Zanskar 1984 Series. We were on our way to cross Shingo Lal. She was on her way to collect water for the family, whose stone hut is in the right background. We were resting for a few minutes and had stopped to view the valley that rose up and beyond, unseen on our left until virtually in front of it. That was the way of this trek – the mountains so steep and huge, always hiding from view other stunning landscapes. All we could do was look and marvel at these sudden vistas – our goal ahead of us always beckoned, excep for exploratory rest days, of which there were few and far between, and none until we reached our goal and began descending the other side. The girl said nothing, she seemed oblivious to what we found awesome, and her silent expression reeked of “What the hell are you people doing here?” Olympus OM1, slide. Scanned at 4,000 dpi. Untouched.

In 1971 Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act which settled land and financial claims and provided for the establishment of 13 Alaska Native Regional Corporations to administer those claims. Similar to the status of the Canadian Inuit and First Nations, which are recognized as distinct peoples, Alaska Natives are in some respects treated separately from Native Americans in the United States. Cultures / Below is a full list of the different Alaska Native cultures. Within each culture are many different tribes. Athabascan / Ahtna / Deg Hit’an / Dena’ina / Gwich’in / Hän / Holikachuk / Kolchan / Koyukon / Lower Tanana / Tanacross / Upper Tanana / Eyak / Haida / Tlingit / Tsimshian / Eskimo / Inupiat (an Inuit people) / Yupik / Siberian Yupik / Yup’ik / Cup’ik / Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) / Chugach / Koniag / Aleut (in their own language they refer to themselves as Unangan) Natives are a majority in approximately 176 villages and small cities and are a substantial part of the population in over 200 communities. Alaska’s southeastern panhandle is the traditional territory of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Indian tribes. Natives constitute 70 percent of the population of these villages (and their surrounding areas) which stretch the length of the panhandle from Yakutat in the north to Metlakatla in the south. The waves roll like a wedding march / announcing the union of land and deep blue dreams. / They bring a dowry of tangled vines and sand dollar spines, / and my heart says YES to this sailors treasure. I come from the flutter of dry seaweed, / no longer rich with Oceana’s brine, and yet / adorning the beach with seafoam flare, / like rice and petals clinging to the foot of a runaway bride. This wonderful 1935–1937 Morris Eight, vintage car was parked near Fingle Bridge, Devon, today. I couldn’t resist taking some shots of it! I love the reflection of the dropped leaves in the paint work on the door. Nikon D40 18-55mm I chose this image, which I desaturated a bit and added a texture to, to try and keep the feel in time with the car….. Did I make the right choice? / I have also added this below in full colour and B&W which do you think is the better image?
