Described in 1908 as ‘the lungs of Melbourne’ the natural bush and public lands along the banks of the Yarra River are now the scene of a major battle over high density development. This coalition is unfortunately no longer together. The cheetah laying down was at the time of this image almost 14 years old, very fragile and passed away a few days later. This poem was found written on a recently purchased notepad, bought for my late father who was suffering from lung cancer. It was found amongst his things and was written in his typical block letter hand and signed R C Watson. My family were heartened to read this words (we had not got him down as a poet!) and they were read aloud at his funeral service on Monday 7th April 2008. He was born, worked, lived and died within a few miles of Askern, South Yorkshire and his ashes were scattered on Stomach Hill close to the site of his childhood home and his adult workplace – the Coalite plant.

Our Great Leader spake unto us and here verily is what he sang… Though shalt not be a dictator- unless you are our friends Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi and China Though shalt not wage war on civilians- unless you are our friends China, Israel, Kosovo, Croatia, any of the central American or African regimes we backed, or in the case of Indonesia it is okay so longs as you keep providing all that sweatshop labour Though shalt not crush freedom of speech and religious belief- unless you are Saudi, China, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, or whatever Central Asian Republics we are backing. Though shalt not oppress women, and stone them to death for adultery, or whip them for being alone with a man who isn’t a close relative- unless you are Saudi Arabia, and then it is just fine. Thou shalt not have child labour- unless of course you happen to be Indonesia Thou shalt not have slave labour- unless of course you happen to be China Thou shalt not be a dictatorship- unless you are Kuwait, Saudi, the Emirates, Egypt, Pakistan and China… yeah I know, but it needs telling twice! Though shalt not torture unless you happen to be us or any number of our friends. Thou shalt not detain people with no due process and no legal defense- unless you are us and our friends, then it is just fine. Thou shalt not rig elections… Hail to the Great Leader! P.S. Please note that we have removed the following countries from the list of exceptions recently: We have pulled out open backing of Afghanistan- it is no longer allowed to export as much heroin as it likes, not is it allowed to train terrorists anymore, the Taliban are now BAD people and no longer the good people we supported to overthrow the Northern Alliance. The Northern Alliance conversely are no longer bad people, but the good people we backed to overthrow the Taliban. Clear? Iraq is no longer bad. Now that we have removed out man Saddam, who was good all the time he was dropping our WMD on Iran. Iran is bad, we are currently working overtime to fabricate as much propaganda was we can against them so we have another war based on lies. The next revision of friends will include Libya. They will be included in the list of ‘Whitehouse Approved Dictatorships’, and get special permission to oppress freedom of speech and religion, and to torture. And at some stage, we will admit they had nothing to do with Lockerbie… All hail the Great Leader!
