  • The Short-Clawed Otter (Aonyx cinerea), also known as the Oriental Small Claw Otter, is currently listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This small mammal is the smallest of the otters, but, unfortunately, they remain somewhat of a mystery because of lack of research and study. / As its name suggests, the Short-Clawed Otter has claws that are much smaller than other otters’. • “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” / — William Shakespeare (Twelfth Night)

  • A Lion once fell in love with a beautiful maiden and proposed marriage to her parents. The old people did not know what to say. They did not like to give their daughter to the Lion, yet they did not wish to enrage the King of Beasts. At last the father said: “We feel highly honoured by your Majesty’s proposal, but you see our daughter is a tender young thing, and we fear that in the vehemence of your affection you might possibly do her some injury. Might I venture to suggest that your Majesty should have your claws removed, and your teeth extracted, then we would gladly consider your proposal again.” The Lion was so much in love that he had his claws trimmed and his big teeth taken out. But when he came again to the parents of the young girl they simply laughed in / his face, and bade him do his worst. Love can tame the wildest

  • Grizzly bears are currently found in only 2 percent of their historic range within the U.S. In the early 1800s, an estimated 100,000 grizzlies lived in the western United States (excluding Alaska), but their numbers declined greatly as settlers moved west. Logging, mining, and road construction further reduced grizzly numbers by destroying their habitat. Today, there are about 1,000 of these bears in Montana, northern Idaho, northeastern Washington, and Wyoming. In Alaska, the grizzly bear population is estimated at 30,000. / / The grizzly bears that live in the Bronx Zoo are part of a unique conservation intervention by the Wildlife Conservation Society. The bears had been encroaching on human habitat—a problem that leads to all sorts of conflicts in places throughout the world where animals and people share their turf. As a result of being nuisance bears,” they faced possible euthanization. Working together with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the zoo was able to provide a refuge for the bears. / / WCS field conservationists based in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are monitoring energy development projects, predator-prey dynamics, and human-wildlife conflicts across the landscape to protect grizzly bears and other Western wildlife species. WCS Canada operates the Yellowstone-to-Yukon initiative. This field program seeks to repair habitat fragmentation and maintain an interconnected ecoregion that can support the grizzly bear and other wide-ranging animals. (Bronx Zoo) / / On March 22, 2007, The US Federal Government stated that Grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park (Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem) no longer need Endangered Species Act protection. Several environmental organizations including the NRDC have since brought legal suit against the federal government to relist the grizzly bear. / (Wiki) Olympus E510

  • This otter is one of the smallest and most charismatic of the otter family. it definitely scores a 10/10 for cuteness . Apart from its size the Otter can also be distinguished by the fact that its claws hardly ever extrudes from its feet. The front paws have similar dexterity as our fingers and thumbs. It tends to holds its food and during playtime tosses a little stone in the air and catches it very skilfully. You can often observe how the otter actually washes its food before it will eat it. / Often you can observe this Otter either carries a small stone under its arm pits or tosses it in the air to catch it. Alternatively they just tosses the stone from one paw to the other. it appears to be an endless pastime, until it is time to feed or sleep. They have a strict sense of order, similar to Meerkats. No angry squabbling, stealing of food, or trying to mate with your brothers or sisters is tolerated. If an otter steps out of line, they get warned once by the others and if happens again they have to leave the community. Wish we could do this to some humans too. It’s natural habitat can be found from south east India to southern china. A truly amphibious animal, the Asian short-clawed otter can be found in, and around, rivers, creeks, estuaries, coastal waters (, mangroves and rice fields and not unusual to find it close to human settlements. Sadly the human species is a tremendous threat to its survival in its natural habitat due to deforestation, pollution of rivers due to farming and industry and destruction of areas and sources. Its main diet consists of fish, and crustaceans , but also eats some vegetables and roots. Sadly the Indonesian and Malaysian Government consider it of great national importance to destroy thousands of hectares of virgin forest every day. The population explosion in countries like India, also destroys their natural habitat and sources for food.
