Here’s a simple tutorial for those wanting to turn their photographs into tee-shirts without using the background – in other words, to make your photo of a beer bottle or candle have a transparent background that will work on almost any colour of shirt. This will also help you isolate objects with transparent backgrounds to use in 3D images, or to pull into other 2D images (compilations or collages). You can download the tutorial from here (the tutorial is in pdf format): Isolating Objects with Photoshop’s Pen Tool I’m sorry but the directions are for PC users. If someone wants to send me the equivalent mac terminology I’ll be happy to add it to the tutorial. Any questions (or you just want to point out mistakes…which, like everyone else I do make, and sometimes miss), feel free to bubble me :)

It has been noticed that out there in Red Bubble Land there are some talented artists working in The Fine Old Fashioned Medium of Scissors and Glue (no digital involvement). This is the inspiration for our next visual forum. That is, hunt high and low for them (or go to the shop and buy) utilize the Scissors and Glue and NO DIGITAL INVOLVEMENT (but you know we are very forgiving here). Also in this journal we want to SEE your scissors! Some of us are collectors you know! And as an added attraction we shall be serving tea….so put that in too…and if we get tea-y enough we might be able to go into the Tea and Chairs group so you could probably put some chairs in too / These scissors defied auto focus specifically in order to trick your brain into thinking you didn’t have your glasses on. / Can you believe that anyone ever designed scissors like these? / Is that a dagger I see before me? No…it’s a pair of Japanese scissors. There will be some Good Old Fashioned Collage too…but that will take a little longer than photos of scissors. But both are in order here in this room of Georgiana’s house, so get started!

Finally, They Are Here!
by Stephen MitchellAbout two weeks ago Saharabelle and I purchased fifty-four of our cards. “I wrote about it”...
About two weeks ago Saharabelle and I purchased fifty-four of our cards. I wrote about it so that my friends and family could see them in advance and choose which they wanted and then reserve them for Xmas and Birthday cards! The package took about ten days to arrive at work (Read the fine print when you order: Redbubble prefer to send to a business address. Probably to do with proof-of-arrival. Makes sense.), and I had to wait till lunch-time to open the box. Oh, the suspense! After ripping the wrapping away like a child does on Christmas morning, I oohed and aahed over RB’s amazing production-crew. Not only are the cards amazing coloured, have fantastic resolution, but each card is individually wrapped in a resealable plastic bag. That’s a godsend in itself … no need to worry about fingerprints! We’ve chosen a varied range of cards for availability to friends and family to view, including a few of the Austin Series , a few from the Purplicious range and a whole lot from each of my photo-series . A quick email to a few very close friends at work, a few hours wait until they had a spare moment or two, some more oohing and aahing over the quality of the cards … and half my cards disappeared. Right now there are three bundles all clearly marked and named to hand over later this week … I had to bring them home to take the photograph at the base of this entry! So, if you are a family or friend who hasn’t yet had a chance to choose your cards from my gallery, either come see me or email me. There’s more available now ! Can you see my ugly face amongst all these cards? See other people’s purchases in the Redbubble Buyers Booth . / For those wanting to order my Christmas cards , you’d better order them quick: I doubt they’ll get here before Xmas-2007 . They are not dated, so you can use them next year!

Save our Seals Collage Prints now available - proceeds donated to animal rights organizations

All proceeds from sales will be donated to animal rights and welfare organizations… The Voices for Animals Group has done a collage to speak out against the seal slaughter. / A big Thanx to Lorie, (username crockpot) who co-hosts the Voices for Animals group / They look wonderful! / I’m very proud to be part of something like this! / Heres my piece that is part of the collage Please dont hurt me / These are the two collages- / if you would like to purchase a card, print or poster, where all proceeds are donated to animal rights and welfare organizations, click on the image and it will take you to the Voices for Animals Page where you can… Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. / - Voices for Animals group host If you would like to get more involved, please join in here on Red Bubble in the Voices for Animals group. / The group’s focus is to get people’s attention and educate them about the reality of animals and their so-called ‘place’ in our society. / The more supporters they have, the louder our collective voice will be!!

AROUND 200BC in China – some guy had a spark of brilliance and creative genius and discovered an artistic use for colour and shape, through the medium of what we now call “COLLAGE”, a term which was later defined by art heavy weights “Pablo Picasso” and “George Braque”. This form of art meandered its way through the developed feudal societies of Asia, onward through the dark ages, observed by a few mildly attentive crafts people. Till…………… The art form was popularized – feverishly created and thrown upon an unsuspecting public, head long into the 20th century, in the prolific hands of Pablo Picasso, the Surrealist movement that was to follow and of course the “Colour King”, in the twilight of his life “Henri Matisse”, “collage” had found its place in the art world. “Matisse” – being heavily influenced and inspired by the art, vision and mythological life of the self titled “savage”- and self imposed exile – “Paul Gauguin”, followed in his masters foot steps and sought in a more conservative passion – the place of inspiration that Gauguin was once drawn to – “TAHITI!” In 1930 – twenty seven years after the death of Gauguin, at the age of 64 , Matisse’ found a landscape unlike that of Europe, colour and texture kissed by sun, drowned in the humidity of its verdant elements, he had come face to face with Polynesia and could not perceive his artistic work through the same eyes again! Days were spent staring over the edge of his boat slowly moving over coral, as the sun above flickered upon the waters surface, while sting rays, sharks and fish swam beneath, such a site remained engraved in his thought life – it ignited a creative source of perception that he would not be able to do anything but surrender too – and so his chosen form of medium in such, as a aging and less able man, was “collage” This isn’t an art history lesson, though there isn’t anything wrong in being schooled in something now and then. I simply wanted to show that every ones got their influences, sources of inspiration, no matter what field one works or finds purpose in? We are the sum total of the ages, in all that we do, say and believe – we appropriate, borrow, add to, create and revolutionise today with the building blocks of yesterday and to do so with out acknowledgement and praise of those that have trod the path before us, is a life self centered and destined for mediocrity! I think anyway??? So yeah – i do collage – I absolutely love collage – but i wouldn’t of been able to enjoy what i do unless these amigos above here did what they did and sought the expression they felt only applicable in the humble medium of “COLLAGE” Otherwise i wouldn’t be hip to it! :) Also An honourable mention in the collage elite sunset hall of fame is: Romare Bearden A legend if ever there were!!!!

