One of the wonderful things about New York City is that if you are walking down a street and it starts to rain, out of nowhere will appear numerous street vendors, saying “Umbrellas four dollars”. They also sell large, doorman-sized umbrellas for eight dollars. Look for them at the subway entrances, and on most street corners. Incredibly convenient!

2009 New York State Track Championships. Nikon D70 w/ Nikon 75-300mm lens. I shot this yesterday at the Kissena Velodrome in Flushing, New York during the New York State Track Championships. This was my first time photographing cycling races on a track. Prior to this all my cycling images were done at road races. Road racing and track racing are very different events and photographing the two styles is also very different. At a road race you are often limited to one shooting position and one type of lighting while at the velodrome I was able to choose from a variety of different shooting positions-high angle,low angle, on the straightaway, in the curve. As a result of the different angles I was also able to shoot in front, side and backlighting conditions. This image demonstrates two of the things I most love about shooting bike races- bright colors and lots of motion. There’s something magical about bright colors in motion and it’s a real challenge trying to capture clarity and detail while also trying to give a sense of the motion and speed involved. If I may say so I think I really nailed it on this shot!
