  • Although the temperature was a balmy 72 degrees a sandstorm overtook now Historic U.S. Highway 80, California during sunset. The wind was howling along the once called ‘Broadway of America’. My camera’s sensors have never looked as bad as after this shot. High-gloss Mounted Print /

  • Sheltie is short for Shetland Sheepdog, a herding breed that originates from the Shetland Islands off the northern tip of Scotland. / “What a cute miniature Collie!” “Look at the little Lassie!” “Is that a toy Collie?” / Every owner of a Shetland Sheepdog has heard and responded to countless comments such as these, but although Shelties bear a striking resemblance to Collies, they are a totally separate breed with differences in structure and temperament. And they are not a toy. The standard for Shelties states that they should measure between 13” and 16” at the shoulder. Most fall into the upper half of this range. The old guy in this photograph is our own Sheltie. His name in Strolchi, a German name which means “Little Tramp”. He was the smallest among his siblings and is one of the more rare Shelties which measure only 13” at the shoulder. We got him almost 14 years ago when he was 10 weeks old. Strolchi was not bred in a puppy mill but by an experienced, knowledgeable, European Shetland Sheepdog breeder, so his loyal, alert, enthusiastic, and charming personality is undisturbed. His luxurious coat as well as his sweet expression are only a few of his hallmarks, but we never bugged him with coaxing his ears into the correct carriage. He, as all Shelties, is happiest when the whole family is together in one room, enjoying each other’s company. In the Sheltie’s mind, the family is its flock, and a family spread throughout the house can lead to a very restless, pacing Sheltie. He lives to please and spreads his love, and when he turns on the sheltie cuteness it is impossible to resist him. / We love him with all our heart. • This attractive sailing-vessel-like structure is a relic from Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada. The city transformed an old cargo pier into a showcase intended to rival the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. / Today it is home to a cruise ship terminal, a convention center and a hotel. • Steer Wrestling at the Rodeo in Poway, Southern California / / Kicking up dust: The rodeo is a completely unique experience, and it’s an intriguing view into a completely different culture. Strict rules exist for the safety of horses, calves, bulls and steers. They are the heart and soul of the rodeo, and the cowboys are proud of their animals. One part of the Rodeo is the Steer Wrestling also known as Bulldogging. / It requires not just strength but also finesse and skill. Speed, timing and leverage are essential. A winning time is usually between 3 to 4 seconds, but these big boys keep getting faster and faster – and although there may be a few broken bones at the end of it, who cares? Yee-Haw! / / / / Laminated Print /

  • Dust swirls around the horses and mules as “cowboys” move them from the winter pasture near Bishop to the summer pack station at June Lake in California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada. For a week the horse drive follows trails created by Indians and early ranchers into some of the most beautiful country in the Western United States. / / Mounted Print /

  • Utah has some of the best snow on earth for skiing. That’s why Salt Lake City was selected by the IOC to host the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Seven canyons snake up into the mountains from the city’s edges, which means 7 ski resorts are within a snowball’s toss: Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, Park City, Deer Valley, and Wolf Mountain. Alta definitely is The Best ski area and deserves the tremendous respect that it has garnered over the years. There’s a definite magic about Alta. It has everything a skier could want. Brighton is a hidden gem. It has a good mix of terrain with some nice black diamond runs, and also welcomes snowboarders. Solitude offers many great trails, a fair amount of black diamond territory, and a long intermediate run which has some nice steep areas. Skiing it on a weekday means you’ll never have a lift line wait. Snowbird has lots of interesting terrain, especially for the more advanced skier. Park City is huge. It’s impossible to ski all of its excellent mix of terrain in one day. / / Deer Valley is famous for its poshness and attracts people with far more money than skiing ability. However, when you’re looking for interesting runs you possibly get bored quickly. Wolf Mountain is a smaller resort with some very good runs and an interesting mix of terrain. Most of the runs are pretty challenging. Even easy and intermediate runs seem to be harder than similarly ranked slopes at neighboring resorts. Utah has everything one could want in a ski vacation – big mountains, gorgeous scenery and abundant dry powdery snow. Come along for a ride. / / Wasatch Mountain Range, UT / /

