I’ve been very slack of late with uploading things, but have been really busy working on lots of textile art pieces and patterns. I’m doing an advanced machine embroidery course tomorrow and if you’re thinking patchwork with pale florals don’t!!! There are some really amazing things you can do now with textile art – i’ve just purchased a book of fusing synthetic fabric with a soldering iron, you can press hard with one and it cuts through several layers while sealing all the edges together a little as if they were laser cut, and as it fuses as it cuts you get a wonderful crisp edge that doesn’t fray. you can bond fabrics trapping others in between and even make marks by burning, use metal stencils and templates and basically use anything out of glass or metal as a pattern or shape for cutting or burning. I hope to do some very soon – have a wood burning tool being shipped in the mail, can’t wait! i’ve always loved all those translucent shimmery fabrics so now have some great uses for them! N (who needs another arty escape like a 3rd nipple…)

I used to do a lot of collage, like for years. I haven’t done crap in quite a few years. I’d like to blame photoshop, and struggling with it on underpowered computers years ago, but its a poor craftsman who blames his one-eyed enabler—if anything it should have made it easier. Maybe some psychological deduction happened: the random “good fits” that came from disparate sources coalescing into a cohesive composition could only be synchronicity at work; as photoshop and clip art brought photographic juxtaposition more prominently into regular commercial work, the psychological aspect felt diminished. Having a box of clippings sorted into envelopes is a physical parallel to a the database table/folder metaphor on a computer, but the computer files having no “hand-feel” may have been part of the problem. Its also possible collage and me had run our course and we were done, over, time to move on. Before that I drew a lot of superhero/post-superhero comics and that went away too—how many times do I have to be dumped before I accept that its me, not them? At first I was hesitant to scan and upload old collages to redbubble, because of copyright issues, and not wanting to rehash. Keep in mind a few were printed in the usual alternative press mags in the 90s with no copyright hassles. One magazine did keep them off the cover, and only used inside. Whatever, if I can get the scanner to work I will upload a few. I bought new gear in order to do this sort of thing instead of just muse about it.

Though OTOH, I have thought a lot about writing javascript/DHTML to randomly combine scanned background images, foreground elements, and subjects—that’s total computer. I know “DHTML” isn’t a cool term anymore, but its not really ajax bc it won’t httprequest to the server and back to get stuff—I would probably make a array of pieces…. unless the backgrounds are pulled randomly from flickr or somewhere besides my own server. I want to bust out jQuery for a project; maybe this is it.

In order to give some of my Found Collage and street art photos an added layer of context, I have now included Google Street View links on all of these photos that have been uploaded to my RedBubble gallery. For some of the photos the Street View does not give a really clear picture of the surroundings at the time the photo was taken. Things change after all, and one of the things I love most about these photos is that they only really exist for a few days, after which time the surface of the wall will change and evolve into something else. In these cases, the link serves only to provide the location that the photo was taken. However in other cases, the Street view clearly shows the the surface of the wall that the photo was taken on. It is not the same as it was on the day the photo was taken, but you can certainly see what I do when I approach a wall. Some of my favourite examples are: Cleveland Street, Redfern Mary Street, Newtown Burton Street, Darlinghurst King Street, Newtown From now on, when I add a new one of these photos to RedBubble I will also include the link for the Street View.
