  • OUT OF LATVIA
    by Stephen Jackson

OUT OF LATVIA [Sunday Telegraph’s title] Riga is the colour of the Eastern bloc, like nougat kicked around in a gutter. Beyon…

My pal Suzanne has suggested that I add more prose to my profile. So here’s the long version of a feature which appeared in the late 1990’s in both the Sunday Telegraph and the late (reasonably lamented) European. I’m sure the political vicissitudes I mention here have since sorted themselves out peachily – don’t they always – but the role in our British media for this kind of reportage diminishes by the day.

For those who’ve heard of the classic BBC TV Comedy, Dad’s Army, this is my extended version of the theme. If you don’t know it then stop reading now. If you do, then maybe (just maybe) you might find it tickles your funny bone. There was originally only the first verse and the second. But I added a verse for each character. It works to the music but sometimes you have to sing it right (no I’m not going to sing it!)

  • So Great a Loss
    by Patty Gross

Exposes animal abuse which is everywhere. Many ways to help these innocent animals. Animal adoption. Touching, heartwarming.

Ridge was adopted from an animal shelter in Bangor, Maine in 2000. After spending the first three years of his life in utter terror. Many atrocious acts were committed against this sweet dog. His life with us was one of mutual respect, loyalty, and love. He came to us as a very neurotic, frightened young dog. I like to think he left with a sense of pride in the wonderful and handsome dog he became.
