Watercolour and pastel. Mixed media collage. / Original is ACEO trading card size. Copyright Celia Coulter 2006. This experiment was the result of failed pieces from watercolour and pastel works which I rearranged in a collage to make a complete new work of art. And am very pleased with the result.
40cm x 45cm acrylics and collage on canvas. As yet another art course project for tafe, our imaginative lecturer wanted us to take 2 masterpieces by high profile artists and imagine, metaphorically if they’re were to be married and to have a child, paint what that child would look like! We could either make them not work together purposely to make a statement or blend them into a new image. This is man ray’s woman with cello ‘f’ holes and one of Kurt Shwitters’ collages (mostly painted but also collaged). At first i didn’t like this too much but after I got stuck into it I fell in love and this has been my favorite painting of mine ever since.
Medium: Multi/mixed-media – charcoal, pastel, gesso, watercolour, acrylic, oil, collage, leaves, fabric, papers – himalayan rice paper, cartridge, Arches 300 gsm rag paper. / Triptych: H.122 x W.170 / This work is from the curated group exhibition ‘Remnants of Presence’ Exhibition. Innisfail, Far North Queensland. / One of the conceptual challenges for each artist was to approach a work with subject matter in-two-parts to show recent practice/new work development and be shown together. Visible Traces represents renewal, journey of experiences and time passage. Part A – Of recent practice (the two outer side panels) makes reference to the initial inspirations from: the natural environment, the human figure, various motifs including banana fibre made receptacles/vessels, lino prints and evolved symbology. Part B – The new work (centre) Prior artwork imagery & object ‘remnants’ were used for the initial stimuli and also represents my ‘presence’. All is fused into an abstract multi-layered composition. It is a collective tribute to the tropical shapes, forms, patterns, and textures etc that were the initial inspirations, the visible signage. Organic, gestural and spontaneous in feel (energy), with collage and mixed media processes mingled with personal symbolism. The work provides the viewer with facets and moments. Although ambiguous, there are sufficient visual markers to draw them in to discover further information and help them to intuitively and conceptually complete what they may perceive in the work and to sense the presence of the artist (spirit).
Work exhibited in the Visual Arts Association Group Exhibition ‘Four Seasons’, held Cairns Regional Gallery, Qld. / The exhibition theme was inspired by the Vivaldi’s music ‘The Four Seasons’. Mixed media – archival black ink, acrylic, collage – paper painted, mono & screen-printed, drawing, photo; screen-printed cotton fabric, carpet material; on canvas. Background: I had been working individually on art compositions relative to my passion to interpret music, rhythm, movement and energy through the use of formal visual art elements ie. line, colour, tone, shape, texture and art media. The interpretation of any music requires one’s senses to hear and feel, absorb sound and energies, to internalize and contemplate, as apposed to recording information seen/perceived through the eyes from the physical ‘outer’ world. One has to create and interpret a visionary abstract, from a pure transitional and spiritual sensual state, from one’s own internal environment, the knowledge, understanding and experience one brings to canvas for the moments of manifestation. I jumped at the chance when this exhibition theme came up. Also I am much inspired by Kandinsky and his work, a long time favourite art philosopher and mentor. ....................................... /

Mixed mediums: Acrylic, rice paper, linen thread, pigment powder on canvas. / Size: 613×917 x 42 mm; Framed size: 970×665 x 50 mm Concept: Practically stitches bind, attach, and connect materials and/or surfaces together and is a metaphor for human bonding. The stitch becomes the ‘thread’, linking and connecting to the human psyche. Using a needle and thread by hand to stitch is a slow, methodical and sometimes painful process, of pushing and pulling through materials. The process reveals the two sides (dual nature) and the in-between to this affair. / / Abstractly worked, the stitch is used metaphorically for relaying energies and relationship formations. / Spirit Matter Cosmos abstractly references and resonates concepts of duality, the conscious and unconscious, complexity and simplicity, the spirit and alchemy of ‘relationships’ (blood & gold symbolism), transitory formations (the faded) illusions to connections and perceived realities. Always within, is the ‘spirit’, the centre, a voice of wisdom that guides and directs us in and through and beyond the ‘matter’. Working with this wonderful model just inspired me and brought all those feelings up from my heart, bones and my most inner part. Memories. / All I behold now you have gone, / besides photographs and diaries. / I stare at you and you are there, / besides me once more. Turning over, / another page lets me slowly learn / to accept this new place in time / where I find myself surrounded / by loneliness and sorrow. This is not, / of course how you would want me to be. / Were you with me now you would hold me, / stroke my face and comfort me. / Loving me, happily. Together, / we have shared these memories, / so many times, turning over, / those beautiful pages of times / roaming through contours of life. I recollect, / how we walked valleys and streams, / where we played, picniced and slept. / Turning over the page you stay with me, / through the treasures we have shared. Now at night / when I’m lonely, in those early cold hours, / turning over I’ll remember and cherish / those beautiful gifts given so freely; / and thank God for the time that you lived. / / /
