  • The thunderstorm in this photograph was taken on the top-end wetlands late in the build up season…only weeks before this area was a dustbowl, yet weeks later it becomes a floodplain ! As the storm surged across the lush plains it dumped heavy rain and some shortlived reprieving cool winds. / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2007 bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / / / see more of my weather related photography by clicking on the preview image below. / / / /

  • Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado…..and how I love shooting up there when the winter weather begins to roll on in…the wind is bad, the air—-freezing cold, but the images that one can capture are filled with atmosphere and drama, case in point, this shot here. I about froze my butt off getting this shot of Mummy Mountain, but I wanted something that really showed all the detail here….that represented what it’s all about being a nature photographer in Colorado…... / Thoughts welcomed! / HDR blending used to bring out more dramatic light and detail / John

  • In life as well as fishing it’s all about the journey! / As the sunrise burned through the fog early Sunday morning, on Clear Lake near Hunstville, Ontario, two fishermen enthusiastically set out for their favourite fishing spot… / This shot was as a result of an early morning walk in / August 2008 in the fog: part planning, part serendipity. I particularly like the fact that compared to a lot of fog shots it displays color, to I think, an advantage and shows the promise of a beautiful sunny summer day emerging… Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens Featured in the group Ontario November 2009 / Top Ten placement in the Summer challenge for the group Ontario November 2009 / Top Ten Placement in the Nikon D40 Users, Masterpiece challenge, September 2009 / Featured in the Nikon D40 Users group, July 2009 / Top Ten in the Journey or Destination challenge for the First Things group, July 2009 / Featured in the Outsiders, March 2009 / Featured in Canada: The Great White North group September 2008 / Featured in the Nirvana group September 2008 / Avatar for Shots In The Fog group October 2008 / Featured in the ImageWriting group November 2008 / Featured in the 100% group. • Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. Let me know what ya think! Can ya hear the rustling of the leaves?? / —-John

  • The Aspen Stand This shot got some really good feedback over on FredMiranda.com so I thought that I would go ahead and share it with you all here as well. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the type of Fall Aspen shot I have wanted, but for some reason, whenever I have shot these kinds of shots in the past, they just never really have come out. Well, I think it did this time. It is almost to much of an iconic Colorado in Autumn photo, but I think one thing makes this one stand out from others. The lines. If you notice the black areas of the bark on the Aspen, that is actually where the Elk have eaten away at the bark. However, I like how it creates the line from left to right, going up higher as it goes to the right. I didn’t even notice this until I was processing the shot, and I suppose you can blame that on negative space. I suppose you can say that I am happy with the shot, I finally got the Autumn image I have always wanted. For those of you who don’t know how beautiful the Colorado Aspen’s are in Autumn, just ask Judy, she will be glad to tell ya! Let me know what ya think! / —-John

  • “Clouds on the Water, Fire Near the Sky” / Purchase a Mouse Pad of this image I happened onto this gorgeous sunrise over the White River at a time when the water was at its lowest. I was delighted to catch the calm surface for reflections, as the low rising sun was casting its first orange glow over the autumn colors.

  • Filling up a glass of water and noticed this out of the kitchen window. Literally ran outside with a t-shirt and slippers on to get this before it went. First few shots were a golden amber in color then it went to this before it disappeared. Only snapped about 30 bracketed shots before it was gone. Gonna go a repot my orchid while this is uploading (and I finished it, thanks dial-up). Hope you like it. Please critique… print available here and on my website. • The pains of personality disorder. please view large.

  • Rural northern Boulder County, Colorado Honest to God above, this was utterly amazing….I can’t really find the wards to describe the whole scene to you all but I will try my best. I had to handhold this, along with the other shots to come, my knee is totally kaput so using a tripod was pretty much out of the question, however that isn’t the only reason…as we were shooting last evening, the lightning was all over the place, and well there were times when I wanted to grab it and try, but thought better of it lol Tripods make for great Lightning conductors! lol The clouds were just insane, and I mean really crazy, this storm went severe dropping reports of funnel clouds to the north east of us and hail as well. It passed over our heads, but sure made for some utterly incredible atmospheric shots! So you take that, a Sunflower field the size of a small state, the sunset, a country road, and the foothills and mountains as a backdrop, and friends, you have quite a scene you will NEVER forget! Hope ya all like it! / —-John Minolta 5D / Minolta 18-70mm / CPL & ND4

  • EDT…it’s the edge of winter…snow, wet, dark, light, night, day…a time when S.A.D is pre-eminent…it takes time to adjust, and some wait in limbo for EDT in March, but some embrace the changes…I don’t like the dark that sets in so early, so I have daylight bulbs in all my lamps…six weeks from now it’s the solstice and we start looking forward to lighter days Thomas Hood expresses it beautifully for us Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ENTIRE WINTER COLLECTION No sun-no moon! / No morn-no noon! / No dawn-no dusk-no proper time of day- / No sky-no earthly view— / No distance looking blue .. • The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, tripod, polariser, f19, 1/20sec, iso 100, auto wb, single RAW file pseudo HDR in Photomatix, tweaked in PS CS3, and a final layer of Orton, reducing the opacity, to make the colours ‘pop’.
