For me the most magical place on earth I think is Punakaiki or The Pancake Rocks along West Coast of New Zealand. Here all five of your senses are assaulted byt the elements that make up this wonderful spot. A visual treat is accompanied by feel and taste of salt spray on the air and booming of the waves hitting the limestone cliffs at high tide is like thunder.

Going back to places I have been over and over before. Different tides reveal formations not seen before which is an incentive to visit the place over and over again…I am now looking forward to the low pressure system currently developing…interesting days ahead

Rock formations at low tide. Taken with my 5D and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens. This is a 82mm lens and I am currently using Cokin Filters (handheld).....uuuuurrgh. I am very keen to get a Lee Neutral Density Filter set. If you have this setup I would be very interested to hear from you what experiences you have made in regards to vignetting and what Lee components you have mounted on your lens. Thanks heaps

Happy New Year everyone! This shot was taken at the Sunshine Coast just before Christmas 2007….well it’s an old shot isn’t it. Taken with my Canon 5D and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens. No Filter has been used but I did some fake HDR processing (single shot) using Dynamic Photo HDR. It’s a fun program and a great alternative to Photomatix.

The SS Dicky was washed ashore onto Dicky Beach in 1893 during a cyclone. It was re-floated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day. / / The suburb and beach was named after the ship. The beach is an unspoilt stretch of sun-drenched sand, on Queensland’s magnificent Sunshine Coast. Taken with my 5D and 16-35mm lens and I was so lucky to have a nature spectacle as the fog rolled in from West creating a mystic ambience I have also written a photographers guide if you are interested in knowing more about this site

This rock in, known as Shiroyama (literally means “white mountain”), is located Arasaki Park (Yokosuka, Japan). Yokosuka is a city in Miura near Hayama, the town where I did my internship. Hayama is renowned for the beach and green hills, and this place was just a drive down. Hayama literally means “leaf mountain” in Japanese, and indeed Hayama is full of green mountains. The coast of Yokosuka, Hayama; along with other cities in Miura are popular for their beaches and offer a rich experience with nature. This berg was as big as a house! We were bobbing around in a little lifeboat so we could be close to these and get some photos. Our main ship, the Skorpios III, although happy to plough through ice flows would not venture closer than 1 kilometre to the glacier face. The glacier in the background is the Pope Pio XI, the largest glacier (I think) in South America. Southern Patagonia, Chile.

The Old Salt Barn on Ka’ono’ulu Ranch is fixin’ to fall down any day now, the owner told me. And so I made this old building my priority. Shooting HDR style, was able to capture the full glory of the UpCountry Maui sunset.

After visiting the beautiful Cambewarra Lookout in the Morton National Park south of Sydney, you can meander down the mountain towards Nowra and this is the type of panoramic scenery you will find … Smoke haze is evident here from the bushfires further into the Morton National Park at the time. 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh!
