  • A funny thing happened on the way to Mt. Rainier well before sunrise. I noticed the morning mist rising over Clear Lake and the cirrus clouds fanning out above them and decided that a glorious sunrise on the lake was worth more than a maybe on the mountain. I fumbled my way in the dark via flashlight to the lakes edge and had time to search for composition before the heavens lit up. Not a bad way to start a day at all.

  • As an astronomer of many decades, I’m always interested in the Moon. There was even a time, in my late teens, when I seemed to keep track of time by successive lunations – “3 moons, since such-and-such happened”. It’s so easy to be blase about this great orb that wanders periodically across our sky; it’s just part of normal life, a small, vaguely patterned disk that accompanies us – if we care to let it. It’s good then, every now and then, to pause for a moment and take a longer look at our celestial companion. It appears just like a small flat disk, but look at it again, really look, and now see it as it is – a round satellite, a quarter of a million miles away, lit by the same Sun that shines on us. Look at its shadowed side, and then imagine the Sun, off to the other side, giving it shape and form. Then do that as it passes through its phases… crescent, half, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, crescent and back to New Moon. Now you start to appreciate its true form – a rocky sphere, 2,160 miles across, revolving eternally around us. ..................................................................................................................... • The calm sea, lightly sprinkled with bergy bits. reflects some high cirrus clouds. The presence of the clouds indicates that the quiet will soon be disrupted by a storm. This picture was taken in a location just below the Antarctic Circle, south east of Macquarie Island.
