  • The “Painted Church” at Dubina. Fayette County, Texas, is home to four Czech-built Catholic churches, all founded in the mid ninteenth century. While fairly nondescript on the outside, the interiors of these churches feature heavily painted walls, decorated ceilings and ornate altarpieces. The whole effect is like so many easter eggs. Unfortunately, my flash card wasn’t working (unbeknownst to me at the time) for the first two churches. ARGH!

  • Took this at a chapel in Middletown, CT

  • This tiny little church is at the summit of the Falzarego Pass near Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites of northern Italy. The design of the church seems to mimic the shape of peak of Sass di Stria in the background. To the far left are the permanently snowy peaks of the Marmolada massif.

  • I’m not a religious man, but there is no denying the effect that a building of this magnitude can have on you… Given the right place, the right time and the right company, silence can speak volumes… Did you know that just like all those annoying new ring tones that you hear on mobile phones, the church organ is also a Polyphonic instrument. Each set of pipes being played simultaneously with others, the sound gets truly mixed and interspersed only when it reaches the environment it is in and not in the instrument itself. Just a little bit of trivia for you…

  • So maybe it hasn’t been quite this cold lately, but still it’s been bloody cold in Melbourne! This is an edit of the Chapel at Monsalvat in Eltham, Victoria, Australia. Used a filter in Photoshop to achieve the red coloured bushes and also added the snow using another plug-in. Montsalvat consists of a series of unique and distinctive buildings in the European style set in over 12 acres of parkland. A lot of materials came from the many beautiful buildings of Melbourne that were being demolished to make way for modernization. The addition of mud bricks, rammed earth, the local mud stone , bush timbers, and a great deal of hard labour, Justus Jörgensen’s vision took form. My other photo of Monsalvat here Click here for my other images of Victoria

  • Sunrise over Fes, Morocco. Adhan (Athaan) is the Islamic call to prayer, recited by the muezzin. The root of the word is ʼḏn “to permit”, and another derivative of this word is uḏun, meaning “ear.” This is the minaret of Kairouyine mosque in Fes. The university which is attached, was founded in 859AD and ‘is considered the oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.’ (Care of Wikipedia) / Adhan II

  • The play of light in religious places, be it of stone and glass or trees and open skies, has a deep effect on the human spirit. / The candles hold the promise of light against the dark of night. Shot in Holy Trinity church in York

  • St. John’s Chapel is the “most elegant and best preserved Anglo-Norman church interiors in existence” / This is inside the “White Tower” inside the Tower of London, and was built sometime between 1066 and 1087. / This is quite a long exposure image to bring out the detail.

  • Click on the photo, to see it really LARGE. White Paint was invented on Mykonos wasn’t it? Not sure… / Anyway, there sure is plenty of it there – blue paint too, by the way. / / One of Mykonos’s many little white churches, with its own special splash-of-red, as a passer-by agreed to brighten up my shot. /

  • never before I saw a church being built… you can find one in Stoupa ( Peloponese, Greece ), and witness the process for the next few years. The lack of decorations, in the present state of construction, is breathtakingly beautiful, I find… / I beautified my capture in a minimal way.

  • Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens / CANADA / Behind L’Annonciation church in Oka,Quebec (built in 1761) is a private inlet with a small peninsula that juts out into the Lake of Two Mountains. This point of land belongs to the presbytery and serves as a place of contemplation for them. As you can see on the far right there is a gazebo and a statue of Jesus. And on the left of those two structures you can just barely make out a large wrought iron cross that soars into the clouds. My favourite b & w image to date, for the Top Favourite Group.