  • Here are Pixie, the black Cane Corso, and Tucker, the Beagle. The size difference may prevented other dogs from becoming friends; however, these two are playful pals. The dogs chase each other around, or Pixie (the Cane Corso) lies on the ground and lets Tucker (the Beagle) pretend to be dominant as the little dog jumps on her and chews her ears. They eat together and, when they sleep, Tucker lies against the big black dog to stay warm. The two dogs apparently draw comfort from each other. The bond that dogs can establish with other dogs and species is often dramatic and poignant. This is consistent with the idea that, although dogs are happiest when they are in a social situation, the species that they are interacting with is less important than the quality of the interactions. Thank you for being a Friend card / Framed Print /

  • In terms of breathtaking, there’s Canada – and there’s Winter in Canada. / No words can adequately describe the exhilaration of being in this winter wonderland when Canada’s famously cold winter climate transforms and embraces mother nature. • Boxers are an incredibly graceful and very independent breed, very willing to work, but unwilling to be ordered around. Friedrun Stockmann, a German breeder whose work with boxers helped to make the breed what it is today, described the Boxer as “a gentleman amongst dogs with short coats. He not only wants the best food, he wants to be handled in a civilized manner, too.” The Boxer is not, and was never meant to be, an “attack dog”. However, lack of aggression does not equal lack of protection. Boxers are natural guard dogs, and the first breed ever to be used as Service Dogs in the US. They partner people who are blind, deaf, lame, in wheelchairs, etc. Not one of them has ever been successfully mugged. Not one of them has had their home successfully broken into when their Boxer Service Dog has been present. These dogs know when things aren’t right and they will act accordingly. A typical Boxer is a gentle creature without aggressive tendencies and a one-dog home-entertainment center. He is a quick learner, though he is just as quick to unlearn any task for which he does not see a reason. He is easy-care, intelligent, athletic, and faithful; a trustworthy pet for an active family … As Matthew Cowley said in his article ‘Canine Clowns’: A boxer is “a laugh a minute, lives life to the fullest, a maximum velocity version of canine slapstick.” What more could an dog lover ask for? • Utah has been blessed with a diversity of unusual rock formations and canyons unequalled anywhere in the world. One of them, a gorgeous canyon named Nine Mile Canyon, located 20 miles southeast of Price, UT is nicknamed “the world’s longest art gallery,” famous for its thousands of ancient images or petroglyphs that go back in time to the mysterious disappearance of a Native American culture. Nine Mile Canyon is approximately five times longer than its name indicates and full of cliffs, unique tilted rocks and vegetation, old homesteads, working ranches, prehistoric Fremont Indian ruins, petroglyphs, pictographs, ancient Indian writings, and a lot of beautiful scenery, in addition to the most spectacular largest concentration of ancient Indian rock art in North America. It is a destination for archeologists from all over the world and for tourists alike. All you need is a love for beautiful scenery and invigorating outdoor activity to enjoy this remote, hostile, unblemished and rough southern Utah wilderness. At the same time Nine Mile Canyon is an outdoor museum that is being destroyed. You can still find standing rock art towers from thousands of years ago that withstood the test of time, but really aren’t going to withstand the pressures of natural gas development. Jim Lindsay, the guide at Utah’s Natural History Museum points out that “we only have maybe 15, 20 years before they could be so damaged that it would be difficult to see any of them. The public debate over the extraction of natural gas in the middle of a historic landmark is expected to continue for years to come.” Nine Mile Canyon / / / Example: Mounted Print /

  • The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, / But I have promises to keep, / And miles to go before I sleep, / And miles to go before I sleep. / Robert Frost – 1923 – “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” / This poem was also used in the film “Telefon” (1977) as a code phrase to activate sleeper agents / These last lines of Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” describe my own feelings when I see the deep Canadian forests in British Columbia. I think of times when I was a child and believed that magic could be found behind every trunk, in every shadow, under every bit of moss; of times in the woods, when I would just stand there in awe, listening to the stillness. Each moment was so precious … Then I ‘hear the clock ticking’ and I move back into the noise … / “I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.” / / / / Des Waldes Dunkel zieht mich an, / doch muss zu meinem Wort ich stehn … / und Meilen gehen, / bevor ich schlafen kann. / / Example: Mounted Print /

