Early evening light colours the exposed tide lines along Hunters Creek at Cape Leveque in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
When I woke up before dawn and found myself wondering along the shore with a camera a tripod, this was precisely the image I was after. The boat reminded me of the frailties of our existence, all alone, stranded at low tide, unable to float around with any dignity with the ominous clouds closing in on it’s steel hull. Yet it stood proud and tall, living each day as it came at the mercy of nature and the elements around it.

Larvikite occurs only in the Oslo-rift. It originally crystallised at a depth of 3 to 4 km below the earth’s surface. The rock is typically pale or dark grey in colour and is composed mainly of feldspar. The characteristic blue sheen seen in reflected light, is caused by slight difference in composition and layering of the feldspar crystals. Larvikite is an exclusive building stone used all over the world. In London the ground floor of Harrods is laid with larvikite also used as a facing stone on numerous other buildings. The rock on this island was carved by the heavy glaciers during the ice age and created a magnificent landscape. You will find many of my seascape captures from this place. This is a photo very similar to one I posted last year. As you might discover I have used a different processing this time and that together with the slightly different angle and composition made me post this view again. I can not quite make up my mind which version I like most but I believe I like the composition better on this one.

The August sun sleepily lifts above the horizon off the coast of Virginia Beach, illuminating the Atlantic shoreline. This picture was taken on what the Guinness Book of World Records states is the longest pleasure beach in the world. This section of the coast is also rife with history. Cape Henry, the site of the English colonists’ first landing in 1607, is a mere few miles to the north. ISO 100 1/50 f/5.6 20mm, taken using a Sony A300 w/ kit lens. Three exposures at -2,0, and 2 were blended in Photomatix to yield an HDR. Featured in 1620!
