  • Sans famille - Remi and me.

This and last year, my routine is to get a new painting started approximately every second or third week. So I can take it to Hazelhurst where Melissa can then advise me to put more green on the skin (and adjust the proportions). / / Roughly on the weekends I start to think about what I’d like to paint next. It’s like having a store-room or chamber, in the back of my head where certain subjects are sitting, leaning, standing, gathering dust, waiting to be picked. / Somewhere I read about favourite illustrations. / It could easily have been on RedBubble (Information overload!) It might have been BookCrossing! / My favourite illustration of all is Remi, standing outside the courthouse, after Vitalis has been put in gaol. (It’s by G. van Raemdonck, in the 1940 edition of the Dutch Version of Sans Famille, by Hector Malot .) / / So, now the urge to copy that illustration and ‘dress’ Remi in the colours that I think are appropriate, has surfaced and I shall be taking this ‘work’, to work on, in about an hour, to Hazelhurst. / Having the painting will, for me combine several pleasant memories. / I.e., my mother reading that book to me several times, when I was far too young – so she first left out all the very sad bits – and, in 2005, walking along the Seine, with my Sydney-born daughter, asking the people, minding the second-hand book stalls there, if they had the book, in its original French. / The fun of watching my daughter communicate with these interesting people, so easily, in French and particularly the exchange with the book-seller who advised against buying it because, as a boy, he’d seen the black and white film (I saw that here many years ago, on Sydney t.v., too!) / He said my daughter would cry too, if she read it. / But she did buy it. Not only that but also the second book, which I’d forgotten about. / Several of the booksellers pointed to a street, across the Seine to where Hector Malot used to live. / My other connection with the book, is memories of Mr John Fredericks, our French Teacher, at Maroubra Bay High School (Heartbreak High), unkindly known as’Freddy the Frog by the students, mentioning the book to another Dutch-born boy and me. / Hans and I were pleased about that because our generation (roughly baby-boomers) grew up with that book, in the Netherlands, the way English reading boys grew up with Biggles, Treasure Island, Rip Van Winkle, Oliver Twist, ....... I need to get ready….... .......5 hours later…... Back home again.

RH HALL SAID THEY HAD AN EMILY DICKINSON READ FEST LAST NIGHT WHAT A GREAT IDEA!! / ..I AM POSTING 2 MORE I DEEPLY RELATE TO.. PLEASE POST YOUR FAVORITE EMILY DICKINSON HERE….ALSO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO POST A PHOTO OR PAINTING WITH IT I THINK THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL! MY FIRST: HEART, we will forget him! / You and I, to-night! / You may forget the warmth he gave, / I will forget the light. / / When you have done, pray tell me, / That I my thoughts may dim; / Haste! lest while you’re lagging, / I may remember him! AND I ENVY seas whereon he rides, / I envy spokes of wheels / Of chariots that him convey, / I envy speechless hills / / That gaze upon his journey; / How easy all can see / What is forbidden utterly / As heaven, unto me! / / I envy nests of sparrows / That dot his distant eaves, 10 / The wealthy fly upon his pane, / The happy, happy leaves / / That just abroad his window / Have summer’s leave to be, / The earrings of Pizarro 15 / Could not obtain for me. / / I envy light that wakes him, / And bells that boldly ring / To tell him it is noon abroad,— / Myself his noon could bring, / / Yet interdict my blossom / And abrogate my bee, / Lest noon in everlasting night / Drop Gabriel and me.

Well, everyone at redbubble today Agust 31 2008, is a momentous occassion. I woke up, at 6:30am, as always, went straight to the computer, as an addicted redbubbler that I am: Before anything else, showering, brushing teeth, even feeding the cat….to check if I have any featured works. That, is all important to me…. Sitting alone in my apt. wondering, which, if any photos have been accepted into the big circle…..After one has been treated to making a feature page or in a group, I for one find that the ultimate of recognition….. after, the many comments and views…......LOW AND BEHOLD ~ I, ME, MOI…................. have made my the very….... F I R S T PHOTOGRAPH SALE, ......... in my life! / I have made the local papers, cover of a magazine, used a shot in an artical..But, never, NEVER, has anyone bought, paid money for one of my shots!!!! / I am so thankful to whom ever made the purchase… Whether it was a sympathy purchase or not, I don’t care. Thankyou. For those of you who sell at an alarming rate, this event doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. For me, it is amazing. REDBUBBLE, and all of you that support taking time to look at my work I Thankyou….....

  • One of my absolute favourite things in the Universe to escape to… The Greek and Classical Mythology Group just got squeezed from the World Wide World Egg by the Serpentine Goddess Ananke… the Goddess of my Necessity to have a little niche for all things of the Ancient Greek and Roman (or Mediterranean) cultures… I know there are heaps of people inspired by the ancient muses… a place to travel WAY back in time… There are no upload rules EXCEPT there must be a clear reference in the piece and in the description to myth or legend from GREECE and/or ROME and the immediately surrounding Mediterranean areas… I may consider EGYPTIAN mythology down the track as they do eventually entwine a bit… Any ideas or queries are graciously accepted… kathleen the moderator

Your sweet smell lingers / Lonely on my mind. / The shadows of your features / Engraved in my sight. / The colours so bright / Cheer my lonely sight. / O’ my sweet Orpheus / Save me from my fate / That looks me in the eye / With a passion so wild. / Your scent is so great / Your vision takes over. / O’ Orpheus, my beloved, / Take me away from the dark / Show me the light again / Let me breathe your scent / Let me touch and feel your body. / Wake me up to your warmth. Hidden am I from your love / In this dungeon in the dark. I think of you and your song. / Sing to me my sweet one. / Use your music to show me / The love you desire. / For in my heart it is there / With a passion to be given. There is no night or day, / Where I now forever dwell. / I am bound to this life / A solitary darkness within / But with your image embedded / I will not die again.