  • Garden of the Gods in Colorado is a 1300-acre rock garden composed of spectacular red sandstone formations, sculpted by rain and wind over millions of years, whose appearance changes with and is enhanced by the sun’s movement throughout the day. Coming here puts you in your place. You start to believe in Santa Claus, Leprechauns and Unicorns because it is almost impossible to see all these contorted, twisting, brightly colored rocks and not think of some mystical spirit in the air. What a spectacular natural display; like some beautiful and mythological setting full of grandeur and color! If you like nature – and even if you don’t – this gorgeously unexpected mix of green shrubbery and almost desert will knock your socks off with red monolithic rocks that shoot up toward the sky and winding paths amongst their underbrush. If you have the time, come during different times of the day to observe the effect of the sunlight on the rocks. Garden of the Gods has it all from beautiful, majestic scenery to fantastic views of Colorado Springs. At only 1.5 hours from Denver, CO there’s no reason not to drive down to this awe-inspiring natural wonder to enjoy its picturesque sunrises and sunsets or a night under the stars. Garden of the Gods is a juxtaposition of the balance of nature and man throughout the year. • Established in 1909, Point Cabrillo Light is a lighthouse in northern California, United States, between Point Arena and Cape Mendocino, about 1.5 miles from Fort Bragg, CA. In 1991 the light station was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2002, California State Parks purchased the light station. Northern California has a serious fog problem, so fog horns sound regularly up and down the coast, and lighthouses still operate (that light was on!). Typically the combination lighthouse and fog signal building, which resembles a small church, is fogged in, thick dense fog, and cold wind chills the bones. Point Cabrillo Lighthouse /

  • Point Reyes Light is a lighthouse located on the Point Reyes Peninsula across the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. California, United States. Its first-order Fresnel lens was first lit on December 1, 1870. According to the USCG (United States Coast Guard) Point Reyes is, by official records, the windiest and foggiest on the Pacific Coast. The station is frequently blanketed by week-long periods of fog and few years pass that do not see violent gales of 75 to 100 mph (121 – 161 km/h) strike the area. / During certain times of the year it can get so foggy and windy at the light station, that one cannot even view the lighthouse from the top of the approximately 300 steps necessary to walk down to reach it. Point Reyes Lighthouse serves a great purpose in such a foggy area, as there is no beach to wash up on; it is on a rocky cliff. Day or night, the light may be the only thing visible to ships. • August 15, 2009: Through the cobbled streets along preserved, restored or reconstructed historic buildings in the heart of Old Sacramento I was heading out north-west towards Eureka and Crescent City, CA. Located on the banks of the Sacramento River, Old Town Sacramento, which is known for its rich historical contributions to California, began as a trading post, and it experienced explosive growth. Today with dozens of historic Gold Rush-era buildings Old Town Sacramento has been named a National Landmark, and a portion of it is designated as a State Historic Park. Over 5 million people a year are drawn here for its museums, shops and restaurants. Before I left town that morning I photographed this old Steamer-Building right at the Sacramento riverfront docks and the boardwalk at the Western end of K street accross the railroad tracks to take a bit of the old wild west feeling home with me. Homage to Old Town Sacramento, CA / Framed Print /

  • Boxers are a distinguishable, medium-built and strong breed of dogs, that got its name from its habit of standing on the hind legs to begin a fight and boxing with the front paws. The Boxer is a working dog. They’ve been trained to be Hunting dogs, Police dogs, Seeing-eye dogs for the blind, Guard dogs, Circus dogs, Courier dogs on the battlefields during World War I and World War II, and Fighting dogs in the once popular sport of dog fighting. Even the American Kennel Club (AKC) categorizes Boxer Dogs as the largest breed registered in the “working dog” category. Other than this heavy-duty capabilities, the Boxer dog is a loving companion and a good friend with a great personality, Boxers are very handsome dogs. Their expressive faces – the wrinkled forehead and dark, touching eyes – are a charming quality that sets the Boxer dogs apart from other breeds. If you ask a boxer dog owner about the resemblance of his dog to himself, he’d probably tell you that his dog can almost mirror his mood! You can never get enough of Boxer dogs’ good traits! • A Jack Russel is a happy, bold, energetic, extremely loyal, intelligent and assertive dog. / He can be equally contented bolting a fox or chasing a toy in your living room, or equally adept at killing a sock in the living room or a rat in your barn. The Jack Russel’s funny antics will continually amuse you, their intelligence seems to know no bounds and their assertive nature and boundless energy can at times be overwhelming. The unique personality of this feisty little terrier dogs is capturing the hearts of many, but they are not a dog for everyone. E.g. in most cases Jack Russels will not put up with even unintended abusive nature from a child. The Jack Russell does require special handling, and there is a lot of special information available about this dogs to determine if the Jack Russell Terrier is the right dog for you. Mounted Print /

