Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 – 1861) was one of the leading Ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period in 19th century Japan. Among his favourite subjects were cats. This illustration features a woman in a traditional kimono engrossed in what she is reading. Her pet cat is curled up beside her, keeping her company. In the background is a vista of fishermen bringing home their catch. This tshirt is our homage to Utagawa and cats, of course.
