  • Mt Clarence is a dominant feature of Albany in the south of Western Australia, some 450 kms from Perth. It’s a bit of a climb up but once you get there the views are stunning. Here we are looking across Princess Royal Harbour to Bald Head and the area where the whaling station is.

  • This 3 photo pano is what you see when you stand atop Mt Clarence in Albany, Western Australia. The Princess Royal Harbour is on the right and King George Sound on the left. In the distance is the Whaling Station and the rolling hills of the Torndirrup National Park. Albany is about 430/440 kms south of Perth and it shouldn’t take much more than 5 hours easy driving including a couple of refreshment stops

  • The village of Clarence Town is located on the Williams River 55km north of Newcastle, 32km north of Maitland and 27km north of Raymond Terrace. The district was first settled by white settlers following the visit of Lieutenant Colonel Paterson, who travelled up the Williams River in 1801. The settlers were first involved in cedar cutting, performed with convict labour from 1801 and the river was used to transport the timber to Maitland and Newcastle and beyond. The village of Clarence Town was surveyed and proclaimed in 1823. The Clarence Town river port and ship building industry quickly began to grow, as timber in the area was plentiful and of good quality. In 1826 a tobacco factory and tannery were operating, by early 1830 a boat building yard had commenced operation. Clarence Town received a Post Office in 1838 however this particular post office photographed was opened on the 4th July 1860. In 1848 Clarence Town had 18 houses and a population of 93 people and by 1863 the village boasted a population of 300 and was quite self sufficient with most areas of industry and supply catered for locally or by river shipment. /

  • Clarence Dock Leeds. (royal amouries)

  • Oil on Canvas. Painted en plein air at Grafton Artsfest. This is the view I saw from my front verandah all the years I was growing up in Grafton. Not so highly coloured of course- I had a go at a more naturalistic palette and it was truly dreadful, so took it back to the studio and pushed those colours as hard as I could.

  • An old jetty in Yamba, New South Wales. Has since been demolished. Yamba is a town at the mouth of the Clarence River in New South Wales. The first European to visit the area was Matthew Flinders, who stopped by in Yamba Bay for six days in July 1799. The town economy is strongly based on fishing and tourism, but has a diverse range of influences. Due to the ‘Sea Change’ phenomena and the large amount of baby boomers who are starting to retire to the warmer northern climates, Yamba is experiencing further growth particularly in service industries. At the 2001 census, Yamba had a population of 5,621, but as a popular tourist destination, it can triple its population in the holiday period. At present the population is growing at a rate of 3% pa. • This is my friend Pete’s fishing boat at about 6am on the Clarence river at Christmas time. This time of morning was so beautiful! We were spending a week with friends on a houseboat. The biggest decision i had to make was weather to sit and watch this view in the mornings or take the opportunity to use that glassy water for a ski! / It was very pretty and very enjoyable either way!

  • I never thought I would ever get this close to a Lion. What an impressive animal.

  • The Zig Zag Railway is located at Clarence on the western edge of the Blue Mountains in NSW Australia. It is a masterpiece in Victorian Engineering, built in the 1860s and literally zig zagged its way down the steep mountain to Lithgow on the other side. This was achieved by tunnels and magnificent viaducts that still stand today. The rail line was built in a series of levels that required the train carriages to be parked on different levels while the engine was unhooked and shunted to the other end of the train for the next descent. Today it is a major tourist attraction and offers a wonderful day out for train enthusiasts and families. For more info on the Zig Zag Railway click HERE /
