  • Oil painting of zebra stallions fighting for dominance over mares. Best viewed ‘large’. The original painting is 30×40 inches on blocked canvas and took just over 2 months to paint. The painting is mounted in a huge 1×1.25 metre frame.

  • Oil painting of a leopard and her cub. Photographic reference by kind permission of famous wildlife photographers Michel and Christine Denis-Huot. This is my favourite painting depicting what is rumoured to be Halftail and Zawadi (Shadow) of Big Cat Diary fame but I cannot confirm whether this is true. Sadly, both Halftail and Shadow were killed and it still breaks my heart to think that these beautiful and precious animals are no longer with us. The painting is 20×30 inches and took me more than three months to complete. A substantial percentage of any sale of a wildlife painting will be donated to conservation and animal protection.

  • "Survivors" - Oil Painting
    by Avril Brand

    US$4.32–US$98.80

“Survivors” is an oil painting showing two orphaned cheetah cubs from Namibia who were rescued soon after their mother was trapped by a farmer. Their little faces depict the sadness, fear and uncertainty the future holds for them. Original oil painting on canvas: 20×30 inches Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth, reaching speeds of up to 100 kph (70mph). Beautiful and sleek, they are the smallest of the big cats and their prey is often stolen by other predators. Highly threatened, these animals are in great need of protection. They need plenty of space for hunting and that space is steadily being reduced by human expansion. Out of all the big cats, the cheetah is the least able to adapt to new environments. It has always proved difficult to breed in captivity, although recently a few zoos have managed to succeed at this. Once widely hunted for its fur, the cheetah now suffers more from the loss of both habitat and prey. • Oils on canvas painting of the cliffs overlooking Kilkee with George’s Head in the distance. On the foreground, I painted Sea Pinks – my favourite flower and that of my departed friend, Hannah. Sea Pinks only grow and bloom along the coast and what a wondrous sight to see these delicate flowers form bushes of pink so close to the sea. In memory of my dear friend, Hannah of Kilbaha. Her gentle and kind nature and her unflinching belief in the goodness of people gave me hope and helped us adapt in a strange land. Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand

  • "Cliffs of Clare"
    by Avril Brand

    US$4.32–US$98.80

Oils on canvas (sold). After visiting Doolin, I tried to remember the cliffs Cliffs of Moher in County clare) and painted this scene from my memory. Strong sunset, I know. This painting was done soon after we moved to Clare from Dublin and I think the memories of African sunsets were still strong in my mind. Nevertheless, I soon learned that these sunsets are not so unusual albeit more tinged with lilacs and purples. Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand Clare Art Blog

  • “Little Sister” is a sibling of the cheetah cubs in the “Survivors” painting. She is one of the four cheetah cubs rescued from certain death. Oil painting on canvas (original sold). Cheetah cubs have a high mortality rate due to genetic factors and predation by carnivores in competition with the cheetah, such as the lion and hyena. Recent inbreeding causes cheetahs to share very similar genetic profiles. This has led to poor sperm, birth defects, cramped teeth, curled tails, and bent limbs. Some biologists now believe that they are too inbred to flourish as a species. Cheetahs are included on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) list of vulnerable species (African subspecies threatened, Asiatic subspecies in critical situation) as well as on the U.S. ESA: threatened species – Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Approximately 12,400 cheetahs remain in the wild in twenty-five African countries; Namibia has the most, with about 2,500. Another fifty to sixty critically endangered Asiatic cheetahs are thought to remain in Iran. There have been successful breeding programs, including the use of in-vitro fertilization, in zoos around the world. Founded in Namibia in 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund’s mission is to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and education on cheetahs and their eco-systems, working with all stakeholders to achieve best practice in the conservation and management of the world’s cheetahs. The CCF has also set stations throughout South Africa in order to keep the conservation effort going. The Cheetah Conservation Foundation was set up in 1993 for cheetah protection. It is based in South Africa. Reference Wikipedia Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand Clare Art Blog

