I wish I could say that this photo was easy to do..but it wasn’t! / While it appears that I simply smeared my lipstick, it’s a bit more complicated than that. I started out by converting it to a B&W-blue filter-then curving it using the red channel only. I then blew it up to about 300%..and airbrushed the dark red paint on..(no less than 200 agonizing brush strokes!) / It was grueling-but fun. (And thanks to everyone who’s commented, favourited & purchased this! Recently we did a test shoot for two really funny and crazy guys who also happen to make music together, Jase and Tom after their manager aeris saw my stuff on RedBubble and decided I am shit hot at what I do. (I’m working on the modesty bit, I swear.) Anyway they really really didn’t want to do a photo shoot in a smelly, public, and damp mens’ toilet so naturally I nagged at them until they relented. Then the first thing their manager said upon viewing this image was “That one’s for RedBubble!” So here it is.

From the San Juan Islands while whale watching for Orcas. This was taken with a crappy camera so the Quality isn’t the best but it is still high enough to be enjoyable :) / Red-Orange colors are edited.. or practically fake Cokin ;P.

There was a bit of experimentation going on in this one for me. Watercolor, charcoal, colored pencil, pencil, marker, ink, and a wonderful photo of my not so handsome face were used to pull this thing together. Quite surprisingly, I don’t hate it. I know, I know…me not hating something that I’ve done is no doubt the first sign of the coming apocalypse. I’m sorry that a pathetic self portrait by a nobody you’ve never met had to bring forth armageddon, but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Or I suppose the way the earth crumbles…as the case may be.

For some reason I always find myself drawn to the moon in my greatest times of adversity…. seeking solace in the Mother Goddess maybe….. perhaps some ritual remnant of pagan ancestors….. Either way, it soothes me. I am still working on the other images in this series. I like challenging myself in new ways, with my self-portraits. And i thought it would be interesting to see if i could make it look like i was interacting with myself . . . in some way. I shot this series against a green screen. The background was taken from a photo-shoot i did at an industrial site in Seattle, Washington. The watchman was kind of enough to let me onto the grounds and gave me a tour and all access pass with my camera. I wanted to convey the extreme sadness i feel with manic depression. Over the years i have discovered that sadness is often anger, spread really thin, masquerading as melancholy. Anger is an emotion i have a very difficult time allowing myself to feel and express, i often repress it. As a child i was not allowed to express my feelings or my anger. There is a detachment that comes with sadness, a disconnect from the self, from the world . . .
