  • Church in Avranches, Normandy, France. Picture taken with Sony R1 which is ideal if you forgot your tripod. The camera can be placed on the ground in an angle and the top mounted LCD allows you to check the composition. Can’t beat that with a DSLR. Avranches is situated at the southern end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the E40 road connecting Saint-Lô with Brittany and on the rail line between Lison (linking to Caen) and Dol (linking to Rennes). The town was founded on high ground overlooking the dunes and coastal marshes along the bay forming the corner between the peninsulas of the Cotentin and Brittany. From Avranches, it is possible to see the Mont Saint Michel, which was founded by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. A museum houses the collection of manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel, deposited in the municipal archives during the French Revolution. It is one of the largest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in France, outside national and university libraries. Formerly dominated by the cathedral, where Henry II did penance, an open grassed area La Plate-Forme overlooking the bay towards Mont Saint Michel displays only a few remnants of the destroyed building. The major church Notre Dame des Champs was constructed in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century to restore the religious life of the town after the destruction of the cathedral. A smaller church Saint Gervais houses a treasury, best known for the purported skull of Saint Aubert complete with hole where the archangel Michael’s finger pierced it (probably a prehistoric trepanned skull). The botanical gardens were founded in the grounds of the former Franciscan convent in the late 18th century. The expansion and introduction of exotic species in the 19th century and the location of the gardens overlooking the bay made the gardens an important sight in the town. / / / / Have a look at my other photos. The minster is one of the most interesting and beautiful buildings I have ever been to. Southwell Minster dates back to the 12th century. It was once the retreat of the Archbishop of York. During the English Civil War, it was believed to be used as a stables for Cromwell. Southwell only became a diocese in the the late 19th Century. The windows are so beautiful in the Minster, and on this occasion the light came streaming through turning these ancient pillars into beautiful pallets of colour. “You are the light of the world…..let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16. This was the scripture being read out in the minster the day I visted this extraordinary church and took this picture. I am very familiar with this beautiful building, with its strong columns, ancient carvings, and warm smiles. As I walked around the nave, the sun began to break though the dull cloudy sky which had dominated the morning. The light began to stream through the windows as I turned and saw this amazing view. I set up my camera to get the shot, taking several pictures from different angles. God spoke to me in that moment. He gave me two distinct illustrations about what I was looking at. The first describes us as the strong pillars built by God, either as individuals or as the church, standing strong. He displays His glory and beauty on us, in us, and through us. The second illustration describes us as the window, with each colourful piece of glass representing the different gifts given to us, again either as individuals or as the church, but it is the Son shining through us that shows God to the world. What a thought. We are working in partnership with Him. HP PhotoSmart C945 (Bridge camera) / f/2.8 / 1/6000 / ISO 200

  • When I first went to Mass at St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez, Mississippi, many years ago, I offered a prayer at the altar for my two adult children and burned a candle for their intentions. Then, when I looked up at the stained glass windows and inspected them more closely than my first casual glance, I was amazed to discover that the windows below the candle racks on the left and the right side of the church depicted St. Catherine and St. Thomas. My children’s names are Catherine and Thomas. Ever since then, St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez holds a special place in my heart. I had to go back there this weekend (about a three hour drive from my home) to revisit this venerable old friend of mine!

  • Lincoln Cathedral (in full The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, or sometimes St. Mary’s Cathedral) is a historic Anglican cathedral in Lincoln in England and seat of the Diocese of Lincoln in the Church of England. It was reputedly the tallest building in the world for nearly a quarter of a millennium (1300–1549), though this height has been questioned.[1] The central spire collapsed in 1549 and was not rebuilt. It is highly regarded by architectural scholars; the eminent Victorian writer John Ruskin declared, “I have always held… that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.” Canon 5DMK2 / F16 / ISO 100 / 24mm / HDR / Handheld / 1 Raw File Split Into 3 / Tonemapped in Photomatix
