Church in Avranches, Normandy, France. Picture taken with Sony R1 which is ideal if you forgot your tripod. The camera can be placed on the ground in an angle and the top mounted LCD allows you to check the composition. Can’t beat that with a DSLR. Avranches is situated at the southern end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the E40 road connecting Saint-Lô with Brittany and on the rail line between Lison (linking to Caen) and Dol (linking to Rennes). The town was founded on high ground overlooking the dunes and coastal marshes along the bay forming the corner between the peninsulas of the Cotentin and Brittany. From Avranches, it is possible to see the Mont Saint Michel, which was founded by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. A museum houses the collection of manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel, deposited in the municipal archives during the French Revolution. It is one of the largest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in France, outside national and university libraries. Formerly dominated by the cathedral, where Henry II did penance, an open grassed area La Plate-Forme overlooking the bay towards Mont Saint Michel displays only a few remnants of the destroyed building. The major church Notre Dame des Champs was constructed in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century to restore the religious life of the town after the destruction of the cathedral. A smaller church Saint Gervais houses a treasury, best known for the purported skull of Saint Aubert complete with hole where the archangel Michael’s finger pierced it (probably a prehistoric trepanned skull). The botanical gardens were founded in the grounds of the former Franciscan convent in the late 18th century. The expansion and introduction of exotic species in the 19th century and the location of the gardens overlooking the bay made the gardens an important sight in the town. / / / / Have a look at my other photos. She’s quite pretty, really… / Taken in the very simple but beautiful, and greatly maintained chuch of the village of Grimaud in Provence, France. The stained glass of the church were made with the melted cockpits of planes shot during the war. The Abbey was founded in 1202 and continued in use until 1790 when it closed. It has since been recognised as ‘monument historique’ and now is a major tourist attraction in Brittany. Fuji Finepix S9500, 3 frame HDR, ISO 100, f11. Processed in Photomatix and CS3 and converted to Black and White.

Sacre Coeur, Paris. The amazingly original basilica is located in Montmartre, leading to the highest point of Paris city. First constructed in 1875, it was not completed until 1914, due to a problematic law system that almost stopped construction entirely. Only saved by a loophole, construction finally continued to the end. I didn’t get to spend as much time here as I would normally like to, but the climb to the top of the tower was worth it for the incredible view of the city below. Original shot layered twice, with 3 textures, colour altering of each layer, blending of layers, further colour altering and an omni light effect. Rocamadour was a dependency of the abbey of Tulle to the north in the Bas Limousin. The buildings of Rocamadour (from ròca, cliff, and sant Amador) rise in stages up the side of a cliff on the right bank of the Alzou, which here runs between rocky walls 400 ft. in height. Flights of steps ascend from the lower town to the churches, a group of massive buildings half-way up the cliff. The chief of them is the pilgrimage church of Notre Dame (rebuilt in its present configuration from 1479), containing the cult image at the center of the site’s draw, a wooden Black Madonna reputed to have been carved by Saint Amator (Amadour) himself. The small Benedictine community continued to reserve the use of the small twelfth-century church of Saint-Michel, above and to the side. Below, the pilgrimage church opens on to a terrace where pilgrims could assemble, called the Plateau of St Michel, where there is a broken sword said to be a fragment of Durandal, once wielded by the hero Roland. The interior walls of the church of St Sauveur are covered, with paintings and inscriptions recalling the pilgrimages of celebrated persons. The subterranean church of St Amadour (1166) extends beneath St Sauveur and contains relics of the saint. I decided to turn a few of the pics I had published (see here) into pieces for the folio. This is the rear view of Notre Dame, Paris, capital of France. This cathedral resembles a neo gothic castle from this view. I wanted to give this one a historic look, but it has taken on a more fairy tale appearance. I love it when the piece takes over and creates itself! Textures from www.deviantart.com free use stock. This is the second shot in my Notre Dame series. This time, the front of the incredibly detailed cathedral, found in Paris, capital city of France. Citadel shows the rear of the building. This is another piece that basically created itself. I wanted a black and white, textured finish, the piece had other ideas and went for something more mystical and magical. Texture used from ‘struckdumb’ free use stock, on www.deviantart.com. Layered texture seven times, altered hue and colour levels on each to be different shades and colours.
