Here’s a simple tutorial for those wanting to turn their photographs into tee-shirts without using the background – in other words, to make your photo of a beer bottle or candle have a transparent background that will work on almost any colour of shirt. This will also help you isolate objects with transparent backgrounds to use in 3D images, or to pull into other 2D images (compilations or collages). You can download the tutorial from here (the tutorial is in pdf format): Isolating Objects with Photoshop’s Pen Tool I’m sorry but the directions are for PC users. If someone wants to send me the equivalent mac terminology I’ll be happy to add it to the tutorial. Any questions (or you just want to point out mistakes…which, like everyone else I do make, and sometimes miss), feel free to bubble me :)

  • AN ISSUE THAT COULD AFFECT US ALL

We have debated copyright and the use of photographs for creating paintings. The general concensus seems to be that if a reference photo is taken by the painter or belongs to someone who has granted permission, then we are safe from litigation. The issue currently on my mind is this: along with other collage enthusiasts on Redbubble, I have torn pictures from unremembered magazines and I use them in collage and photo-montage. Is this a violation of copyright and if so, does it mean the end of collage and photo-montage as we know it … also an end to certain Photoshop manipulations? Incidentally, I understand that when recognisable photographic images are combined to create a new picture, yet still remain recognisable, this is called Photo Montage. When the cut-out sections are combined to make a new image and are unrecognisable as in their original form, this is called Collage. I appreciate that thtere are combinations that are difficult to pin name son and these usually get referred to under the blanket title of “collage”. Here are two examples from my own portfolio to illustrate what I am struggling to say: The first is collage because the paper cutouts that form the background to my original drawing are not instantly recognisable as complete images in themselves (I defy the original photographers to identify their work here) : The second example is photo-montage, because each piece of paper remains in its original form and could be identified (although I took the images from a magazine twelve years ago, so it is less likely) : What I need to know is this: under British copyright law, if a photographer recognised any of the images in this second picture as being his own, could he sue me in court for breach of copyright? If any lawyers are reading this, please put me out of my misery. If you can stay with me long enough to view one more image, I’d like to put forward the case that in this next picture, apart from the image of the lady and the thinker, I have used cut out pieces from photos in magazines in a way that no-one, short of a forensics expert maybe, could ever identify the original photographs: In closing, may I pay homage to the wisdom of Redbubbler Catherine Walker, who creates her paintings directly from her imagination, thus removing any risk of the possibility of violating copyright. Thanks for reading this.

It has been noticed that out there in Red Bubble Land there are some talented artists working in The Fine Old Fashioned Medium of Scissors and Glue (no digital involvement). This is the inspiration for our next visual forum. That is, hunt high and low for them (or go to the shop and buy) utilize the Scissors and Glue and NO DIGITAL INVOLVEMENT (but you know we are very forgiving here). Also in this journal we want to SEE your scissors! Some of us are collectors you know! And as an added attraction we shall be serving tea….so put that in too…and if we get tea-y enough we might be able to go into the Tea and Chairs group so you could probably put some chairs in too / These scissors defied auto focus specifically in order to trick your brain into thinking you didn’t have your glasses on. / Can you believe that anyone ever designed scissors like these? / Is that a dagger I see before me? No…it’s a pair of Japanese scissors. There will be some Good Old Fashioned Collage too…but that will take a little longer than photos of scissors. But both are in order here in this room of Georgiana’s house, so get started!

