Icon #2 Point Ormond I am doing a St Kilda/ Elwood icon series. / I wanted to get the Point Ormond beacon. But when I climbed up there last night I realised the base had recently been encased in concrete and it looks horrible. / So I wandered down to the beach and took a shot of the city from Elwood with the beacon in the top right hand corner. Beautiful dawn light at Wembury on the South Devon coast. The multi-coloured lichen covered slices of bedrock jutting out of the sea at an acute angle in the forground give clues to the geological composition of this Special Area of Conservation. Fort Amherst is located at the entrance of St. John’s Harbor opposite Signal Hill across the Narrows’. The Fort was built in the 1770’s to defend the entrance of the Narrows’. Gun placements were used at The Fort during WWII to protect the harbor from German U-boats. In 1813 a lighthouse was built at Fort Amherst and was to be the first permanent lighthouse established in Newfoundland. It operated until 1835 but was then replaced by a new structure in 1852, which was demolished in the early 1950’s to make way for the new lighthouse which is seen today. / More in this series / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

Palm Silhouettes / Sunset Christmas Day on Maui The Adventurer “Dusk on the sea; the fading twilight shifts / The night wind bears the ocean’s whisper dim wind, on your bosom many a phantom drifts - A silver star climbs up the blue world rim. / Wind, make the green leaves dance above me here And idly swing my silken hammock – so; / Now, on that glimmering molten silver mere / Send the long ripples wavering to and fro. / And let your moon-white tresses touch my face And let me know your slim-armed, cool embrace While to my dreamy soul you whisper low. Dream – aye, I’ve dreamed since last night left her tower And now again she comes on star-soled feet. Welcome, old friend; here in this rose-gemmed bower I’ve drowsed away your Sultan’s golden heat. Mersea Island, the most Easterly populated island in the UK, may not be renowned as a photogenic location, but, standing here at East Mersea, with the gently flowing seawater lapping against the tops of the wellies, with the line of posts so obligingly composed, and with the glorious colours spreading across the late afternoon sky, it was possible for a moment or two to believe that this was the most beautiful place on Earth. Canon EOS 5D and EF 16-35mm lens. Exposure of 30 seconds at f/13.

Three seagulls having a leisurely chat at Mornington late in the afternoon. This was the first time I had been to Mornington since I was kid. I always flashbacks of a pier down on the coast as a child and until now had never realised where it was. It looked so much smaller than I remembered it to be… Processed in Adobe Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop CS. Taken with my Canon 40D and 10-22mm wide angle lens.
