the world’s largest triumphal arch, forms the backdrop for an impressive urban ensemble in Paris. / The monument surmounts the hill of Chaillot at the center of a star-shaped configuration of 12 radiating avenues. The view from top of the Champs Elysées you can see the smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in the Tuileries gardens, and from the Obélisque de Luxor in the place de la Concorde. Church in Avranches, Normandy, France. Picture taken with Sony R1 which is ideal if you forgot your tripod. The camera can be placed on the ground in an angle and the top mounted LCD allows you to check the composition. Can’t beat with a DSLR. Avranches is situated at the southern end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the E40 road connecting Saint-Lô with Brittany and on the rail line between Lison (linking to Caen) and Dol (linking to Rennes). The town was founded on high ground overlooking the dunes and coastal marshes along the bay forming the corner between the peninsulas of the Cotentin and Brittany. From Avranches, it is possible to see the Mont Saint Michel, which was founded by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. A museum houses the collection of manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel, deposited in the municipal archives during the French Revolution. It is one of the largest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in France, outside national and university libraries. Formerly dominated by the cathedral, where Henry II did penance, an open grassed area La Plate-Forme overlooking the bay towards Mont Saint Michel displays only a few remnants of the destroyed building. The major church Notre Dame des Champs was constructed in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century to restore the religious life of the town after the destruction of the cathedral. A smaller church Saint Gervais houses a treasury, best known for the purported skull of Saint Aubert complete with hole where the archangel Michael’s finger pierced it (probably a prehistoric trepanned skull). The botanical gardens were founded in the grounds of the former Franciscan convent in the late 18th century. The expansion and introduction of exotic species in the 19th century and the location of the gardens overlooking the bay made the gardens an important sight in the town. / / / / Have a look at my other photos. Since Windows and Doors is having a Stained Glass challenge, I decided to have a play with this image from my Trip in April. I have always liked the soft reflection on the Gold gilt side wall. I was thought it would be interesting to try the Amazing Orton Effect to see how that adds to the light filter. The effect actually enhanced the colours quite well so this is the final result.

Notre Dame de la Victoire de Lépante in Saint-Raphaël on the French Riviera. The building of the church Notre Dame de la Victoire de Lépante has a lot to do with the growth of Saint-Raphaël in the 19th century. In fact, at that time, Saint-Raphaël was developing and becoming a real seaside resort. The old church, San Rafeù was getting too cramped to accommodate the newcomers. The church was built in a Roman Byzantine style. The dome was inspired by Sainte-Sophie in Istanbul. The church façade shows the Archangle Raphaël, symbol of the commune. For the most part it is built in pink sandstone from the Estérel and covers an area of 850 m2 and is 35 m high. Inaugurated in 1887, the church owes its name to a famous sea battle won by Christian forces against the Turkish (Ottoman) fleet on 5th October, 1571. The Church Notre Dame de la Victoire de Lépante was elevated to the rank of Basilica by the Vatican in February 2004.
