  • As time goes by / Collins street, Melbourne

  • / I snuck into this building where people were reading their newspapers and meeting other corporate people. It was an amazing building, library quiet too. Thanks Andymac, it’s the Commonwealth Bank Building in Collins Street.

  • Shopping on Collins returning home after a hard day of shopping, the lady with all the bags caught my eye – another day in the life of us.

  • In January the evening doesn’t start until well after most shoppers have left the city area. The transport to move inhabitants around was ‘Trams’, a fixed rail system in the middle of the city roads. To protect travelers there are raised guide barrier alongside the waiting area in the middle of the road for the tram passengers. This makes it a ‘Safety Zone’ for passengers. This system is still in 2009 the basis of passenger protection. You have to cross to it from the safety of the footpath, when traffic light block the movement of traffic between the footpath and the safety zone.

  • Lightly more to the East in Collins street than the previous photo. Sometime I came to Collins Street from the train, and immediately caught a tram. Other mornings I had to wait for a tram to come, and I would then walk along Collins Street to the East. We did not have any correlation between time-tables for trains and trams. This morning you can see a tram going the wrong way for me, and a couple of cars around. The traffic is so different in 2009 at any time of the day.

  • Kodachrome reversal film 8 ASA had a tremendous brightness range. This morning I was running late and a few more people were around and some light traffic

  • I got here a little earlier than most times and there were some shoppers going to catch trains or trams. The traffic on the road was a little more than usual showing how the trams are restricted to the centre of the road with only two lanes of traffic passing between them and the footpath 20091215 108 views

  • In 1958 you could still purchase milk by buying it in your own billy from a milkman who had churns on the back of his cart. In the centre of Melbourne the milkman went round not with a horse-drawn cart, but a motor truck with a flat tray so that he could put the cans on and off easily. None of the milk was refrigerated, as his was an early morning operation starting before sunrise, but still extending out to about 7.30 am when this was taken. In this part of Collins street there were cafes, and hotels, so he did a roaring trade.

  • LIttle Collins Street was not intended for heavy traffic. Its main stream is only single lane with cars parked on each side of the road. This was not at a peak hour. 20091115 1424 Views

  • Walking at this time of day was a bit busier than 12 months earlier.

  • I never set up my shots and I never ask people to pose for me – but there was a huge element of luck here. I could not have positioned this silhouetted stranger (and his interesting shadow in the late afternoon light) in a more central spot, even if I tried ….. I was shooting reflections on the marble flooring at 333 Collins Street here in Melbourne. I was standing near the lifts, looking through the vast atrium towards the main doors. I’d shot one frame when I noticed this person walking towards the exit. Immediately, I could tell that he was a visitor and not someone who was employed in this amazing workplace. How did I know that? Because he was looking around and admiring the beautiful view, pointing out aspects to a companion. As I hit the button, he stopped for a split second and craned his neck. I was just lucky with the timing and his position in perfect alignment with the main doors. His body language says it all – that atrium is a spectacular sight. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5,6, 1/15sec, ISO 800, focal length 21mm. 117-9582
