    Hiya peeps, I know this is short notice but I’ve got a hole in my schedule and have decided to use the time to head into the city before the birds wake up for a bit of a wander and to watch the city wake up. If you’re interested in joining me (and who ever else decides to show up on the day) then I’ll be at Federation Square at 5.30am on SATURDAY!!. You’re welcome to come along with or without a camera… if you’re a model then you are also welcome to come along! The more the merrier. It’s going to be very relaxed so fun should yeld some great results.

    I have many cityscapes in my portfolio but most of them try to portray a beautiful interplay of light bathing buildings, rivers, pavements rather than going for a raw urban feel. I chose this image because it is as close as any in my portfolio to portraying the viscera of a city, the atmosphere people are simultaneously drawn to and slightly repulsed by.

    Thought I’d get a bit wet and go into the heart of the city for a walk. Shots taken with a D mk3 and 70-200 f/2.8IS – blessed are those with rain proof gear. ( images are linked to larger versions for those with bandwidth issues ) 1. / 2. / 3. / 4. / 5. / 6. / 7. / 8. / 9. / / . / Tips for shooting in the rain: I’ve found that with an extra large large rain jacket i can sling my camera underneath and keep it dry as i walk around in the rain put your camera over your shoulder and then put your rain jacket over the top be careful of non weather proof camera gear – use it under shelter when you can and don’t risk trying to take it out in the rain when shooting wet tarmac or dark paving make sure you use a bit of exposure compensation (i suggest -2/3 of a stop ) don’t try to use an umbrella when shooting – you’ll need an extra hand and you can see what can happen from the above images if your camera bag isn’t waterproof then cut a plastic bag up to help to keep out most of the water dry out your bag and gear thoroughly when you get home – the foam protection in the bag will take a lot of drying

    Walking past the chessboard in the centre of Melbourne I was taken by the battles that were being fought. The ringmaster was in evidence dancing around, quoting the rules, knowing the best ways to spring from a piece to tap the clock, he always made the opponent think they had the upper hand but at the last minute he’d click the clock over indicating that there five minute thought resulted in a forfeit.

    Last weekend Melbourne held an Open House Day, where they open up a lot of buildings to the public that you may not usually get to see inside. Well John Conway and myself set off with a list of must see buildings, and a few others that were in the same areas ….. what we found were queues, and more queues, very long queues…. So a change of plans….After walking up a few of the graffiti lanes (always worth a look on a trip to Melbourne), we stopped in at 101 Collins Street (which wasn’t on our list, but was the first one we came across) then wandered into the Melbourne Town Hall (no queues) and we ended up walking up to the Shrine, dropping in at Flinders Street Station, Hamer Hall and the Arts Centre along the way. / / 1 / / / 2 / / / 3 / / / 4 / / / 5 / / / 6 / / / 7 / / / 8 / / / 9 / / / 10 / / / 11 / / / 12 / / / 13 / 14 / / / 15 / / / 16 / 17 / / / 18 / / / 19 / / / 20 /

    A few months ago I entered 5 of my pieces into the 09 Hope Art Exhibition. Until tonight, I had entirely forgotten about it. I received an email, to my absolute shock, informing me that 4 of the 5 pieces had been accepted! I’m literally pumping with adrenaline at the moment, sleep is out of the question now LOL! The exhibition is run by Imagine Arts, an organisation dedicated to the emerging local artists. My 4 pieces, along with others by 20 or so local artists, will be on display from: 17th October 2002 – 25th October 2009, at / Andrianakis Gallery / 274 Fitzroy Street / Fitzroy, VIC / Australia The 4 pieces that have been selected are: Banding / Glasshouse City / Caramel Ocean / World Forgotten / If anyone’s in the Fitzroy area on the 17th Oct, feel free to swing on past for a gander at some of the local work! Would be nice to meet some bubblers too! Cheers! Andrew
