Acrylic on canvas. A good few years ago I attended a workshop on painting abstract Cityscapes with pieces of cardboard. The work that I painted that day remains in a drawer somewhere as every one in the room painted and identical composition with matching sunburnt skies. I couldn’t wait to get home and try out the technique, using my own photos and palette. Eight hours in Sydney is the result of that work. Painted using cardboard, credit cards, cardboard, brushes and gladwrap. I have since used this technique when working with school children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Even though the tools may be the same .. the results of each painting are quite different. It is important to note that I provided each child with a choice of reference photos. So they learnt to use the technique and create their own original works instead of copying mine. At the front you can see my demonstration piece. On the tables are student works drying. This was a very popular activity. My work sold at auction and I received two commissions from people who missed out. I also facilitated a larger work that was painted by adults with intellectual disabilities. It was sold at exhibition to the BHSC Mayor ! (c) sooz 2008

Sydney Harbour In Monochrome / Best viewed in large / Taken in two frames stitched and converted into monochrome / Camera: Canon 20 D / f/11.0 30 secs FL 17 mm / Metering mode: Evaluative / Exposure Program: Manual
This image shows Sydney Harbour from Taronga Zoo (the giraffes and elephants really do seem to have the best view in the city). I have taken an original photograph, converted it to a vector graphic and then manually flattened some of the colour to give it a kind of screen-print effect, inspired by those classic travel posters of the 1920s and ‘30s.
Taken on a visit to the old stomping ground, Sydney. This is in front of Custom’s House at Circular Quay. I do sometimes miss the energy and pace of the city, it’s constant noise and movement, but it only lasts a day or so…or until my next visit when I can’t wait to get out of the place! An alleyway off Argyle Street in Sydney’s Rocks area. Playing with the white balance, used incandescent here, has given these beautiful blues and greens. Nikon D700 / with 24-70mm @ 45mm / ISO 200 / f/2.8 / 1.6 seconds Now showing in a calendar here…
