The SS Dicky was washed ashore onto Dicky Beach in 1893 during a cyclone. It was re-floated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day. / / The suburb and beach was named after the ship. The beach is an unspoilt stretch of sun-drenched sand, on Queensland’s magnificent Sunshine Coast. Taken with my 5D and 16-35mm lens and I was so lucky to have a nature spectacle as the fog rolled in from West creating a mystic ambience I have also written a photographers guide if you are interested in knowing more about this site
Taken in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Every other tree on this stretch of coastline was a green palm, this was only the exception and I couldn’t resist it. See my video on YouTube

Nick and I were hoping to catch up with Ken Wright for a shoot, but the weather wasn’t looking good. Ken decided to sleep in, but Nick and I drove down to the coast anyway. Sat in the car while it rained and waited, and waited….then walked down to the rocks after dawn, with umbrellas….and waited some more….eventually I weakened and asked for the keys so I could start shooting…. I’m glad I did…..got some rippers, in the end! Thank goodness for the heavy clouds, makes shooting after dawn so much easier! Canon 5D, 16-35mm at ?, f/11, 0.6”, ISO 50….lee nd grad filters, tripod, cable release, firm footing on high ground, surging tide. A re edit of a pic I already have on here which was a HDR image, trying to steer away from it unless I find it appropriate. I like this one better in a lot of ways sometimes it’s better not to see all the hidden details. Processed in Adobe Lightroom 2. Gear out in the field – Canon 400D, Velbon tripod, 10-22mm lens, shutter release, nd grad filter. Enjoy :) This image was the winner of the “Part of the Sun” (Sunset or Sunrise) Challenge in the “Mornings & Evenings—Sunbeams & Storms” Group on the 7th of April 2009. 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr
Carpe diem / – meaning Sieze the Day, Live in the Moment etc and who knows better how to do that than a child.
