  • Brian Fantana’s Cologne of choice…. When it’s time to musk up, chose Sex Panther by Odeon. It’s illegal in nine countries…. It’s made of bits of real panther, so you know its good. It’s a formidable scent… It stings the nostrils. In a good way. “The smell of desire” / “a used diaper… filled with… Indian food” / “like a turd covered in burnt hair” / “smells like Bigfoot’s dick”

  • Main Entrance of Cologne Cathedral at night. Usually when standing at this point, you look all the way up, but the entrance is as awesome as the cathedral with its two towers. And no, there are never no people around. Long exposure does the trick here :) f9,5 with 6 seconds exposure

  • The Altar of the Poor Clares in Cologne Cathedral was opened for a high feast day. / It is an altar from the 14th century with 36 paintings and 25 sculptures, as well as the altar of the city patrons created by Stephan Lochner, the master of Cologne. The winged altarpiece from about 1350/60 was originally located in the Cologne Franciscan church of the Poor Clares and only arrived in the Cathedral after the period of secularization. The altarpiece, consisting in a shrine casket with a protruding centre, is closed by a pair of double wings so that three different splendid views are possible. The painting on the wings was already re-painted around 1400. A restoration of the altar between 1907-1909 resulted in the removal of this later painting on the outer wings.

  • Cologne Cathedral The eye-catching, monumental Cycle of Kings in the choir clerestory was made sometime around 1300. In the lower third of the windows, which are almost 18 meters high, 48 kings stand in richly decorated architectural tabernacles. The representations alternate between young and old kings. Below the figures, the consoles are decorated with coats of arms of the donors. Above the figures, the lancets are decorated with complex ornamental interlacing patterns. / From the official website of Cologne Cathedral /

  • Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), you can see the Cycle of Angels in the background. / The blue ones are Cherubs, the reddish ones are Seraphs. The cycle of angels depicted in the spandrels of the arcades in the high choir was executed by the Late Nazarene painter Edward von Steinle between 1843 and 1845 using a fresco technique on a gold background. / This hierarchically organized pictorial program showing the nine choirs of angels replaced the medieval paintings dating from the early 14th century, which showed angels with musical instruments and censers. In view of the fact that these frescos were almost completely destroyed by the nineteenth century, it was decided to replace them instead of restoring them. / The cycle begins in the West at the two eastern piers of the crossing and ends in the East in the smaller arcades of the chevet. The order of the angels in the fifteen arcades is in accordance with the Dionysian hierarchy. / Thus the nine choirs of angels are divided into three levels, each of which has three subdivisions. Moving from West to East, angels in the same level of the hierarchy appear on opposite sides of the arcades. Although the actual pattern in each spandrel differs, the unifying element in all of them is the golden background in front of which the angels seem to float. • In the sallow twilight of dusk I sit, / silent and soundless. I’m listening to the rustling leaves, / getting lost in the song of the wind whistling through the trees. I try to be very quiet, my breathing decelerates, / my heart beat winds down. Silent now – almost without a sound – I am sitting here, / swaying to and fro like a straw in the wind. I am listening deep inside of me, / calm I am! / My blood rushes through my body, / like a mountain stream after a thunderstorm. Still getting calmer, listening, / I hear the rain drops clutching to earth almost withouth a sound. I hear the crescendo of the impact when a drop hits the earth. / Hear the gargling sound when it sinks into the ground. Thievishly I follow its way through the arteries of Mother Earth, / I float and swim through the odorous soil. Deeper and deeper I am dragged. / Suddenly there is silence around … I hover in total silence! / Can hardly breath, I am deaf … But then I notice – it isn’t silent here, / I have just become part of the pulse. Steadily the pulse is beating … / silence! * / Written on 15th January 2004 – so it is a bit older. Picture taken on Melaten cemetary, Cologne! / It is so peaceful there …

  • Cologne Cathedral / Detail of the Window of the Lamentation. John the Evangelist was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of James (Saint James the Greater), another of the Twelve Apostles. Yochanan was one of Christ’s original twelve apostles; the only one to live into old age; and not martyred for his faith, his traditional tomb is thought to be located at Selçuk, a small town in the vicinity of Ephesus. / He is believed to be the author of the Gospel of John, the Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation. (Well, the author of Revelation identifies himself as “John” several times, but the author of the Gospel of John never identifies himself directly.) Originally, he and his brother were fishermen and fished with their father in the Lake of Genesareth. According to the usual and entirely probable explanation they became, however, for a time disciples of John the Baptist, and were called by Christ from the circle of John’s followers, together with Peter and Andrew, to become His disciples. The feast day of Saint John in the Roman Catholic Church, which calls him Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist, is on 27 December. / He is considered a Patron Saint by the fraternal society of Free and Accepted Masons and Christian art usually represents St John with an eagle, symbolizing the heights to which he rises in the first chapter of his Gospel. / From Wikipedia

  • Detail of the St John the Baptist window in Cologne Cathedral. Frederick I Barbarossa (1122 – 10 June 1190) was elected King of Germany at Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and crowned in Aachen on 9 March, crowned King of Italy in Pavia in 1154, and finally crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Adrian IV on 18 June 1155. He was crowned King of Burgundy at Arles on 30 June 1178. The name Barbarossa came from the northern Italian cities he attempted to rule, and means “red beard”. He went on the Third Crusade and died 10 June 1190… / His army was approaching Antioch from Armenia and Frederick had gone to the river Saleph to bathe when he drowned in it.

  • Beautiful stained glass window in the north tower of Cologne Cathedral showing the zodiac, elements etc.

  • The city of Cologne, Germany, is divided in two by the river Rhine. The Hohenzollern Bridge connects these two parts of the city. On this “connecting” bridge thousands of couples have left tokens of their eternal love for each other… Love locks!!!
