I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / SOME OF MY FAVS / click on the image to link to that image / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Loch of the Lowes lies in the beautiful scottish borders between Moffat and Selkirk. It flows into nearby St Mary’s loch (with its thriving sailing club) past old Tibbieshiels inn, hostelry and overnight stop for walkers on the southern upland way crossing Scotland. Overlooking the north end of the loch is a monument to James Hogg – the Scottish Poet known as the Ettrick Shepherd, friend and contemporary of Sir Walter Scott. Taken 4/3/08 (untouched) with a pocket fuji finepix A500 (There is a 2nd loch of the lowes further north in Perthshire, complete with osprey viewing centre – but you can see the wonderful fish eagle hunting here too if you are lucky!) My first ever feature on the home page ages on 23rd April 2008 and what a party that was…LOL See also : ‘i am a rock’ and ‘LoL’ loch of the lowes

  • In life as well as fishing it’s all about the journey! / As the sunrise burned through the fog early Sunday morning, on Clear Lake near Hunstville, Ontario, two fishermen enthusiastically set out for their favourite fishing spot… / This shot was as a result of an early morning walk in / August 2008 in the fog: part planning, part serendipity. I particularly like the fact that compared to a lot of fog shots it displays color, to I think, an advantage and shows the promise of a beautiful sunny summer day emerging… Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens Top Ten Placement in the Nikon D40 Users, Masterpiece challenge, September 2009 / Featured in the Nikon D40 Users group, July 2009 / Top Ten in the Journey or Destination challenge for the First Things group, July 2009 / Featured in the Outsiders, March 2009 / Featured in Canada: The Great White North group September 2008 / Featured in the Nirvana group September 2008 / Avatar for Shots In The Fog group October 2008 / Featured in the ImageWriting group November 2008 / Featured in the 100% group. • This is an old infrared shot. I’ve been doing lots of portraits lately and haven’t had the opportunity to shoot much infrared . I found this one on the hard drive and had a little play with it. It was taken at a place called Little Pelican, down near Swansea. It’s part of Lake Macquarie.

  • Tonights Sunset at Warners Bay, Lake Macquarie, NSW. Long exposure: f/22, ISO100, 124sec. FEATURED in the “Light & Reflection” and the “Dawn & Dusk Light” groups

  • The wind was blowing so hard as the storm approached. My wife was feeding the seagulls and they were just hovering over us. Made for some really neat shots with the Great Salt Lake and the storm in the background.

  • “Floating on Clouds” was shot in Goulds Newfoundland Canada. This is The Dory in natural light. I was talking to a friend about shooting “The Dory” and “Floating on Clouds” and how I used a polarizer to bring out the clouds on the water (as seen here) and removed it and used a flash to shoot “The Dory”. I was wondering in hindsight what I would have come up with if I had used the polarizer and flash at the same time. I know I would have given up about up to two stops with the filter which would have meant a slower shutter speed and the boat was moving, ever so slightly, so it may not have worked out? But maybe next time, live and learn! It is a very old site, once occupied by a small temple dedicated to the worship of the Fates, as recorded in the rare 3rd century epigraph (walled under the northern portico of the castle). Its original religious function was soon replaced by a military function, given its strategic position. In the 13th century the castle passed from the hands of the lords of Toblino into those of the lords of Campo, who owned the castle bearing the same name in the Giudicarie (Castel Campo). Later on, the castle fell into the hands of the church of Trento (1495) and the Cardinal Bernardo Clesio had the place restored and rebuilt (1536-1537) on Renaissance lines, to become a lord´s residence: it was decorated by some of the artists working at the Magno Palazzo of the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento. The prevailing 16th century elements are due to the subsequent transformations (courtyard portico and loggia, round arches) ordered by Gian Gaudenzio Madruzzo. All that remains of the Medieval castle layout are the wall to the west, a turret to the north-west of the present enclosure and the 20 meter high cylindrical tower, which may be considered a keep, strengthening the fortifications closing the summit of the fortified rock. Lake of Toblino This valley bottom lake has marsh vegetation (in particular ) and lacustrine (a few samples of “lamineto” of the ninfea gialla type); At certain points of the shore there are willow groves. The site includes the surrounding hills, where holm oaks woods grow(Celtidi australis-Quercetum ilicis). Nikon Coolpix 990

  • Sometimes, just sometimes reality can exceed all your expectations. The day had been a complete washout with a horrendous storm that seemed to go on forever. Then, just before sunset the storm broke to create one of the most colourful and amazing sunsets I have ever seen. Turned out I was in a great locations as well. Shot on the banks of Derwent Water near Keswick in the English Lake District. Finalist in the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2007
