During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began. Pershing Park, Washington D.C. An Iraqi Army soldier’s assault rifle hangs from one of the many concrete barriers used as barricades and blast walls. Arabic graffiti written in charcoal from a warming fire, warns approaching vehicles to stay back or they will be fired upon. Mosul, Iraq Circa 2006
A fire team from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, sit in an over watch position atop a house in the outskirts of Mosul, Iraq in 2006. The threat of snipers forced these soldiers to sit on chairs to reduce their silhouettes and their possibility of being targeted, while covering other soldiers moving from building to building on the ground looking for terrorists and possible caches of weapons. Mosul, Iraq Circa 2006
A U.S. soldier shows off a scar from the surgery required to remove multiple pieces of ammunition shrapnel sustained when his squad came under direct enemy fire while on patrol in Mosul, Iraq. The aurora borealis, or what is commonly referred to as the northern lights, dances over the peak of Twelvemile Summit in interior Alaska. The sun rises just slightly below the horizon at around 2:30 am in August. Some native Alaskans believe that the lights are the souls of their ancestors coming to Earth and by waving or whistling to them they come closer to the ground. 30 sec. exposure at f22 Northern Alaska Circa 2007
A nurse at the brand new Bassett Army Community Hospital, makes final measurements of a newborn under the lights of the warming machine in one of the labor and delivery rooms. There has been a post deployment baby boom on the base of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, after the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team returned from a 16 month deployment last year. Over 120 babies were born in the month of September alone. Fairbanks, Alaska September 2007
A little girl from Mt. Elgon, Uganda tells me with a smile in her native Lugandan language, not to take her picture. This village borders the initial hot zone, near Kitum Cave, where the Ebola virus broke out back in the late 60’s and continued to baffle scientists up until the last century. Uganda, East Africa July 1998
A long exposure shot of a few guys camping along side the Yukon River just outside of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory of Canada. Back lit from the full moon hiding just behind a tree, mid-lighting by the campfire and the tent is lit with a small LED camping headlamp. This actually on a self-timer and that is myself on the far right. 20 sec. exposure at f11 Whitehorse, YT, Canada October 2007
An old wooden fishing boat sits on the shore of Burwash lake in western Yukon Territory in complete dereliction. Years of use and the brutal weather has began to chip away at the many layers of paint. Burwash, YT, Canada October 2007
Vast rows of deciduous trees can be seen in perfect columns, displaying their autumn attire, at this tree farm in eastern Oregon. Tree farmers sow rows of trees in varying stages so they can be harvested at different times and therefore produce a constant yield to maintain a consistent gross. Eastern Oregon October 2007
An old road sign riddled with bullet holes, apparently used for target practice, leans slightly off the highway near Balancing Rock in southern Idaho. This tourist stop has been heavily vandalized because of its secluded location and lack of state funding. Southern Idaho October 2007
Two soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team stand guard in the rear hatches of their stryker vehicle while on patrol north of Mosul, Iraq. Many unfamiliar with the geography of Iraq believe it is entirely arid, but as this picture shows, northern Iraq is quite hilly and in the spring, the fields are a vibrant green because of all the precipitation coming off the northern range. Duhuk, Iraq Circa 2006
The driver of a Stryker armored vehicle, from the 172nd SBCT, Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, takes a moment to rest in the shade of a eucalyptus tree, out of his extremely warm driver’s hatch. Secure Iraqi Army outposts like this one in the outskirts of Mosul, Iraq, give soldiers a chance to relax while patrolling all over the city. Mosul, Iraq Circa 2005
A plot to destroy the world begins with a simple threat. Terror has many faces…this is but one.
An abandoned homestead cabin stands in dereliction adjacent a field as a cold fog rolls into the central mountains of Colorado. Homesteads were as large as 160 acres back in the 1800s and could be purchased through the government for as little as $16 dollars. The purchaser only had to show improvement to their property by growing food, raising livestock and fencing a section of it within five years of receiving the deed. Blackhawk, Colorado September 2008

How does one communicate love from a distant land, not knowing for certain, whether they’ll return…? Found envelope, old anatomy chart, defibrillator pads, string and undisclosed form of communication inside envelope. Part of the mixed media collection. Circa 2006
“And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world – our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down – we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security – we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright – tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.” Photoshop combo of two images. Obama image used from www.politicogod.com/.../barack_obama_finger.jpg and personal image. Golden, Colorado. Circa 2008 /
On a day that’s hard to appreciate, or even swallow down, the definition of a Veteran seems unavoidably linked with an older generation. I don’t feel like a Vet. My grandfather is a Veteran, myself on the other hand, I feel as though I fall into an undefinable category. Generation X who has become “Generation Kill,” and subsequently slips right back into society, undetectable. The pain, fear and horror of what we’ve gone through is repressed, so that we can move fluidly back into this madness we call America, and continue our lives. The transition is impossible and just like generations before us, we will never fit it. Self portrait. 1/30 sec. @ f2.8 with Nikon N90s on self-timed. Mosul, Iraq Circa 2006
