This was, and still is, a song I wrote for a church worship session, but the words sum up, pretty much, an important part of my Christian faith and I offer them as such.

Every now and then, I’ll come across an artwork on RedBubble that ruffles quite a few feathers because it has religious/ anti-American/ general political undertones. And, unsurprisingly, I’ll scroll down to see about a billion comments, usually by the same 5 people, who all keep arguing with each other, with nothing to show for it in the end. Because somewhere in between all that arguing, they seem to get less concerned with what they were arguing about, and more occupied with trying to get people to believe they’re 100 percent right about their point in the discussion. It’s amusing (and a little sad) to watch, but it became a little disturbing when I found out some of these people were Christians. While I don’t disagree that, throughout many parts of the world, there’s an all out assault on the message of Jesus Christ, I think a lot of believers get too caught up, and defend Jesus with such ferocity that they forget who He is. You don’t really need to defend God, guys – it’s the other way around! This poem/ writing was birthed out of that thought, and also the disturbing fact that so many people intertwine their faith and politics so tightly, that they try to destroy any notion that they might be wrong about anything. It’s enough to make anyone miss Jesus, and the time when people really understood his words (IF there was ever such a time, that is – even when he was on earth, nobody seemed to really understand the meaning behind his message)

Written counterpart to Paul Tait’s image, Elder Hall Even if God won’t ever allow to give my heart to any man other than Jesus… I consider it one of His greatest mercies that there will always be music, and there will always be dance. And when the beat is right, all prejudices, hatred, and all around negativity just seem to melt away once you get on the floor. Let’s keep dancing!

Hell is the Road to Heaven (?)

If you want to know who it is that really loves God, look towards the people who were former alcoholics, former drug addicts, those who have had to deal with some kind of great loss or sin… the people who have led extremely tragic and/ or immoral lives are the ones who seem to be the most devoted to God once He finally speaks to them. / In short, I’m pretty much taking on the voice of the older brother in Jesus’ parable about the Prodigal Son :P All of which leads me to ask something – what of the people who weren’t waist-deep in sin? What about the people who were fairly good, even before they knew there was a higher power to answer to? Is it possible for us to love God with the same kind of passion that others have? Or do our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls have to be shattered first, before that love becomes the uncontrollable fire that we wish it could be?

The inspiration behind this song came from four passages in the Bible: Leviticus 18:22 / John 3:16 / 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 / 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 This song was also meant to be sung to the tune of Elisa’s “Una Poesia Anche Per Te” Probably one of the most personal things I’ve ever written… I’m sure most everyone will realize exactly what I’m talking about in this song without me having to spell it out… getting it out of my system this way is cathartic in a way I can’t even begin to describe. If you want to ask me anything about this song, feel free – I still feel the need to talk about it with anyone who has any sort of idea what I’ve dealt with these past 21 years…

Two things inspired Man to Messiah. The first is an amazing book by Donald Miller that I honestly believe everyone should read, entitled Searching for God Knows What. The second is a beautiful song written by Elisa Toffoli: Qualcosa Che Non C’e The refrain of her song especially stood out to me: / Ho aspettato a lungo qualcosa che non c’è / Invece di guardare il sole sorgere. In English, it means: I’ve waited so long for something that doesn’t exist/ Instead of watching the sunrise I’d explain how that fits in so well with one of the messages in Donald’s book (namely, the Lifeboat Theory), but my recommendation is that you read it and see for yourself

The grief never ends…. / Psalm 42 / 1 As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I went with the throng, F78 and led them in procession to the house of God, with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help 6 and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your cataracts; all your waves and your billows have gone over me. 8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I walk about mournfully because the enemy oppresses me?” 10 As with a deadly wound in my body, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me continually, “Where is your God?” 11 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.
