  • An old church in Leicester st, Fitzroy that caught my eye.

  • The vaulted ceilings of Tintern Abbey in South Wales are no longer there, but the glorious skeleton remains. As you travel down Tintern Valley, when you come around the bend and spy the Abbey, it takes your breath away and you can see why Wordsworth had so much to say about it.

  • From a pair of doors at the eantrance to the Chamayo Adobe / Church. People come here to get cured. the soil in the church may be taken home – it has special healing powers in it. Along the fences, are old crutches and braces from people that were cured. There is a place inside where you can take a small amount of dirt that’s supposed to give you help in curing ailments. I took some and it did help at one point! This was shot on a Minolta DiMage at 1/30 sec., f/10, iso 100, 15.1mm. • / October 2009 / The main entrance to Kendal parish church in Cumbria England.. / Shot with a Nikon D70s and 18-70mm lens / 3 shot HDR tonemapped image using Photomatix and photoshop / This impressive building, being one of the widest Parish Churches in the Country and situated in the Valley of the River Kent in the ancient town of Kirkbie Kendale, dates from the early thirteenth century, but there is evidence that it occupies the site of a much earlier Church. At the time of the Doomsday Book, an established Church is recorded in Kendal and the shaft of an Anglican Cross dated at approximately AD 850 and housed in the Parr Chapel suggest a very early beginning of Christian worship in this area. In 1087, Ivo de Tailebois, the first Baron of Kendal, gave to St Mary’s Abbey in York “The Church of Kircabi in Kendale with its land”. The early rectors were provided by St Mary’s, and Abbot Hall was built to accommodate the Abbot, when he came to Kendal. The present building originally consisted of a nave, chancel, two aisles and the tower; the six nave pillars, lower part of the tower, pillars and the West Wall surviving to the present day. It is thought that some of the sandstone from the Saxon Church is incorporated in the present building. This stone was probably brought from Watercrook when the Saxons destroyed the Roman Fort there.

  • Some churches simply have to greatest doors! I found this one with a vivid red door in Cape May, New-Jersey, USA. Finished in 6th position of Top Ten in the WARM: Reds-Oranges-Yellows challenge of the Simple by Design Group on March 8, 2009 . That one was easy, as there were only 9 entries! ;-) /

  • The founding of St Mary’’s is given as 800 AD, it is probable that the church was begun as early as the late 6th century. Deerhurst occupied a position of importance in the territory of the Saxon Hwicce, a subkingdom of Mercia, and the church was the most important in the region. In the year 804 Aethelric, son of King Edmund of the Hwicce, granted land at Deerhurst to the priory, he and his father were probably buried at Deerhurst. In 1016 Edmund Ironside and Canute chose Deerhurst to sign a treaty dividing England between them. In the 11th century Deerhurst was the home of Earl Odda, one of the most powerful of Edward the Confessor’s nobles. Odda was responsible for the chapel which bears his name, which was completed shortly before his death in 1056. After Odda’s death the priory lands were given to the monastery of St Denis, in France, and the chapel passed into the hands of Westminster Abbey. The monastery was later the property of Tewkesbury Abbey, but at the Dissolution of the Monasteries the priory was disbanded and the church became the parish church.
