Thomas Nast immortalized Santa Claus’ current look with an initial illustration in an 1863 issue of Harper’s Weekly, as part of a large illustration titled “A Christmas Furlough” in which Nast set aside his regular news and political coverage to do a Santa Claus drawing. Thanks Christmas Ode Once upon a merry day / There rode a fat man on his sleigh / Clad in red with a beard of white / Gliding through the cold winter’s night / Pulled along by creatures that flew / In the back in a sack were the gifts that were due / To be delivered before the night’s end / And so onto rooftops he would descend / And the creatures would watch as he raided his loot / Before entering a house via the chimney shoot / He would then leave the gifts beneath the big green tree / Before helping himself to some milk and cookies / Left there for him by the tenants of the house / Who come morning would find the gifts he’d left out / And the whole family would have a jolly old day / And by that morning he would be parking his sleigh / Thanking his little helpers and feeding carrots to his friends / Before getting back to work because his work never ends 08.12.09
