It is similar but larger than the “Sparkling Violetears” with the absent violet marking across the ear portion of the head. They are not noisy as the Violetears species are, which is a pleasant characteristic. They are also distinguished by a small white spot behind the eye and pink feet. / /

  • Featured in the group Live and Let Live in August 2009 / Featured in the group Hummingbirds of the world I finally got one of these Sparkling Violetears at the right moment. This really shows the irridescence of the feathers when in the sunlight and of course that unmistakable violet ear markings. Taken in the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden, Bogotá, Colombia / /

Background Information: / Tofino is a village of about 1,650 residents on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada, located at the western terminus of Highway 4. It is located at the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, and is thus a part of Clayoquot Sound. Islands in the vicinity include Meares, Vargas and Flores. Lone Cone on Meares Island is an extinct volcano. Tofino and the nearby town of Ucluelet are the closest towns to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The settlement of Tofino first acquired the name in 1909 with the opening of the Tofino Post Office, named in association with Tofino Inlet nearby. Tofino Inlet was named in 1792 by the Spanish commanders Galiano and Valdés, in honor of Admiral Vicente Tofiño, under whom Galiano had learned cartography. A popular tourist destination in the summer, Tofino’s population swells to many times its winter size. It attracts surfers, nature lovers, campers, whale watchers, fishermen, or anyone just looking to be close to nature. In the winter it is not as bustling, however, many people visit Tofino and the west coast to watch storms on the water. Close to Tofino is Long Beach, a scenic and popular year-round destination, at the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Nearby Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, with its natural hot springs, is located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Tofino and is also a popular day-trip destination for tourists although it is only reachable by boat or float plane. Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. • Placed in the Top 10 in the Spread Those Wings Challenge in group “Just Butterflies” in August 2009 / Featured in the group JPG Cast-Offs in July 2009 / Marcella Daggerwing – Marpesia marcella has a distribution from Mexico to Peru. I found this one in a group of at least 12 near a lagoon in the Chicaque Natural Park just outside of Bogotá, Colombia. Although it is found at all elevations from sea level to 2400m, and occurs in deciduous forest and degraded woodland as well as rainforest habitats, Marpesia marcella is primarily a cloudforest species, and is most abundant at elevations of about 1200-2000m. This species is usually encountered as small groups of up to about 6 males, visiting wet sand or mud to imbibe mineral-laden moisture. / / In hot weather they tend to constantly flit from spot to spot, fanning their wings, but occasionally settle for a while and feed while holding their wigs erect. In cooler or shady conditions they feed with wings outspread. (Taken from “Learnaboutbutterflies.com”) / /
