I have always loved ruined and bare country chapels where the outside elements seem to be brought in through the windows and shafts of light. To me, the deep greenwood and forests are nature’s chapels,which can bring you closer to the divine than any grand,gold guilded cathedreal. For me there is no seperation between the divine and the natural world around us…..and I have found peace and harmony many times amongst the sacred Celtic springs and ancient trees in forgotten corners of this country. This image was particularly inspired by the small holy wells of South West Cornwall, where even to this day poeple leave offerings and gifts to the water elements and the old Gods.

My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. Her litter mates ran around when the camera aimed at them but she stood in attention every time a photo opportunity showed up! :) I’m sure she’d be glad that I donate the proceed of the sale of her photos to Nature Canada as she loves woods and her deer friends as much as I do! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.

A new church being built in Drobeta Turnu Severin, Mehedinti, Romania. / It was a surprise to see construction ongoing as it had stood as a concrete shell for the past decade. / The wooden scaffolding is a work of art in itself! / (Spot the worker with the yellow helmet on the roof – health and safety and risk assessment have yet to reach the eastern end of the EC!). / October 2008.

View from inside the Cocathedral St-Antoine-de-Padoue in Longueuil, Quebec built between 1884 and 1887. / This beautiful construction of gothic inspiration has been designed by two architects, Albert Mesnard and Henri-Maurice Perrault. There are two asymmetrical towers in front, a very rare occurrence in Canada, although there are a few in France. Stairway to Heaven was featured in Historic Churches on November 7, 2008.

Back in the deep summer, when all were in blossom and the leaves were rich in color and taste, the doe had plenty of time to experience the “other things” in life than just search for food. One day she decided to figure out what creature it was that I carried around with me and pushed at the top of the “head” from time to time to make a sound. She came so close to the lens that I had to quickly change to a wide-angle one in order to take this photo. Right after that instant, she took another step further to “pat” my “pet” with her tongue! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Algonquin Park

Missionary Baptist Church, / Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, USA – / interior shot with lovely bay window opening up to a view of the forest. This church was formed in 1839 by ex-members of the Primitive Baptist Church. The church split and 40 of its members left because they favored Missionary work, an issue that divided Baptists everywhere. At one time 114 members were enrolled here. This church, built in 1894 on Hyatt Hill, was moved to its present location in 1916. This is a painting by my friend, Maria Hawthorne. / Maria has been painting occcaisionally since childhood, but has not painted for many years. It was painted at my suggestion, from the book of old sailing ship photos, which I am currently working from. A drifter and topsail schooner, lie in the mud in old Whitby. / The ruins of the priory are on the distant hill Watercolour 12”x8”.

Rice Church was built around 1910 and was originally a Primitive Baptist Church. Rice Church, now relocated to the city park and used for weddings and singings, is an old country church originally located about 5 miles outside the city limits. / /

This is a photo taken just before dawn in the woods of Mont Laurier, just before one reaches Val D’or, where one drives in the nearby Canadian national park for hours with only nature and wildlife. It’s a winter morning at about 5:30am and the camera is pointed away from where the sun was to come up.
