bit of help choosing my next set of serious pencils! So where better than Redbubble to ask for a bit of advise! / What I would like to know is what all of you guys find the best to use and would recommend I draw with? I did have a few karismacolor pencils a few years ago and these were really good but not so suprisingly I don’t have a spare £130-50 to get me a full set! (I think these have been discontinued anyway so you could say I’m a bit late off the mark for that one!) All I,ve worked out so far is they need to be blendable but not too soft. / Anyone have any suggestions? / Thanks everyone / =)

To the hosts of ‘Spirit of the Native American’: I am deeply touched by the feature of “Four Feathers”. This vision was very meaningful to me, as was finally seeing the face of an ancestor I recently discovered. My great-great grandmother was Cherokee, and the plight of the native Americans has always been dear to me. I appreciate so much your thoughtfulness in selecting this as a feature. Thanks so, so much for the feature of “Sanibel Shells” in your awesome group! I very much appreciate this piece in particular being recognized. It was very labor-intensive, and though it may not have a profound visual meaning, it was a study in capturing nature at its finest. Thanks again! Linda McNeill-Wilson

I log on to RedBubble every day, and am warmed and inspired on a daily basis of the Sense of Community that the website offers me. My watchlist alerts me to the new works by my favorite artists. I was very impressed and inspired today by a new work by Penny Ewardes and her portrait of her cat done in colored pencils. I bought a fairly cheap set of 42 colored pencils last month, and have been experimenting with them on different types of paper and illustration board. Then today I came across another artist, Kat P with a portrait of her dad in colored pencil, truly amazing work!! RedBubble is proving to be a rewarding and inspiring place to be on the internet world of artists.

I always had some disdain for digital art, inherited from my beliefs in school. I see it somehow as cheating. This has been unfair, however. As technology changes and expands, it would be a shame not to embrace it and use it as a tool to express a beautiful object or idea. Fine sites like Fine Art America make it much more practical to sell prints-on-demand as opposed to originals. Digital modifications on a program like Gimp (the free version of Photoshop) are not only a good way to test out art on the marketplace and make small modifications to improve the composition, but it is also a good way to try out different options before committing the actual paint to the paper. I find digitally modifying work to be increasingly attractive (only the pieces which are not for sale as originals, so as not to misrepresent what a buyer might receive). It is a fantastic way to hone my compositional skills, which I freely admit is my biggest challenge and the separation between good and great works of art. I have featured a digitally modified colored pencil drawing which I hope provides a case in point (original not for sale). The original drawing was done on normal white, 20 lb typing paper. The background was a dull, rough texture rendered with dark colored pencil, the horizon line ran all the way across the page, which made the ground that the rabbit stood on very uninteresting. Although I was pleased with the colors and texture of the rabbit herself, the drawing overall lacked any “visual pop.” So I made a few modifications through Gimp. I applied pitch black background which encircled the entire composition. I removed the horizon line, and left only a small patch of grass to support the rabbit. I don’t pretend to compare this piece with some of the fine masterpieces on Fine Art America, but thanks to these technological tools, I am finally… satisfied.

it is funny how fast time goes by…it just seemed like yesterday that she came to live with us and all the sudden she is 7…my how the years fly by…she loves school so much that everyday when she comes home she plays school, she is the smartest kid in her class (i guess i a a little biased)...i feel bad that i can’t get her a lot of things for her birthday, but she already has the most important gift of all…a family who loves her very much … and if that is one thing i can teach her and her sister (that love is so much more important then money or material items) then i shall be happy…before i know it she will be graduating from high school…so take my advice and enjoy every minute you have with your kids now because before you know it their walking out the door into their own lives….