  • Pork Chop, the English Bulldog puppy (50 pounds and still growing!!!) A Bulldog, also known as British Bulldog or English Bulldog, is a breed of dog which traces its ancestry to England. It should not be confused with other varieties such as the American Bulldog or the French Bulldog, which have a similar appearance. Despite the Bulldogs’ usual “grumpy” facial expression, they are one of the kindest and gentlest of all dog breeds. English bulldog pups are great dogs that are very special from the outside AND from the inside. Having this dog around means a lot of joy and fun. However, if you like to go for long walks, jogging or cycling with your dog, a bulldog is probably not the right breed for you. And if you want an obedient dog who will jump at your every command, don’t get a bulldog ! Poster /

  • A Doxie and a Golden – Two of a kind! Golden Retrievers are without any doubt smart and loyal dogs. But the Dachshund is a good dog too, smart and fast, and a comedy show on its own. The ‘Wiener’ is an early warning system. The Golden only barks when necessary and is good for ‘effect’ when you consider intruders…big bark and big presence. It takes a special person to own a doxie. This Barking Sausage is very stubborn and an independent thinker, and a little difficult to housebreak. Goldens are good at paying attention and learn quickly. ‘Hot dogs’ do not care that they are small. Waldi (that’s the German nickname for dachshund) acts like a big dog in a small body, keeps up with the big dogs and will usually be the “boss”. Golden Retrievers want nothing more than our love. They are all about pleasing their family and know our every mood. Dackel, (that’s how the Dachshund is usually called in Germany) are playful, curious, and bold, but they prefer older, considerate children who respect their dog’s space and privacy. Golden’s are the best dog for kids of all ages. gentle, reliable and trustworthy, yet protective. Doxies ‘think’ that they can rule the world and have a great heart. Golden’s have a great heart and ‘know’ that they can rule the world. The Dachshund and the Golden Retriever are both very good dogs, and to own both of them is a lot of fun. Just make sure you have a good vacuum cleaner! Laminated Print /

  • Minnie – the Australian Mini Foxie / She’s a princess and she steals hearts all the time. Mini Foxies, as they are often known, have been bred in Australia (under several different names) since the 1800’s. These tenacious little terriers are the descendants of fox terrier types bred in England and brought to Australia by early settlers. / Breeders were seeking a light, fast dog that would retain the characteristics of the Fox Terrier, while hunting smaller pests such as rabbits and rodents. The Miniature Foxie has ‘bred true’ for generations. Their look is unique and its noble head is distinctive. Laminated Print /

  • One of the most popular breeds in the USA, is the Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short). They are loyal, loving, affectionate and patient, making great family dogs. Hershey, the chocolate lab, is huge, but he has the sweetest friendliest personality one can think of. He loves everyone, and everyone loves him. Laminated Print /

  • The Australian Shepherd is a breed of herding dog that was developed on ranches in the Western United States. Despite its name, the breed, commonly known as an Aussie, did not originate in Australia. They acquired their name because of association with Basque sheepherders who came to the United States from Australia. / He needs a lot of activity and a sense of purpose to be truly content. • It was an overcast day in the area of Point Cabrillo, California. The beach was empty except for a charm of yellow finches. The cute little birds, known for their cheerful songs, were gathering on a wrought iron fence. They seemed to be waiting for the sun to come out since the thick dense fog had not quite lifted yet. A small yellow finch (aka gold finch and American finch) adds bright sunny color and charm to every backyard in which it is found especially on a gray day like this. To have a flock of these brightly colored birds flitting about your yard is practically magical! I found it very peaceful, enchanting and charming … Laminated Print /