  • This painting of a stone bridge was a lot fun to do. There are so many old bridges in Ireland so this bridge became symbolic of all the lovely old bridges I have seen. So, somewhere in Ireland, I imagine, there is a stone bridge that looks like this one. • "George's Head, Kilkee"
    by Avril Brand

    US$4.32–US$98.80

Named ‘George’s Head’ because it resembled the old King’s features, this is a landmark of great beauty in County Clare, Ireland. Long walks along the beach all the way around the Cliffs and views that take your breath away. I have long believed the the area around Loop Head is the most beautiful in Ireland. • Oil painting of Scattery Island.(sold). I spent one of the most wonderful days on Scattery Island. Deserted now, the very stones and ruins are saturated with history. Located approximately one mile off Kilrush, Scattery Island is home to a monastic settlement founded in the early 6th century by St. Senan who was born locally and was named after the mythical monster on the Island. Now uninhabited there are many ruins on the island including those of seven churches, a unique 10th century round tower (one of the highest in Ireland – featured in the painting next to the church) and a holy well which is said to have healing qualities – its water was enjoyed by the inhabitants of the island for many centuries. Scattery has had many invasions down through the centuries; the Vikings invaded during the early 9th century but Brian Boru later recaptured the island. The graveyards and ruins are very special as there are still people living in Cappa who were inhabitants on Scattery Island. • Oil painting on canvas (20×26inches). A wonderful old lady in Kilrush showed me an old calender with this photograph taken during the late 1800’s. It was hard to distinguish any features and everything was blurry but I could not resist trying to paint the scene. Of course, with a bit of artistic license as I had no idea what colours to use except for my visit to Scattery Island. All the buildings are now in ruins but I found some references through the library and I hope I did justice to the Island and the people on the photograph (as well as the donkey!) Painting this was a fascinating project and I found myself mesmerised by the little girl standing to the right hand side. While the adults pose, this little girl is caught at a strange moment. She is staring at the photographer (or artist) strangely – as if to say. “Intruder” The community is no longer there and I wonder what happened to the little girl. • Painting of Knappogue Castle, county Clare, Ireland. This was quite a challenging painting but very enjoyable to do. It was a commission for a lady who I think wanted it for a friend who had her wedding reception here. (sold) The Knappogue Castle & Walled Garden, built in 1467, is located in County Clare, Ireland. It was built by Sean MacNamara, and is a good example of a medieval tower house. It has a long and varied history, from a battlefield to a dwelling place. In 1571 the castle became the seat of the MacNamara Clan ~ Earls of West Clancullen. Donagh MacNamara was a leader of the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and Knappogue remained in MacNamara hands throughout the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s. However, after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland (1649-53) it was confiscated by Oliver Cromwell’s parliament and granted to a ‘Roundhead’, Arthur Smith. However, after the monarchy was restored in 1660, Knappogue was returned to its MacNamara owners. In 1855, the castle was acquired by Lord Dunboyne, who continued the restoration work. Dating from 1817, the beautiful 1.248 acre (5,000 m²) garden is now restored to its former splendour. Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand Clare Art Blog

  • "Lahinch by Moonlight"
    by Avril Brand

    US$3.99–US$91.20

This is an oil painting of Lahinch, county Clare, Ireland and is one of my first paintings of county Clare. (sold) This painting was done entirely from my imagination. Lahinch is a beautiful and popular seaside resort and lures surfers from all over Ireland. But for me, the best time is when there is no one around. As in this painting. • Oil painting on canvas of Lahinch Beach, a popular resort in County Clare, Ireland. It shows a lobster pot and the lovely stretch of beach with the town far away in the distance. Photographic reference kindly permitted by a very talented photographer, Steven of Mountshannon on sxu. Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand Clare Art Blog

  • Oil painting (sold) of Kilrush Bridge in the lovely county of Clare, Ireland. In the distance is St Senan’s Church. This view of Kilrush Bridge is seldom seen and should you ever visit this beautiful town, do take a drive to Cappa and on your way back, note the bridge.
