  • Taken late afternoon – my first digital image here!

  • view from Kirribilli

  • Taken while walking along the Great Western Highway of Linden, NSW yesterday. The clouds were so lovely I couldn’t resist getting out to photograph, but highway was filled with tourists….so easier and nicer to take a walk.

  • Viewed from the hilltop at Byron Bay lighthouse, NSW, Australia. April, 2005

  • Late afternoon light meets an approaching storm front at Little Hartley, Hartley Valley (NSW Australia). • Sunset at Towradgi beach

  • Sunrise on a cold winters morning at Coogee Baths, Sydney

  • 12-image panorama of the sunset sky over the Jamieson Valley in the Blue Mountains.

  • Oppressive daytime temperatures gave way to a spectacular display of lightning one January evening in 2003. Several storms passed by my location near Alstonville, NSW over a period of around 4 hours. ‘Twin’ cloud-to-ground lightning strikes illuminate a roll cloud formation, which forms on the boundary of warm humid air ahead of the storm and the cooler outflow associated with the arrival of the storm. • This supercell thunderstorm passing out to sea near Potsville in Northern NSW left a lasting ‘impression’ on thousands of cars (mine included) which happened to be in Lismore earlier that afternoon on October 9, 2007. Producing cricket ball sized hail, the storm caused millions of dollars damage to the Lismore central business district and surrounding areas. Whilst as a storm chaser I may have been wise enough to know what was coming, a traffic jam in Lismore at the time of my planned escape sealed my fate along with many others! • A two day journey out to western NSW and a long wait in the 40c heat was rewarded as very dark clouds storm began to brew overhead near Collarenebri. Pulsating lightning bolts that strobed for what seemed like several seconds allowed them to be captured for those with reflexes fast enough. • Several severe thunderstorms had moved through the Northern Rivers earlier this day, however the real magic began after sunset, when a fresh line of extremely lightning active storms developed in the west of the district. For over an hour, lightning bolt after lightning bolt danced across the sky, producing a spectacular display of light and sound that was out of character for so early in spring. • In an ironic twist on the old sailors saying, the atmosphere was stained by the late afternoon reddish hues as a very lightning active storm moved over the Alstonville area in Northern NSW. With many powerful lightning bolts frequently striking the landscape in front of me, it wasn’t too hard to capture a spectacular, branched cloud-to-ground lightning bolt impacting a hill not too far away. • Thunderstorms are one of the most uncontrollable photographic subjects, so to catch a spectacular storm during that golden hour of light around sunset warms a storm chasers heart. The low angle of the sun brought with it some beautiful colours, whilst highlighting the interesting textures in the clouds overhead near Collarenebri, NSW. • Newcastle Ocean Baths sunrise on 2009-10-24 It was a bad day for the most part, but the clouds did part ever so slightly for daybreak. HDR, tone mapping, smoothing done to sky.

  • This is a photo of Culburra Beach. Culburra is one of my favourite weekend destinations in NSW – its only 2 and a half hours south of Sydney and offers a good mix of a relaxing atmosphere and outdoor living. The photo was taken during sunrise, with a dramatic cloud formation the result of an upcoming storm.

  • Going to the Blue Mountains for couple of days to watch Geminid Meteor Shower sounded like a fantastic idea. Sit and relax at night on a cliff 1km above the sea level with a cup of tea and plenty of time before the sunrise – what could go wrong? / / 1. The weather. It was supposed to be a good day with few showers clearing at the evening and with increasing sunshine the next day. So, forecast was not ideal, but there seemed to be a good chance of skies clearing at night. As soon as we got up to the Blue Mountains we drove into the fog-like clouds. They followed us all day long and became really thick at the evening. Did they know our plans? 2. The road. Anvil Rock lookout is just few km from Blackheath. It is facing north and has a great viewing area. It must’ve been a perfect place to see the Geminids appearing past the 11pm at north-east. The problem is that we never got there. All those few kilometers the road is like a washboard. You get a similar experience when driving along the railroad ties. I am sure there are people driving there on 4WDs following the 80km signs, but we really felt that we might lose a wheel or two before getting anywhere on our sedan. Having enough after 300m we decided to stop and walk to the nearest Pulpit Rock lookout. This is the picture with a view at particularly that moment. The photograph is a composite of 4 shots I took manually to have a broad perspective of the surroundings. The .NEF files were then processed for removal of optical distortions, noise, vignetting and stitched into a panorama. A bit of curves, vibrance, more noise removal, crop and here it is the mystical road to the Anvil Rock and Pulpit Rock lookouts.
