  • A piece of artwork lining the walk of the Cinque Terre.

  • The colours of the buildings in this area of Italy scream out for attention and seem to jostle with the sky itself. In saturating them, I was hoping to capture this playfulness and also the beauty that exists in the shabby-ness.

  • / . / _Photo taken from a ferry off the Cinque Terre in Italy. Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Please view large photo to appreciate panorama fully

  • This photo was taken during my European vacation in 1998. Monterosso is one of the five towns in Liguria Italy that make up the ‘Cinque Terre’. The Cinque Terre are five coastal villages in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of Italy. They have come to be among the most popular areas of Italy among tourists. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all encapsulated in a national park by the same name. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. / . / This photograph is my personal favourite from my 1998 holiday. / . / This photograph was scanned from a colour negative (big thank you to my brother for letting use his scanner). The photo was was taken using a Nikon F-301 and a 24-120 mm Nikkor Zoom Lens

  • Dusk overlooking Vernazza, one of the 5 towns that make up the Cinque Terre in Italy. A picture postcard spot and certainly one of those times and places that make me so glad I am starting to take photography more seriously. Shot taken in March 2008.

  • Looking down of the village of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre, Italy /

  • Vernazza is one of the five tiny villages nestled on top of the rugged cliffs that line the Ligurian coastline forming The Cinque Terre. The walking trail meanders through the villages and around the local houses, the precariously placed vegetable gardens and vinyards planted on steep gradients and down to the stoney beaches to meet the crashing waves hurtling polished stones with every surge. The quaintness of this fishing village certainly took my breath away and the hospitable nature of the locals will certainly ensure my return one day.

  • Riomaggiore (Rimasùu in the local language) is a village and a commune in the province of La Spezia, situated in a small valley in the Liguria region of Italy. It is the first of the Cinque Terre one meets coming from La Spezia. The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town’s vineyards. Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses. Riomaggiore has one or two roads where people socialise, but most of the life at night can be found at the Bar Centrale. Besides Bar Centrale, finding English-speakers in this small town can be hard. There are a few spots where you’ll find service in English—Il Corsaro Rosso Kayak and Snorkeling Rentals right in the harbour has a Canadian staff member who speaks English and can give visitors any information of the area they need. The Via dell’Amore is a path connecting Riomaggiore to its frazione Manarola, also part of the Cinque Terre. Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre, all connected by trail. The water and mountainside have been declared national parks.

  • Scanning old negatives from my archive, I have found a photograph of Cinque Torri (Five Towers) and Tofanas taken very late in the afternoon. I liked the combination of dark clouds and remaining summer haze that made the background looking very flat like in a painting. Just before clouds covered the sun completely, last rays fell on the Cinque Torri, a group of rocks very popular by climbers. To complete the feeling I had about the picture, I’ve applied ‘colored pencils’ filter in post-processing of this photograph. Dolomiti, Italy. August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, sharpening, colored pencils, color enhancement, blend modes. Detail of the image showing the ‘color pencils’ effect:

  • Five pears… / I did a painting of a bowl of pears that I’ve been wanting to upload, but my scanner is on the fritz….. / So I decided that I’d shoot some pears instead. / I’ll add the painting eventually…... As for the language…. I believe pera to be the italian singular of pear, the plural being pere..... I’m probably wrong.

  • Five Lands (Italy) shots

  • Le Cinque Terre in Liguria, Italy is outstandingly beautiful but truely spectacular as the sun sets below the horizon. The residents of the five villages go about their daily lives as swarms of tourists trek the meandering pathway along the coastline. To escape the crowds and experience the tranquil sounds of this natural environment, there are plenty of other trails beyond the villages and further inland, and they all seem to offer breathtaking vistas.

  • Cinque Terre meaning “The Five Lands” is a portion of the coast along the Italian Riviera. This shot was taken in Riomaggiore one of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre.
