I was in Snow Mass near Aspen, Colorado, for Balloon Glow. At dusk the balloons were inflated. The crowd counted down and all the balloons were lit up at the same time. It was a spectacular scene with the storm clouds moving in. The clouds lit up with the glow. This was the culmination of a wonderful evening which included some of the best barbeque I’ve ever had.

This fox sneaked up on me, while I was taken pictures of something else. I had gotten a late start this morning, and didn’t think I would see any foxes that day. So, when I had my camera pointing towards a big beehive up in a tree, this fox walked up on the log. A big surprise for me when I lowered my camera, but I managed to get two good shots before he continued his morning walk. / f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO 400, focal length 300 mm. I decided to take a day off from work and hit my fox location – I figured it would be less busy on a weekday, and the foxes might be more relaxed. Pock was out early, and he was all over the place, trotting here and there in search of breakfast. He’d trot down one trail, and a few minutes later, trot down another trail from a different direction. He didn’t mind passing close by me, he just would sit still for a photo. This vixen, the alpha female, on the other hand, was more than willing to pose for me. She perched on top of a little rise, facing east, with some lovely directional morning sun lighting her up – I don’t think I could have had better light if I had her in a studio. We tried several poses, but settled on this one as our favorite. Near the end of our portrait sitting, I noticed one of the big coyotes down the trail. he noticed the fox, but I don’t think he saw me until I walked from around the tripod – once he saw me, he took off, and the fox ducked into one of the pipe openings they use as a den. This is the new mom – at least as far as I can tell. The beta (maybe now the new alpha) was feeding her on Sunday, and her tummy does look distended and a little red. Captured in rural Boulder County, Colorado….let me just say this was honest to God unbelievable to photograph. I had to handhold these shots because of my bum knee and well, the lightning was going crazy right above me. But I managed to get some dang nice shots off. This being one of them. I am really happy with this one, I debated about a square crop, but in the end I figured why the heck not, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right folks?
