  • Landscape of the Lord St. Malo outside of Estes Park, Colorado. One of thee most photographed Churches in all of North America, I was VERY excited and VERY anxious to get this shot when I headed up to Rocky Mountain National Park. I was hoping that the weather would clear because behind this, covered in the clouds, is Mt. Meeker and it is just a stunning view with the mountains! I have to admit though, I am really happy how this came out. And if anything, it is quite unique compared to how it is usually shot. I suppose that is a good thing when it comes to photographing something that is such an icon. Generally, people walk down by the pond and shoot from there, I stayed up top on the side of the road, thus giving a different perspective than most. Also, the weather. It was dramatic as all heck! You could smell the rain as it came in, dark, but with so much drama in the sky. I was pretty lucky to get a shot like this. Ya, I am happy with it! • Poppies are a symbol for remembrance. We remember those who have given their lives on behalf of others, especially in conflict. These were in the parish church at Burnsall, in the Yorkshire Dales. My wife’s family has a connection with the church and we were visiting in remembrance of her grandfather who had been Church Warden there at the end of WWII. The church was very peaceful and this scene caught my eye. If you are ever in the area it is well worth a visit as it has a small museum nside with artefacts found locally showing the early life of the first settlers in the area, going back to pre-historic times and also covering the early Christian history. St. Wilfrid preached on the banks of the Wharfe over 1300 years ago and a wooden church was soon established on the site of the present building. Worship has continued to this day and St. Wilfrid’s is now a thriving church which has regular Sunday worship based manly on the traditional service and also family worship. The church houses a very important collection of ancient stones. Thanks to a lot of hard work and funding from various bodies, these stones are now part of a fantastic display “Vikings in Burnsall”. This display can be visited at any time during the day. Amongst the stones are various crosses and hog backed tombs. There are guides (in different languages) and an audio guide will be available from May 10th 2005. Also of interest is the 15th Century alabaster panel which is on display in the Lady Chapel. It depicts the Adoration of the Magi and is of great historical value and interest. Built: 700 / Architect: St Wilfrid (?)

  • St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe Sitting in the center of the town square in Santa Fe, New Mexico stands the St. Francis of Assisi Church. Built between the years of 1869-1886, it sits on an earlier site of a church built in 1626. This was a REALLY hard shotto pull off as the town center square is filled with people so I had to act quickly. I fired off 3 brackets handheld for the HDR and metered at the bricks on teh church…hoping this was going to work….I think it did. Thoughts most welcomed! / —John http://www.redbubble.com/products/configure/2720872

  • I have always loved ruined and bare country chapels where the outside elements seem to be brought in through the windows and shafts of light. To me, the deep greenwood and forests are nature’s chapels, which can bring you closer to the divine than any grand, gold guilded cathedreal. For me there is no seperation between the divine and the natural world around us…..and I have found peace and harmony many times amongst the sacred Celtic springs and ancient trees in forgotten corners of this country. This image was particularly inspired by the small holy wells of South West Cornwall, where even to this day poeple leave offerings and gifts to the water elements and the old Gods.

  • The lake of Bohinj again. Is for sure one of the most amazing natural places in my country and the one I personaly love most. The lake is typicaly glacial with a depth of 40m and the valey in the form of letter “U”. The church on the end of the lake where the river Sava bohinjka goes out from the lake is there from centuries and even before christians this was a spiritual place. There are many legends about this place, the goldenhorn mitological being who protect the nature here around is maybe the most remarkable simbol of this place. The valey is also dominated by the highest mountain in Slovenija Triglav which is also a national symbol. wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohinj This are 3 HDR images from three exposures merged together © COPYRIGHT NOTICE / The work contained in my gallery is copyrighted ©2008 Robert Pavsic. • To me religion shoulden’t be about big, showey buildings and being preached too.I prefer a more natural approach ””The Kingdom of Heaven is inside you and all around you Split a piece of wood, and I am there Lift a stone and there you will find me” (interior shot at St,Conan’s Kirk on the shores of Loch Awe, Scotland)

  • By far the most famous fictional ghost ship is The Flying Dutchman. The ship has become synonymous with the phenomenon so that “Flying Dutchman” is often used as a generic term for any apparition-type ghost ship. The term may also refer to a real ship that was reported to be seen – often as an apparition – after sinking, or to a ship found floating with no crewmembers on board. According to folklore, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never go home, but must sail “the seven seas” forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. If she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land, to people long since dead. / Versions of the story are numerous. According to some, the story is originally Dutch, while others claim it is based on the English play The Flying Dutchman (1826) by Edward Fitzball and the novel The Phantom Ship (1837) by Frederick Marryat, later adapted into the Dutch story Het Vliegend Schip (The Flying Ship) by the Dutch clergyman A.H.C. Römer. Other versions include the opera by Richard Wagner (1841) and The Flying Dutchman on Tappan Sea by Washington Irving (1855).

  • View from inside the Cocathedral St-Antoine-de-Padoue in Longueuil, Quebec built between 1884 and 1887. / This beautiful construction of gothic inspiration has been designed by two architects, Albert Mesnard and Henri-Maurice Perrault. There are two asymmetrical towers in front, a very rare occurrence in Canada, although there are a few in France. • One of my favorite places to visit in the beautiful Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina is this grove of trees we call the “Cathedral.” The first time we found it, my husband and I realized we were whispering as if we had entered a church. There is something magical about this place. The silence is total and it seems to welcome us each time we visit. Whenever anyone asks us which church we attend, we glance at each other and tell them “The cathedral in the forest.” Even though the trees were planted by man, there is a sense of a special energy in the center of the grove.

  • This is a composite of three photos, one of St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, Louisiana, one of a rosy sky taken in the Hidden Hills community near my home, and one of branches overhanging the LSU lakes in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The branches compose the background layer, with the rosy sky layered in through the Select and Paste method and then the church was selected from the third image using the Quick Selection tool, copied and finally pasted onto the background image. The use of the sliders in the Layers palette helped determine opacity of the overlays. To accentuate the branches I chose the Darken option in the layers palette which helped to really frame the picture. These are all just experimentations. I’m new at merging photos and working with layers, so please bear with me as I try to learn how to do this. Sure is lots of fun trying, though. (The state of Louisiana, unlike the other 49 states, is divided into parishes, not counties, an influence of the Catholic culture in the area. I live in St. Landry Parish; St. Landry Church is located in Opelousas which is the seat of the parish government).

  • Sometimes, just some of us, may have to take stock of our situation, pause and wonder if we’ve made the correct choices, knowing full well, that we shall have to abide in those choices we make. One of those times is often (for many) when we’re nearing “death’s door” or “heaven’s gate”. I for one have done so, more than once, in this lifetime… [and tonight the chill of lonely clings close again] ~ Background image of church; a photograph of the Cathedral steeples, Adelaide, Sth Australia

  • At the most literal, Alleluia means “All hail to Him Who is.” This is a colour photograph taken inside the St. John’s Episcopal Church near Kula on Maui Hallelujah (הללויה) is a Hebrew word meaning “praise Yahweh”. It is an exclamation used chiefly in songs of praise or thanksgiving to God, and as an expression of gratitude or adoration.
