  • Self-portrait. There was once a day during my internship in Japan when a co-worker came to me and said she had to leave because her grandmother had just passed away. Though my Japanese was okay, I was not familiar enough with the custom to know what to say, and I was not the best with words anyhow; even in English it is hard to know what to say in such circumstances. I said to her “cheer-up” but that was it, and she had to leave so that left little time for comforting. I thought about buying her flowers or making origami roses to give her upon her return, but I wasn’t sure if giving paper flowers would be inappropriate. So I asked my mother’s opinion and questioned whether there were certain colors or types of flowers that are more appropriate for such occasions, or things I should avoid. She said in Japan they would use white for this kind of case and if I could make white lilies, it would be appropriate. So that is what I did, and I gave the paper lilies to my co-worker when she returned. So in the end, though my words could not come through, my sorrow was well expressed. My mouth disappears in the back while the lilies light up brightly in front. My mouth is closed and silent, but the lilies made by my hands bloom a thousand words. • Red lily beetles making the most of spring in a garden in Buckinghamshire, England

  • I was going to add this one to my after the rain calendar…but didn’t so I thought I will try it on for size on RB!

  • I tried to do some macro photography outside in my garden after the rains, and found this Inca Lily with droplets on the stamen and the inside of the flower. I tried several shots (but without a tripod) and had a few blurry pictures from that. But I also got a few really nice ones and I especially love this one – love the sunburst on drops and could not get those for a while. Did something right and this one droplet has a sunburst! • Yellow lily. What looks like it’s reflection is actually another flower on the same stalk. Shot a few years back with my Canon AE-1 Program (film Camera) with A 70-210mm zoom lens. It’s my most favourite photo I’ve ever done. I think it because I was surprises how well it turned out, plus it’s just plain beautiful! MY BUBBLESITE

  • Nikon Coolpix P80 Beautiful in both looks and perfume, the Formosan Lily has become quite a weed pest in native bushland. The following is from “Burke’s Backyard”. Common name: Taiwan lily, Formosa lily Botanic name: Lilium formosanum / The species name formosanum is Latin, meaning ‘from Formosa’. The island of Formosa is now Taiwan. Description: A bulbous plant with upright, straight, flowering stems 1-1.8m (up to 6’) tall in summer. Clusters of 1-3 lightly scented, trumpet-shaped flowers are borne at the top of each stem. The flowers are white with a pale yellow throat, and some have pink staining on the outside of the petals or when in the bud. Problem areas: This plant has escaped from gardens and naturalised in southeast Australia from Queensland to Victoria and also on Lord Howe Island. It is usually found along roadside verges, drainage ditches, on wasteland and in bushland. Reasons for success: The Taiwan lily grows from seed, bulbs and fleshy leaves (called bulb scales). The plant grows from seed to flowering stage in around 6-9 months (most lilies take two years from seed until flowering). Each flower produces hundreds of seeds. As the seeds mature, the seed pods are held upright and open slowly. Seeds are released over a 4-8 week period to take advantage of good conditions. Seeds are light and travel long distances on the wind. Even a single plant dumped in bushland can become the nucleus of a new weed infestation.
