This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others. I really hope that you enjoy them. The shadowy image of this chair highlighted in a closed down shopfront revealed itself to me one day as I passed by on a bus. It seems to be half way between scary and mysterious.
Man walking with an Umbrella… where to?, where from?... and Why?
This award-winning digital painting hearkens to a child’s imagination and the amazing journeys that it can take them on.
From my window one day many years ago… In the city of Domodossola, Northern Piedmont, Italy
The next image from my Neverland Collection of landscape photographs. All these images were taken with Kodak Highspeed Infrared black and white film. After flying over Antarctica one New Years Eve I became facinated with the play of light over the landscape and felt the landscape devoid of humaity is incredibly coherent and powerful and set out to capture that in photographs. This particular image is not totally devoid of the traces of humaity as its technically a cityscape. It was shot from a park in Dover Heights in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney very late in the afternoon and it looks back over the city of Sydney. If you look very closely you can see a tiny Centrepoint Tower and to the right of that a very very tiny Sydney Habour Bridge. Some little pinpoints of white in the centre are actually the sails of sailing boats on the sparkling harbour….. so tiny that the have been reduced to mere pinpricks of light. Sydney is such a big city and forgive the bais towards a city I love but it’s also an extremely beautiful place physically. Such a stunning harbour and such a temperate climate make it visual treat in many many ways. The coastline is rugged and ragged and jawdroppingly lovely. But as with all big metropolis’s it has a dark understory. And it is this aspect of the beauty of this place that I am seeking to convey here…. the darkness that surrounds the light and makes it complete.
So I know there’s gotta be other people out there excited about the release of the new Batman Movie The Dark Knight, or is it just me? This is a tribute to possibly one of my favourite movies! This is also one of my first really serious attempts at creating some digital artwork in Photoshop. This is the result of me having a lot of time, sitting at home sick when I should be at work. The question is can you see Batman?? For this I started off with one of my pics of Melbourne, Australia from Southbank which was a HDR from 3 exposures. I then added in bats, flood lights, batman, the moon etc. and then once again a lot of tinkering in Lightroom to finetune :) This image has had over 5000 views Sales 1 Mounted Print 1 Poster Click here for my other images of Melbourne
this is the next in my current series of uploads. All of these IR landscapes were were shot at the old Reshes site on Lachlan street in Sydney some years back when it was being demolished. I took quite a lot of photo’s of the site over a period of time but waited till the sky was just so to use the infrared film…... it just seems to bring out all the latent drama trapped within the mundane….
the next in the series of IR inner city landscapes I’m uploading at the moment. All of these images were shot some years ago when a big brewery site in the innercity was demolished to make way for a new housing estate. The ruins were quietly spectacular and I had a wonderful time photographing the demolishon over a period of time. This particular image has come about due to a bit of lens flare caused by having the sun in front of the camera. I wanted that dramatic overcast sky behind the building and just as I shot it the sun came out and blasted me. It’s a pretty basic mistake but I love it. It’s these sorts of mistakes that make photography so magical to me.
somewhat delayed but still here at last is the next image in my Landscape for Orson Wells series….. all of these images are taken with Kodak Highspeed B/W Infrared film some years ago when the old Reshes Brewery site in Sydney was being demolished to make way for a huge new housing project. The clearing and preparation of the site took some months I was able to wait for a nice sky before shooting the IR film…...
the next in my latest series of IR urban landscapes. All these images were shot with Kodak HIgh Speed Infrared B/W film at the site of a very big demolishion. I love the way the jagged edges of this half destroyed building intersect with the whispy radience of the sky…..
Photo was taken on a railway station in Budapest 14th district.

Different? My depiction of the mind of someone in personal struggle with society. The light and the dark, happy and sad, known and unknown. All of this moving with random thought processes, pop culture, gossip, media influence, culture clashes and a lot of the time, white noise to fill whatever silence is left. This is modern society. Confusing, confronting, intimidating and at times down right scary. Which way do we go? Title of this piece I have borrowed from one of my favourite songs: “..can I please have some silence. How about some space..“ / Mindcircus – Way Out West. City Of Melbourne Musuem. Not the one in Carlton, housing dinosaur bones and relics though. This is the nondescript one on Spring Street, in the old Treasury Building. It showcases the history of Melbourne as a city, from colonisation to today. This was taken in the vaults, underground. Which have been turned into an interactive journey through the gold rush days. This particular room had only a tv and light in it, both of modern look. The contrast grabbed my attention straight away. It had a spooky yet familiar effect on me. I didn’t know what to make of it, but I kept looking at it, unsure what to think or feel. Slight crop of original photo. Desaturated all and selectively coloured tv screen. Increased contrasted and brightness to achieve higher levels of mood. Venice, Italy. I intentionally did not correct the perspective in this shot. I found out I like it better like this :) Textures courtesy of Jerry Jones aka ghostbones and Telzey
Here I experimented with tonal values of the photo, and ended up with a radical result.
Photo was taken in Regina, Saskatchewan / I was trying to give the image a moody feel, applied texture, using filter forge plugin / Best Viewed Large!
