  • How fun! These are old cast iron farm equipment seats shown at a local tractor festival this past weekend. The man who owned them has over 600 of them, most dated pre-1900s. this is my daughter’s shot – I love the different colors. Yes, folks… we do have TRACTOR festivals in Texas! We also throw buffalo chips, but I won’t get into that… May 2008: This photo is my 10-year old daughter’s shot and has JUST WON COUNTRY MAGAZINE’S photography contest (scenery category)! Thanks to everyone who took time to vote for her! We’ll be asking for your vote again in the fall when she goes up against the other 4 category winners (country kids, rural people and farm animal categories). Thanks everyone!!

In recent years, from late December to late February of the next year there is always festival atmosphere in big cities. Chinese celebrate both traditional and imported festivals: Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year (February 7 for this year), and Lantern Festival (February 21 for this year). Taken in Xi-Dan (literally “west-single”, because in old days when Beijing city was much smaller it’s the west of the city and there was a single archway built there. Please refer to “Bei-hai Park in Snow 2” / in this gallery for what an archway in the past looked like.). Xi-Dan is virtually the second most important commercial center in Beijing, after Wang-Fu-Jing which is situated in the east of the city. The Chinese words above the firecrackers are “material blessing”, “bring in wealth and treasure (four words written as one)”, and “spring”. They are very popular lately.
