The Trosky castle was built in the 14th century on two basalt rocks named Panna (Virgin) and Baba (Hag) §. The Czech word ‘Trosky’ means ‘ruins’ and describes well the castle’s conditions after all those centuries… The castle ruin became a landmark of the National Preserve ‘Cesky raj’ (Czech Paradise, or Bohemian Paradise), which was declared a UNESCO Geopark in 2005. So many times have I admired the beautiful silhouette of Trosky at dusk, travelling along it very often when we lived in Berlin, Germany, and went to visit our parents in the Czech Republic for a weekend! Ballyshannon Estury Sunset, by Cat-Art. / © Cat-Art. Ballyshannon, which means “The Mouth of Seannach’s Ford”, after a fifth century warrior Seannach, who was slain here, lies at the mouth of the river Erne. Just west of the town the Erne widens and its waters meander over a long sandy estuary. The northern bank of the river rises steeply away from the riverbank, while the southern bank is flat with a small cliff that runs parallel to the river. From its idyllic setting the town looks out over the estuary and has panoramic views of mountains, lakes and forests.