  • The Seven Day Digital Art Collage Smackdown!!
    by Foxfires

So the past month has been a riot of art. Yes, I said a riot…

So the past month has been a riot of art. Yes, I said a riot of art! Although it might not look like it now, what with the lack of new posts here on dA…I have actually been in the midst of an artistic smackdown – of the best kind. I am just finishing up a seven day whirlwind of creating, which has yeilded one new piece of artwork each day! But the best part is… I wasn’t alone! In fact, a gauntlet was thrown, a challenge was made, and I jumped in, Wacom sword a swingin’!!! So what is all this mumbo-jumbo I’m rambling on about? Well, let me quote Angi, the brains behind the smackdown…and let her explain how it all came about: Quoted from the journal of Angi Sullins / “So I’m playing in my collage journal the other day, just placing things this way and that on acrylic-painted Fabriano paper, and I get in a groove. Something manifests that I like. Really like. But I’m thinking “G-yod, I wish I had some Photoshop skills. What could this piece become if I knew my way around alpha channels, masking tools and clone stamps?” Dang. So I look up from my desk to gaze at my gorgeous husband Silas, who is, (guess what?) a Photoshop guru. Now I’ve been with this guy for six years and if I haven’t learned Photoshop yet, I ain’t gonna learn it. It’s my own lazy fault, ‘cuz Silas has been a professional Photoshop teacher since 1997. But marrying a digital art guru has its perks. “Hey! Wanna challenge?” And thus it begins. Silas takes my journal, scans in my image and starts playing. An hour into it, I’m so excited by what I see on his screen my brain begins inspiration-reeling with ideas. “Wonder what Aimee would do with this same image?” Aimee is a dear friend and also a highly skilled digital artist in the Duirwaigh crew. So I jump onto my chat program: “Hey Aimee! We’ve started a collage project and want to challenge you to participate. Did you just hear that? It was the sound of the gauntlet falling to the floor. Pick it up or die of shame.” And with those words, the SEVEN DAY DIGITAL COLLAGE SMACKDOWN was born. Well, to be perfectly clear, it didn’t start as a seven day smackdown, but we all liked what we did so much we just kept going. The rules? Each duelist was given a physical mixed-media collage and had one day to shape, mold, stretch, chisel, whittle, arrange, rearrange or derange said piece. Other than the time limit, and the fact that each artist had to use my physical collage as the basis of their work, there really were no limitations. It was like that scene in the movie Grease, when Danny Zuko shows up to drag race that creepy pock-mark faced guy in the souped-up black car with the flames on it? He turns to Danny and says with a snarl: “One rule. There are no rules.” That pretty much sums it up. ‘Cept we weren’t snarling. Not really. Well, maybe a little. But we were smilin’ too.” DAY ONE: / Aimee Stewart / Here is Silas’ version: / And here is Angi’s original art collage that we worked from: /

Hello Everyone, Just a quick note to tell you I’ve had 2 features!! As always, it’s exciting and always an honor. It truly makes my day when the hosts pick my images out of all the fantastic images they have to choose from!! It always makes me happy and puts me in shock all at the same time. Also, my image, “The Nose” was not only featured but the “Paws n Claws” group used that image (with my permission) as the cover image for their groups challenge entitled, “Noses.” That has me tickled pink. I keep going to the challenge page of that group just to see my shot as the cover image!! I know, sounds silly but I can’t help it. My little Festus’ nose being used as an example is truly awesome!! I’m loving it!!! “Paws n Claws” group is still a rather new group, if you haven’t checked them out, you should. It’s a fun group to be in!! Thank you to that group’s hosts for the honor of my image being used for the challenge cover image!! Have a Great Week, / Michelle “Colored Pencils Collage” featured in “Color Me a Rainbow” group: / “The Nose” featured in “The Patchwork” group and being used as the cover image for a challenge in “Paws n Claws” group: /

I’m not uploading this piece as yet (only the Fool atm). I’ve got to create a custom border to frame all the cards, so once that’s done I’ll upload this into my gallery/portfolio. I did this differently original and it was ok, but I’m so nit-picky that I reworked it last night (when I should have been asleep!). So here’s a peak at how it’s looking so far…

Here is the place to scroll through all the images on the Sonate Calendar at big size. Hope you enjoy them! I certainly got a big buzz from making them all. All pieces have been made in the manner of traditional collage, with scissors and glue, recylced sheet music and magazines. That’s a lot of pictures!

Tomorrow, I’m hoping it will be fine. / / If it is I shall make some paper. I shall make some paper and then when it is dry I will post it to purelydecorative for her to play with, paint on, make collage with, la la la etc etc. I haven’t done any paper work since summer, but four buckets of pulp have been sitting in the courtyard since then. Maturing. Hopefully! This afternoon I took a look at them, gave them a wash and found that the colours had survived amazingly! The pulp texture seems enhanced by the maturation process…I’m expecting an interesting result! I haven’t made A3 sheets before, only smaller and larger. But I have purchased the A3 envelope and put the stamps on it. So A3 I must make! / I’m looking forward to making the paper – for someone – sending it – seeing what she will do with it. This RB is a fabulous place! The possibilities for collaboration are endless…only limited by our imaginations! Some of my paper…which I will send to purelydecorative

collages – information provided by wikipedia:

A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. Use of this technique made its dramatic appearance among oil paintings in the early 20th century as an art form of groundbreaking novelty. An artistic collage work may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
