A young Peruvian girl and her baby alpaca overlooking the vast Colca Canyon of Peru. The inhabitants of the region keep alive their local culture and dress which originated in per-incan times. The girls hat for instance, with the brim folded up in the back signifies that she is unmarried.
Condors at Colca Canyon, Peru!! Took this feeling a liitle dizzy as at quite a high altitude!
The Colca Canyon, Peru is the deepest canyon in the world, about twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The Inca terraces seen here are still farmed by local people. /
Hanging on a rocky outcrop in the Colca Canyon (Cañon del Colca) in Peru’s south, this cacti stands almost 2metres high. The rocky slopes of the Colca Canyon are covered with bushes and other rugged plant life that manage to survive in this dry, cold, high altitude environment, but few of them rise more than half a metre. This one is the exception. The blurred rockface in the background, is actually close to a kilometre away, on the other side of a deep gorge. In it’s deepest point, the Cañon del Colca is over 3km deep, twice that of the Grand Canyon, making it the second deepest canyon above sea level in the world (the deepest is also in Peru).
Some Little Peruvian girls who sells some traditionals items in the Canyon of Colca in Peru.
Near Arequipa in peru.
Like many girls i found this one paired with a baby alpaca with her mother selling their wares on the steep roadsides of the Colca Canyon in Peru, i enjoy the contrast between her stern distant expression and the mischief going on behind her back, which, moments later made her crack up with laughter.
The condor’s did not come out to play today….... but the view was still amazing!

Colca Canyon in Peru. A path runs along the inner lip of the canyon which is punctuated with these small reminders of people who’d visited this awesome place.
Canon del Colca in Perú, this scene depicts the numerous terraces and ancient inca irrigation system that supplies water to grow various different crops to this day.
Many people believe that Grand Canyon is the deepest canyon in the world but its not even nearly true… Colca Canyon in Peru is the second deepest canyon in the world and is twice deeper than Grand Canyon. MORE TRAVEL ART HERE More of South America…
Condor in Colca canyon, Peru. Condors are fantastic birds which are amazingly well adapted to the harsh conditions of the habitat where they live. As food is scarce, they have to be extremely energy-efficient, and thus they use ascending thermal winds each morning for leaving their nests in the canyon cliffs and gaining altitude almost effortless. Once they are high enough in the air, they will go and fly over surrounding plains, scanning for dead animals (condors are scavenging birds) I took that picture on a chilly morning in Colca canyon, with a Canon 50d coupled with a great 70-300 DO lens Zoom in and you will actually see the amazing feather details!!
Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru. It is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States 4,160 m. However, the canyon’s walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. Since they are such major features of the landscape. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with towns founded in Spanish Colonial times and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. The local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces. The Colca River starts high in the Andes at Condorama Crucero Alto and changes its name to Majes, and then to Camana before reaching the Pacific Ocean. Parts of the canyon are habitable, and Inca and pre-Inca terraces are still cultivated along the less precipitous canyon walls. The small town of Chivay is on the upper Colca River, where the canyon is not so deep but where many terraces are present in the canyon and continue for many kilometers downstream. As the canyon deepens downriver, a series of small villages is spread out over the approximately 35 miles (56 km) between Chivay and the village of Cabanaconde. The canyon reaches its greatest depth and, in contrast, about 15 miles (24 km) to the southeast rises the 20,630-ft (6,288-m) Nevado Ampato, a snow-capped extinct volcano. The valley lies in the Callalli and Huambo districts of the Caylloma Province The canyon is home to the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), a species that has seen world-wide effort to preserve it. The condors can be seen at fairly close range as they fly through the canyon walls and are an increasingly popular attraction. ‘Cruz del Condor’ is a popular tourist stop to view the condors, the pass where condors soar gracefully on the rising thermals occurring as the air warms. The condors are best seen in the early morning and late afternoon when they are hunting. At this point the canyon floor is 3,960 ft (1,200 m) below the rim of the canyon. The La Calera natural hot springs are located at Chivay, the biggest town in the Colca Canyon. The name Colca refers to small holes in the cliffs in the valley and canyon. These holes were used in Inca and pre-Inca times to store food, such as potatoes and other Andean crops. They were also used as tombs for important people. The Spanish laid out towns along the canyon and built churches there, but the towns did not thrive and have faded out of memory. In the 1980s, the Majes Hydroelectric Project built roads and opened the area to outsiders. Access today is usually through Arequipa. Canon EOS 1000N
