The warden’s call in the eleventh hour. / And it’s easy to say but it’s hard to remember / That praise is for suckers and death is forever. / Under your nose but just over your head. / Martyr meets maker in ten shades of red. / These are your twelve steps. / Take them on your knees. / Show them at the door and they’ll let you in free.
This one of our local Churcches, taken on a damp dark day, sort of the right day for churches and grave yards. Almost desaturated it to darken the feel.
Port Arthur. A place with a history of violence both recent and centuries past. Why should it be then that I feel so at home here? Countless restless souls both innocent and guilty surely prowl the grounds and should create a miasma of misery that is palpable and yet… whenever I step inside the walls of this old church I feel an overwhelming sense of peace permeate my very soul. Welcome to my sanctuary. Best viewed large
Light painting outside a church in Brisbane, Queensland Australia. / 2 min exposure at f22
A little experiment with lighting. This photograph was taken in the side isle of the gigantic collegiate church of St Waudru. Although located in the middle of the former county of Hainaut, the style in which it is built is one of the finest examples of Brabantine gothic. Eventhough its construction time was incredibly long (from 1450 untill 1686 CE, and it was in fact never finished), the style of the building is quite uniform. It is by many considered the most beautiful medieval buildings in Belgium. I disagree, but i think it’s definately impressive.
An old lantern next to the entrance to the Virgin Mary Visitation church in Hejnice, Jizera mountains, Czech Republic. I feel that giving light is very symbolic for this place where the pilgrimage roads from several countries cross since the 13th century… February 2002. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, blend-modes, color correction, watercolor.
Thanks for viewing. Few people there are who have not turned to prayer at some point in their lives. Many find hope and answers; others become bitter. The lighting on this was very complex. Hope you enjoy it. Rob
I stand, I stare / I wonder, where? I pray, I breathe / to stay, or leave? I live, I lie / I wonder, why? I love, I pain / I feel the same. I give, I get / and yet, and yet? Shot on Werneth Low, Hyde. Overlooking Manchester City Centre
1 Thessalonians 4:16 / For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: / Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / Canon 400d / /
Sunrise over Fes, Morocco. Adhan (Athaan) is the Islamic call to prayer, recited by the muezzin. The root of the word is ʼḏn “to permit”, and another derivative of this word is uḏun, meaning “ear.” This is the minaret of Kairouyine mosque in Fes. The university which is attached, was founded in 859AD and ‘is considered the oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.’ (Care of Wikipedia) / Adhan I

The world may be decending into a new dark age but St Mary of the Angels stands like a castle against it. It’s protective spire looks over all of Geelong like the lance of a great knight. See also Larger size available on request.

The title is a play on words where, depending on your view of the ‘church’, it can mean different things. Image at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo, taken with 2MP Motorazr V9 mobile phone camera. Edited in Photoshop CS4. Group Feature: / ‘That One Great Shot’ – May 2009
The time of transition for wiccan’s and believers of the old faith to submit and merge with the Roman Catholic Church. A good image based on the Salem witch trials and their personal stories. In Remembrance of all the men and women who were persecuted and executed during the hysteria of the Salem Witch trials. Here are some to name a few: Bridget Bishop / John Proctor / George Burroughs / Alice Parker / Ann Pudeator / Sarah Wildes / Wilmott Redd / John Willard / Margaret Scott / Martha Corey / Samuel Wardwell / Martha Carrier / Mary Easty / Rebecca Nurse / Sarah Good / George Jacobs, Sr. / Elizabeth Howe / Susannah Martin The Salem witch hunt began in January of 1692.The first two “afflicted” persons were Parris’ daughter and neice, nine-year-old Elizabeth “Betty” Parris and eleven-year-old Abigail Williams. After days of displaying characteristics of aberrant behavior including claims of sharp pain, paralyzation, choking, crawling under furniture, staring-into-space, making non-sensical noises and crying out, they were prayed over by Reverend Parris and several local ministers. When this failed to cure them, the local physician, Dr. William Griggs was called in to examine the girls. His diagnosis was that their malady was of a spiritual nature. They were under the “evil hand” of witchcraft. Ultimately the group of “afflicted” would grow to include many more children. All of these would claim to be “tortured, wasted, pined and consumed” by the spells and invisible specters of local residents who were witches. Altogether, the “afflicted children” would accuse over two hundred individuals, most of whom would escape prosecution. Nearly fifty would save their lives by confessing to the crime of witchcraft, and begging the community’s forgiveness.(This group would be asked to turn “state’s evidence” and help the court ferret out more suspects.) Twenty would lose their lives through the actions of Salem’s Court of Oyer and Terminer, nineteen by hanging and one (Giles Corey) by the torture of pressing. There was a movie created called THE CRUICIBLE that depicts the salem witch trials. When the moon is full and the hour is late .. beware .. it is not wise to go to the old ruined church .. for that is when the ghosts come out .. the lady Anna weeps and moans .. for she was cruelly mudered by her lover and is now buried deep in the earth .. a lost soul .. Her evil lover spys on her .. as he too lays benearth the ground .. for he was hung by the neck till he was dead for his evil deed …
I think every Australian knows of Port Arthur, for dark events that happened here, both in the recent past, and early days of Australia. A correctional facility for the re-offending criminals from Britain and Ireland, this was more than just a jail. It was about changing these men to rejoin society. It was used from 1833 until the 1877 when it was closed down. This was the main church, and it was one of Australia’s first non-denominational churches. Built using convict labour, in the gothic style. The bird in the shot is a crow. I did try to get one of the many rosellas in the area in the shot, but no luck there. Canon 50D, 10mm. ~ Rooftop of the Church of England Cathedral, North Adelaide, Adelaide, Sth Australia. This photograph was taken at dusk, sunset, the western sunlight is what gives the golden/yellow colour to the steeples (spires?) ... the clouds were just perfect for setting the building off. I was about 800 metres away (nearly a kilometre) taken from across a park/river (Festival Theatre platform, Adelaide, for those who know the location/area.) ~ I used this photograph as the background to this image, a while back… As a Laminated Print…
Sacre Coeur, Paris. The amazingly original basilica is located in Montmartre, leading to the highest point of Paris city. First constructed in 1875, it was not completed until 1914, due to a problematic law system that almost stopped construction entirely. Only saved by a loophole, construction finally continued to the end. I didn’t get to spend as much time here as I would normally like to, but the climb to the top of the tower was worth it for the incredible view of the city below. Original shot layered twice, with 3 textures, colour altering of each layer, blending of layers, further colour altering and an omni light effect. Notre Dame, Paris, captial city of France. The last in my Notre Dame series. I created six versions of this shot, trying different textures, colours and layers, but this was the first one that moved toward a theme or emotion that I wanted. It feels quite lonely and stripped of hope to me, but I’m sure it will have varied meaning to the individual. 8 layers of texture from www.deviantart.com free use stock – Amurrr. Lightened each layer, adjusted hue and colour levels, blended each with 3 layers of the photo, one b&w, one colour and one desaturated. Flattened image and further colour tweaking and adjusting.
