  • Chinook clouds are a unique cloud formation found mainly in southern Alberta, Canada. A chinook is also known as the “snow eater” as it brings in warm air into the region during the winter. My sky shots are 100% natural and have not been altered or enhanced.

  • At Day’s End As the sun goes down over the front range mountains of Denver, Colorado, the Sunflowers turn, in anticipation of the sun coming back up in the morning. Photographed in a field where all you can see for miles and miles is Sunflowers….billions of Sunflowers. An entire sea of yellow and gold….caught in my lens for a fleeting instant, where the whole world was at peace…. • When the thunder comes and you are standing at 12,000 feet, this is probably the last place you want to be. So when the thunder comes and you are the highest object in the Colorado Rockies….run!!! Lightning strikes kill people in the high country every year and needles to say I pretty much high tailed it after shooting this, back to the car as quick as I could. Loveland Pass is a Colorado landmark, and looking here you look out over the Continental Divide. It is the highest mountain Pass in the United States to be plowed and stayed open year around, as trucks carrying hazardous chemicals must cross this way instead of using the Eisenhower Tunnel. I went ahead and decided to process this in HDR using Photomatix and final output through PS CS2, the reason for the HDR was to catch the dynamic light (which seems like I am always chasing) and the drama in the clouds with the approaching thunderstorm. LucisArt used for final detail work. I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / SOME OF MY FAVS / click on the image to link to that image / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

  • This was shot in Arlington, WA. One of my favorite pics and the most featured, viewed and favorited of my works here on RedBubble. Thank you! / Using Photoshop, I adjusted the levels and saturation to bring out the colors. Three separate images were composited: old barn ruins, rainbow with tree and clouds. Clone stamped out a telephone wire as well. Trying something new, experimenting with my images in the Orton Style. Shot this with my Kodak Easy Share point & shoot camera. Brought it into Photoshop and added layers and different blending options as well as blur and sharpen. • *Sunflowers and Colorado Sunsets * Revisiting the Sunflower fields I miss so much, a magical place on the eastern plains of Colorado like no where else, a place one day I hope returns. As the front rage of the Colorado Rocky Mountains dances with the setting sun, this scene seemed something out a paradise lost, the kind of thing you only ever read about. On this day when shooting the sunset here, I shot over 400 shots and came back quite a few other times as well. Well worth it I would say! Hope ya all like it! / —-John Minolta 5D / Minolta 50mm f1.7 lens / Singh-Ray CPL / Marumi ND4 / Dynatran Tripod

  • 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr
