  • More from the Lightscapes Set Gorgeous morning at a car boot. I got distracted by this and walked off a bit to take this at 5.30am on a cold winters morning.

  • A fantastic moody shot of London’s famous Tower Bridge. While it appears ancient, it is actually a product off Victorian engineering, a drawbridge with a pedestrian walkway across the top. It was built to compliment nearby Tower of London. This photo captures London’s moody skies with a splash of sunlight hitting the bridge itself.

  • Taken in Clapham, London

  • an old mining pit wheel in a village near where i live, these are dotted about all over this part of the country, left to celebrate the past glory days of the coal mining industry, the sun was just going down, there was frost on the ground and i was frozen !!!!!

  • Painted from an 1880’s photo, of the fishing port of Whitby on the North East coast of England. Here, laid up, is the collier brig, ‘Opal’. The ruins of the priory, immortalised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, can be seen on the hill. My first pen and watercolour work. Watercolour washes over a pencil drawing, then finished in ink. Hannemuhle, 200lb paper 7”x 8”.

  • Taken a few miles east of Leicester, near Allexton. Its that time in the UK, just before the wheat gets harvested – heavy heads beginning to nod gently under the weight of the grain, and the weather unable to decide whether it is summer or not, threatening to flatten the crop, just it is ready. Leicestershire is full of distant horizons like this, and the Barley is all but in now, much of the ground already having been put under the plough in readiness for the next crop.

  • Location: / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: / Multimap Date and Time: / 16 August.2008, 5.49 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/22 : 4 seconds : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / This for me is what makes it all worth while. For every 10 or so times I set the alarm early and creep off out into the darkness, I get a reward of the most amazing of natural light shows. St Margarets Bay this morning was the best i’ve had the good fortune to see and suddenly the 4.a.m. alarm call seemed to be worth it. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast. / And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast. The rest of the painting is from my imagination. Watercolour on two rivers, hand-made 140lb paper. / 14” x 21”

  • Herringfleet Mill can be found where you might least expect to find it – about twenty yards on the Suffolk side of the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Given Norfolk’s monopoly on spectacular, well-preserved mills, it seems only fair that neighbouring Suffolk should have a few of its own…although it should be noted that even this mill is officially in the Norfolk Broads. This photograph was taken on an extremely February day. A 13 seconds’ exposure captured the movement of the clouds as they raced across the East Anglian sky. Canon EOS 5D and EF 16-35mm lens. Exposure of 13 seconds at f/22.
