HEY YOU GUYS! GUESS WHAT!? / / / CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE! / That’s what! / / The holiday’s not quite here yet, but it is coming up fast and it’s going to be furiously descriptive! Lots of things are going to happen…to you. We want you to tell us about them. Everything. Is this not a descriptive writing group? So pick up your groaning fingers and tap away at that keyboard, because the challenge is going to be running from NOW (yes! right now!) until December 25th. / Basically, we want to know about any of your past or future Christmases or even the one coming up and what you plan to do with it (granted you celebrate it, if you don’t, just write about the holiday season surrounding it and/or your observations). / / Here are some things you might want to include in your writing: / / the smells and food coming from the kitchen, the decorations inside and around the house/neighborhood, the sounds of dishes being clattered, the tv or radio burbling in the background, laughter from friends in another room, a raucous conversation in another. Whether you are at someone else’s house or your own, whether you have friends or extended family over or if you decided to keep it small and simple with just yourself/family. Did/will you travel? Perhaps talk about the temperature outside, if there is snow or if it’s warm and sunny. Are there carolers? Describe the lights everywhere, or the pine trees in some people’s front windows. How are you feeling through all of this, the days leading up to it, and even the days after? What exactly is going through your busy head with all of this jovial chaos going on around you? What gifts have you received in the past, or have you given others, or do you hope to receive this year? / / This is just a quick list, but the possibilities are endless, and the only rules are these: / 1. 500 words or more / 2. go go go! / / As for posting, it would help all of the hosts out TREMENDOUSLY if you could both TAG your work as gschristmas and include at least a link to it in this handy little forum. You don’t have to copy and paste the writing, just make sure there is some direction as to where we can find it for voting purposes. Winners will be selected through a public voting process and yes, even the hosts may enter. We will provide more information regarding the voting/winning at a later date. / / I’ll be working on a prize in the next few days as well. Start those holiday brains and good luck!

Hello Gang, This is Mark your moderator of the Graphic Arts group. This week sees us all probably realising how close christmas actually is and going through like crazy to find the ideal present, so this week Id like to present. The top 5 GA Pool Approved Christmas bubbles! (catches breath): / 1) Christmas Cubes by yanmos – Watch the spaces in between the cubes, and see the hidden dots! .. i love how a grid causes this weird effect .. and these colours are so cute! 2) Beks Deer by Grant Bissett Deers are Christmas right ?.. kinda ? sorta .. Meh, Deers are so hot right now.. 3) Abstract Christmas Ornaments by tdoes the colours are very festive, and the repeating pattern is very GA approved. 4) pollen by yuki nakano This one also makes me feel Christmasy , not in a traditional sense, but the colours and the vibrancy just make me feel happy and it kinda looks like my house Christmas morning when everyone’s going nuts opening presents. 5) or check out the traditional styled work from William Martin GA | Interview This weeks GA interview is young upcoming designer from Melbourne – Ben Vernel Tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background.? / I’m a young Melbourne lad who spends far too much time on the computer. I’ve been interested in design and art from a young age; my father has been an oil painter, freelance inllustrator, line artist for the Yellow Pages and a Photoshop teacher, so art has clearly been present and prominent in my life as a result of him. I have done a Certificate III in Interactive Multimedia, and have been creating works since mid-high school. I dabbled in photography but focused on design and fashion over the past year or so. I love vector art and I also love a complex hand drawn style I am hoping to develop. What is the inspiration behind your works? / It’s hard to pin down, but I’d say the content is nostalgic, reaching back into childhood memories for imagery like cassette tapes, paper aeroplanes and of course, retro video gaming. The style is decidedly contemporary, with a lot of vector art and interesting typography. What is your personal favourite of all your works on redbubble today and why, and if you will explain a little on how it was created? / I would have to say my t-shirt design Memories would be my favourite. I included the objects (joystick, viewfinder, rubik’s cube, and SNES gamepad) because I am a bit of a nerd and they’re a bit retro so they also remind me of when I was younger. The colours all work well together, especially on a green background, and I am pleased with the thick black outlines and composition of the objects. Which other redbubble artist do you admire? / I really love Lars’ work. She introduced me to redbubble, and still amazes me with the simple beauty of her hand drawn designs. I am also blown away by Laura and kookylane’s work. If a famous person bought your art from redbubble who would you like it to be and where would you like them to display it? / Um wow, maybe the singer from Klaxons could wear one of my t-shirts at a photoshoot! Tell us what are you doing in your free time? / Currently I’m on holidays from university so I’m kicking back and playing a lot of NES and Grand Theft Auto on PC, watching a heap of movies (last movie watched was The Darjeeling Limited. I’d give it 9/10), and a bit of tv (new series’ of Scrubs and The Mighty Boosh). Additional Info: I’ve been approached by a boutique store asking about a lookbook and pricelist recently and had no idea how to respond. I’m hoping to get these together, and possibly a portfolio as well so any tips from fellow designers would be welcome! Visit the redbubble portfolio of Ben Vernel | End Mail
