  • The constant parade of swells breaking at Bells Beach always thrills a surfer when they arrive and see this view from the carpark. Although on this day, it was only for the ‘brave and daring’ as the surf was the result of a very severe storm the previous day and was very heavy and a bit messy.

  • Man this was one of the hardest shots I’ve taken. It’s a moonlit wave breaking against a cliff. The problem is that in order to shoot water under moonlight you have to do a long exposure (usually over 5 seconds) but when you do that it all tends to smooth out and lose any shape to the wave. In order to get the action of the wave break therefore I had to keep the exposure to at least a second. But to do that I had to push the ISO through the stratoshphere (ISO 1600) and then had a tonne of noise to get rid of. Anyway, I kind of like the result and thought I’d put it up to see what you think. The light parts of the sky are actually the seaspray caught in the light of the moon which is just out of frame. / If you’ve never seen storm waves under a full moon you really are missing something spectacularly beautiful. This sea swell was 4m and those cliffs are 50m high so you can get an idea how big that wave break is. Just standing off to one side watching wave after wave pound against that cliff under the eery light of the moon was just sheer magic despite me and the gear getting absolutely soaked with seaspray. Hope the camera still works – too scared to test it – may have been the most expensive night out of my life lol. Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII / Tv: 1 sec / Av: f/2.8 / ISO: 1600 / FL: 1600

  • Beachy Head Clifftop and Lighthouse / My frist ever visit to Beachy Head, and I definitely think I’ll be heading back again:-) Nikon D700 with 24-120mm Lense. Beachy Head Now forms part of the newly designated National Park, The South Downs, and is a chalk headland on the south coast of England, close to the town of Eastbourne in the county of East Sussex, immediately east of the Seven Sisters. The cliff there is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, rising to 162 m (530 ft) above sea level. The peak allows views of the south east coast from Dungeness to the east, to Selsey Bill in the west. Many people come here to commit suicide, but for the life of me I can’t understand why. For when I am confronted with such sheer beauty, the last thing on earth that I’d be thinking about it leaving this beauty behind. About this Photo / I travelled here from London, the weather was not looking too promising, heavey rain all the way to the coast. As I arrived the storm front cleard leaving partially blue skies with fluffy fast moving clouds. The blue/green sea looked quite awesome, and the lighthouse was clear. One more thing would have made this composition complete, some people standing on the headland. It was one of those compromise pictures, either people in the foreground or people on the headland. I opted for the former:-) believeing it gives a great sense of scale. The wind was quite strong, so I had to sit to get a good solid position to hold the camera. Shot it in S mode rather than A to set a fast shutter speed to avoid camera shake. I’ll definitely be going back for some more though.