I want to create a large poster of the “Life Cycle of the Praying Mantis”, my favorite bug. It will be a collage of 6 to 8 pics from juvenile to a fresh egg case. I shot most of the images last year but could not find an egg case until a few days ago. I hope to capture a shot of the babies hatching next spring to really complete the cycle. / I took a sick day today because of oral surgery yesterday but all the meds have made my head fuzzy. I hit the wrong tabs, chose the wrong pics, performed steps in the wrong sequence. I finally have ten pics ready to assemble into an informative collage. / I have limited experience making collages, I hope it comes out right. / If this works, I have the material for other Life Cycle collages.

Hi everyone, I’m brand new here! A friend just told me about RedBubble so I thought I’d give it a try. So far so good, but only time will tell what sort of response my artwork will get. I plan to use this space to keep you up to date on what i’m currently working on and things i’ve just finished. Recently i’ve been playing with textile art and have just finished a small (20×25cm) piece that’s part collage – lots of strips of fabric all fused to a backing fabric and a huge amount of freemotion stitching over the top. I’ve been able to uses lots of metallic threads including gold and variagateds (they are still metallic but change colour every couple of inches), fluro’s and holographic foil threads. The design is a landscape – water, island and sunset with a lone tree made of calico, fused and then intensively stitched. I’ve also just tried some original paintings on ebay for the first time, but we’ll see how they go. From what I’ve seen so far and from looking at others completed listings artwork doesn’t get as many views let alone bidders as other things. Wish you could sell the originals through this site! Lastly i’ve just got my website up and running. It’s basic at the moment and needs to be refined to make it open quicker, I need to resize all the bits and pieces and add in newer artwork, prices etc. If you’re interested go have a look and check back to see the updates later! The URL is: www.eiloren.com.au Hope you all enjoy reading my journal and viewing my artwork! Neroli

A New Year Reflection

2007 has turned out to be such a great year, looking back, especially in terms of opportunities for expanding my creative outlets. Finding Artellaland was totally fabulous and has had me doing some really enjoyable work with collage and digital art techniques. And discovering Artists’ Trading Cards has been immense fun, too: I really enjoy the challenge of working inside such a small space. Perhaps my one intention this year is to become more involved in the community side of things, interact more with the other artists there. And there is a tutorial I want to write and share with others there. It shall be done! And of course getting into Redbubble has made such a difference for me in terms of my view of my own work. I have also learned so much from others and been inspired to keep going with this hobby of mine. Most of all, I love the opportunity to just immerse myself in the gorgeous work that comes out of the RB community. I intend to keep on experiencing and enjoying this nexus. I’m not very good at getting into and becoming involved in the forums here, either, though. I enjoy reading them and have gained lots. What and how to give back, though. I shall ponder this! And starting pottery classes has allowed me another opportunity for “beginner’s mind”, even though I did some pottery classes when I was a teenager. I am finding it quite difficult to take in all the intricacies of this new craft. But after only six months, once a week, I can’t really expect to be a master yet. I started this class with a view to making just one item and then more and more ideas came as I continued, so I will just have to keep on going!!! I have missed the classes during the holidays and I don’t start back until February. I have tried to do some work at home, but it isn’t really the same. However, I did have a great time dealing with my resistances on the couple of occasions I did work at home. So maybe next time will be better for me. I shall schedule an extra day per week or fortnight to spend some time on projects at home this year. And I shall make a point of continuing to enjoy what I have already created. I feel really satisfied with my creations so far. Finding cheap wool on ebay has allowed me to do much more knitting than I would ordinarily be able to afford to do. I couple this with my love of movie-watching. I do so like to see how both the movie and my knitting turn out in the end! And finding free patterns on the net has also allowed me more choice of projects. What a great hobby. I’m so glad I learned how to do it all those years ago and I am soooo grateful to those who have provided those lovely freebies for my crafting pleasure. I shall attempt to design a knitting pattern myself this year and share it with others for free, in return for what I have received. Even being involved in renovating our house has been a wonderful creative act. The spaces we have designed work really well and our house is becoming more and more of a pleasure to live in each day. And if I ever have to have anything to do with builders again, I will do a lot better than I did this time!!! Landscaping the backyard is the next project there. Should be a hoot…. Well, that lot ought to keep me going. It’s going to be a busy year, I think. Must intend some holidays and downtime, too, to recharge those batteries now and then. Still, I’m enjoying the view from this end of the stretch of time ahead called 2008. Here’s to all you Redbubblers for a happy, safe and fulfilling New Year!!! Cheers….and thanks for being there and doing what you do so well.

I’ve not been around much this week and I’ve just realised that “Ikea!!” / / was featured in the group Painters In Modern Times 3 days ago and I missed it. I’m still delighted though. “The Strid” / / was featured in the group Yorkshire Grit 4 days ago and is still there. / The best thing id that they are very different works!
collages – information provided by wikipedia:
A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. Use of this technique made its dramatic appearance among oil paintings in the early 20th century as an art form of groundbreaking novelty. An artistic collage work may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.RedBubble is a great place to find art, design, photos and writing from over 50,000 talented people.