  • Classic Meoldies, Tasteless Lyrics

(The Author Confesses – I originally posted this last year on another forum. But it’s unlikely that anyone at RedBubble has read it, and anyway, recycling ought to be encouraged, right?) CLASSIC MELODIES, TASTELESS LYRICS God gave me a limited range of talents. And those that he did give me – well, sometimes I just wonder what he had in mind. I mean really, what purpose is served by my vandalising of time-honoured and much-loved tunes? Perry Como recorded a song back in the Sixties called Seattle. Remember it? Nice happy ditty about a boy leaving home to find his true love. Or it was, at any rate, until I heard a news report about the death of an American academic: They’ve got a dead professor now in Montana / Another good guy’s going bad in Montana / When he rots, what a smell / See his friends run like hell / Dig a hole and drop him in / And shed a tear and pass the gin / And that’s the way they say farewell in Montana / In Montana… Not exactly Bob Dylan. More like Tom Lehrer, or Weird Al Yankovic. Still, it’s useful in times of stress to be able to privately mock your oppressors. This rework of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day was inspired by a former place of employment: Oh, life’s perfect at PA / We’re so happy we could all puke! / So happy at PA / We just want to burn this joint / We just want to tear it down… The theme music from that great Western The Magnificent Seven was used for many years in advertisements for a certain brand of cigarette. The tune was running through my head one day, and suddenly… Children, don’t smoke Marlboros / Tobacco will only kill you / Save your money, and save your lungs / A human chimney is not pretty! Sometimes a song is so soppy that it screams out for improvement. If Bonnie Tyler had had my lyrics, she’d still have a career today. I was lost in France, and the men with guns were waiting, / I was lost in France while the nuns were Well, maybe not. And if you’re a Roberta Flack fan, you should probably finish right now. The first time you ever sat on my face / You said my nose was just too damned cold / And you complained that I hadn’t shaved that day / Well that’s too bad / Your mama likes me that way... The first time you ever wore the uniform / You said you felt like such a fool / I said Don’t worry, darling, you look fine / Now get ready to be spanked / You’ve been a naughty little girl... The first time we watched the neighbours get undressed / You said We’re crazy, we’ll be caught by the police / I said We’re safe, they’re down at number 5 / I hear they put on a good show, that’s where we’ll be tomorrow night...

I listen to many types of music. Depending on what I am working on I listen to the music that will help inspire me to create a better image. These are some of the music I listen to: American Indian Flute music, Josh Groban, Earth,Wind and Fire, Teddy Pendergrass, Contemporary Indian music, Kitaro Silk Road Suite, Classical, Folk music, contemporary Jazz, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, New Age. I have a varied taste in music and art. Maybe we can find out what other people use to inspire their work musically.

In 2007 I spent some time in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. From the thousands of photographs taken there, I selected one hundred, and from these, the chosen ten. They will form this Florence Series and cover a broad cross-section of subject matter from old to new, classic to modern, landscape to macro and daylight to dark. / Florence is an exciting place, with history oozing out of the very stones. The warlike nature of its medieval past is evidenced by the fortified buildings scattered throughout the city, and its close affinity to the arts by its magnificent structures, bronzes, marble statues and beautiful modern shop fronts. / Ten images will appear, one per day, as follows: / #1 – Ponte Vecchio by Night: The oldest bridge in Florence, it was spared by the retreating German army who destroyed the other 5 bridges across the River Arn. Probably going back to Roman times with its stone pillars and wooden planks; it was built in stone but then newly destroyed by a flood in 1333. / #2 – Gates of Paradise (1) Michelangelo referred to these doors as fit to be the “Gates of Paradise”, and they are still invariably referred to by this name. Giorgio Vasari described them a century later as “undeniably perfect in every way and must rank as the finest masterpiece ever created”. / #3 – Bargello Heraldics This displays some of the heraldic ‘shields’ displayed on walls beside the external staircase from an enclosed open courtyard to the second floor of Florence’s historic Bargello Museum. / #4 – from Bargello Museum This was once a fortified prison, with high walls and an open central courtyard. This is the view of the fortified bell-tower taken from within the courtyard, the sky being partly obscured by archways. / #5 – Classic and Ordinary This photo was completely un-posed – a street scene – and struck me with its ordinariness in a classically Italian way. / #6 – Colourburst Window shopping, by day or night in Florence, is a kaleidoscope of colour and beauty. / #7 – Dom Late Afternoon By late afternoon, however, the crowds thin somewhat, and the setting sun bathes the green and white marble structure in glorious rich warm light. / #8 – Boboli Gardens Rust This macro demonstrates the frustrations faced by the keepers and maintainers of Florence’s huge Boboli Gardens: rust. I call this “An Ant’s Eye View.” / #9 – Silver Mask in Medici Pitti Palace The Medici family, immensely wealthy, determined, ruthless and cruel, were supporters of the arts, and, some say, inspired and facilitated the Renaissance and subsequent growth in artistic expression through which Florence led the world. / #10 – Giant Face in Boboli Gardens Called “Roman Head” by some observers, this 4 metre high statue appears made from a series of castings.
