A depiction of an achiever striving to climb to the top of the social ladder, however risky that may be… Self-portrait using tripod and wireless remote. Lighting consisted of ceiling halogen spots and two clamp-on brooder lamps with 150W crystal clear incandescent light bulbs, positioned to light the wall behind me and reduce shadows, while procuring a little on my legs from the sides. I had to make several tries going up and down the ladder, checking the results, making adjustments, climbing back up, pushing the remote button, going back down again to check/adjust… Focal length 35mm / ISO-800 / Aperture f/5.3 / Shutter 1/13 sec. Stanage Edge in Derbyshire is the longest gritstone edge in England at 3.5 miles in length and is a popular haunt for rock climbers like the chap featured here! / The weather (and the light) can change quickly in this region, so I was lucky to have a brief spell of good light on this otherwise dull day. The delicate little flowers of Hardenbergia violacea – Purple Coral Pea, a beautiful climber originating from Australia
Scanning old negatives from my archive, I have found a photograph of Cinque Torri (Five Towers) and Tofanas taken very late in the afternoon. I liked the combination of dark clouds and remaining summer haze that made the background looking very flat like in a painting. Just before clouds covered the sun completely, last rays fell on the Cinque Torri, a group of rocks very popular by climbers. To complete the feeling I had about the picture, I’ve applied ‘colored pencils’ filter in post-processing of this photograph. Dolomiti, Italy. August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, sharpening, colored pencils, color enhancement, blend modes. Detail of the image showing the ‘color pencils’ effect:

shot taken out of a helicopter flown by Air Zermatt. If you look at my image “on the way to the peak” it shows a part of that dark triangle which forms the so famous “face” of that mountain.
Harbour Bridge Climbers on the way down…. Sydney, Australia, October 2007 / Canon IXUS 900TI Bridgeclimb Passionate as I am about all things Australia at the moment…. I thought I would share one of my favourite experiences…... / I managed to complete the climb myself, (despite a completely irrational fear of heights!), and would highly recommend the experience to EVERYONE! / Some will say “but the pylon lookout is much cheaper”.... yes, but the sense of achievement and 360 degree views of the beautiful city are well worth the extra dollars!!!

Climbers on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Part of a new series I’m thinking about “Gritty City”. Bit tired of only showing the pretty city, so grittiness coming. Mainly b&w, I think – it’s a thought in progress…. © Sara Lamond 2007 / /
